Looking out over Lake Superior any time of year, gives you a forewarning of weather on its way, like this photo from Greta Jones. It was taken Friday, before the Arctic blast hit the Keweenaw over the weekend. I guess those gray clouds were the forewarning of what was coming behind them in the form of snow, cold and a little wind thrown in there too. Hope everyone stayed warm and safe!

Deb, Lower Michigan is slightly warmer. We had -8 when I left for work this morning. Kids got school cancelled for the cold (A Phenomena that never happened before global warming)

Hey I'm 180+ miles south of the Copper Country and it's 10 degrees colder here than there.

Realy cool picture, but who realy took it? On the Big Picture it says Greta Jones and before you click it says RCW.Spoke to brother in Dollar Bay and he said school will be out today the way it looked at halftime in the Super Bowl.Is it so?

Peshtigopete - That is the delight of living on the shores of the greatest Great Lake: Lake Superior is the most wonderful heat sink, and she moderates our temperatures in both winter and summer - warmer in winter (although "warm" is relative this morning!) and cooler in summer.
By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 10:17 am:
Your right David, it says RCW when you click it, but it was I, Greta Jones who took it. (??)

Good morning from Mishawaka, IN. It's a cold, snowy morning. Schools are all closed due to the cold. So I get to enjoy an extra day at home.
Greta, the picture is great. I bet it was really cold getting that shot. Thanks for braving the weather.

It's a BALMY 7°(wind chill -12°) here in Corunna and the kids are home from school as it appears most others are too. The last time I remember cold of this nature my now 13 year old was 4 months old! Keep warm everyone!
By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 12:33 pm:
Thanks Marsha and Charlotte. I shot this one from my living room which faces west over the big lake. I didn't have to get cold for this one, but it was plenty cold outside when it hit; sub-zero temps and double-digit wind chill factors. Record low yesterday in Marquette. Stay warm and cozy everyone. :)

The story says that some of the games will be broadcast over the Internet, at http://www.hockeyweekly.com/index_hs.asp#1, but it is not clear whether or not that will be free.

Hey whats going on here!!!!! I sure is the one who snapped that classic photo. Fact is I still have it in my files.
What folks were referring to up above here, was the mouse over on the Pasty Cam page (the one with the whole weeks pictures). For Greta's photo it said, "Photo by R.C. Wetton" (like the day before) instead of "Storm brewing". It's since been fixed! Sorry for the confusion!

Deb S., it was -26 in my little corner of "tropical MinneSNOWta this morning. I had to chuckle when I read your post from yesterday about ending every sentence with "hey" ! Even after being in MN for almost 30 years, I still say that. Thanks for the Yooper memories !!

Most of the schools here in the UP were closed today. Too cold for the kiddes, except in the Copper Country where the kids are tough. We made it to school and had a normal day (well, sorta normal).
By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 03:23 pm:
I've been out of the UP for almost 31 years and I still say eh at the end of my sentences. People catch me at it all the time. I think it's an excellent verbal tattoo of my home.
By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 03:57 pm:
Sorry RCW, I personally snapped this on Friday morning as I watched it come in. The poplar trees are on my property, so either you were on my property at that exact same time, or you'd better look twice at your files. Go to my gallery, and you'll see those poplars in many of my photos. :)
By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 04:07 pm:
PS: Does your photo have the corn cob halfway covered with snow sticking up in the forground too??
By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 05:10 pm:
Someone mentioned a record low in Marquette yesterday. I tho't it was a record low *high*.
By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 07:21 pm:
No problem Laure, Any time you want to reminisce......
By RCW (Rcw) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 07:28 pm:
Greta if you check it was the Sunday shoebox picture that Dave was refering to. OK
By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 09:22 pm:
RCW, boy things were a little screwed up today; I see it's been fixed. Love your shoebox photo by the way. OK. By the way Eugenia, you're right-it was a record low-high. (We had -14 at the lake in the am. Wind chill must've been around -39.)
By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, February 5, 2007 - 09:52 pm:
Yes it has been fixed. When I ran my mouse over the second picture before you click on the big picture it had RCW on it,now it reads storm brewing. It looked as if RCW had two day's in a row untill you clicked on the Big Picture.I could tell it was Greta then.No one else would have noticed if it wasn't for me,my training in security of being very observent just came about to me.I should have just let it slide. However it is a awesome photo Greta!Everything is fine now, yes?
By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 - 01:43 am:
Shellyt36: I do remember then! It was late January 1994, I think about the 21st we had -22f one night! So cold our WELL froze several feet down in the pipes! (we have a Corunna near here just across the St. Clair River in Ontario!)
By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 - 01:24 pm:
Yes, David, everything's fine. I had a good chucle over it.
