This is the former home of the Daily Mining Gazette in downtown Houghton, in a shot taken eight years ago. The building has become an apartment building, while the Gazette has moved to the main drag on the west end of town.

First PostMorning!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 07:10 am:

Good Morning!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 07:17 am:

Cool! Are they pretty large apartments or just mediocre taking up rooms as needed?

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 08:21 am:

Top o' the morning! I have a new granddaughter, Grace Elaine, born last night weighing 7lbs., 14 oz. Mom is doing well after being on complete bedrest and some problems during delivery. But that's all over now! Big sis, Madilyn, can't wait to get to kindergarden and tell her class.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 08:33 am:

Congrats on the new bundle of joy. What a beautiful name. I wonder if Big Sis will want to give her back in a couple of weeks after the novelty wears off. Best wishes and blessings to Mom!

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 08:33 am:

Congrats Marsha!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 08:48 am:

Congratulations Marsha!! Glad everything turned out okay for all! Love both of your granddaughters names.

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 09:07 am:

How is the project to convert the Hotel Scott to apartments coming along?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 09:18 am:

Congratulations, Marsha! I do know how glad your daughter is to be off of bed rest, as I was on complete bed rest for many weeks when I was pregnant with my youngest son. I was allowed one short shower a day, but I was not allowed to even go downstairs or to sit at a desk upstairs, or anything, much less walk the short distance to the mailbox. And I didn't even have a laptop computer then, but I don't think I would have been allowed to sit up to use that, either. The only place I was allowed to go was to medical appts. The birth of her baby is like getting out of jail, in a way, as she has a lot more freedom just to be herself.

Anyway, I'm very happy to hear that all is now well with Mom and baby! That is a great weight for your grand baby! Congratulations again and take care.

Congratulations grandma Marsha! Aren't grandkids great. I feel they are rewards for surviving your own kids and their trials and tribulations Would lay down my life for any one of the kids or grandkids, hey?!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 10:08 am:

Congratulation Marsha
Finally snowed an amount to use the snow blower and it still don't work. Sun is out now and the sky is blue here in Berkley.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 10:14 am:

Speaking of being a grandma reminded me of a little story.

This little grandmother was surprised by her 7 year old grandson one morning. He had made her coffee. She drank what was the worst cup of coffee in her life.

When she got to the bottom, there were three of those little green army men, and she asked him why they were there.

Her grandson replied, "On television, they say, 'The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup!'"

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 10:16 am:

Congratulations Marsha, another Grandchild to spoil. Have fun getting all those cuddles.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 10:17 am:

Joanie, I thought stepping on the soldiers was bad. Don't think I want them in my coffee.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 10:20 am:

I worked for the Gazette back when they were still in that building. The production dept. or composing room as we called it was on the top floor and the pressroom was on the ground floor. I don't remember the exact yr. that we moved to the current location but I think it was around 1980; that was the former JCPenney building before they moved to the C.C. Mall.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 01:00 pm:

I remembered another story that happened when I was pregnant with Billy. My doctor had a great sense of humor and always put me at ease. One day I asked him, "Doctor, I'm two months pregnant, when will my baby move?" He replied, "With any luck, right after he finishes college!"

By Roger Somero (Rsomero) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 03:10 pm:

I worked at the Gazette when it was in that building also. Was one of the kids who wrapped and sent the paper all over the place. We hauled large mailbags of papers to the depot down the street. The picture sure brings back memories of 1965 to 1966.

By Alice Zimmerman (Alice) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 03:33 pm:

I also worked at the Gazette when it was in that building. I worked in the editorial dept. and made the pictures and typed local articles that were in the paper back in the early 60s. Lots of memories working with everyone. Today my brother works at the Gazette and my son works in the sports dept. at The Oregonian in Portland. Newspaper work seems to run in the family.
Good to see the old Gazette building agian.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 04:02 pm:

Joanie--your "soldiers in the cup" cracked me up! My mom used to drink Folger's coffee; it was the only brand she would drink. And, she tried forever to get me to drink coffee with her, beginning when I was about 3 years old. She got me a demitassee cup to drink out of. She even tried making it half milk & sugar, hoping to make a coffee drinker out of me. But, alas, I take after my Dad, with an exception. He always drank hot tea; I drank it hot for years. Now, I drink iced tea in a can, even it the dead of winter, unless I've been outside in the cold. Then, it's hot chocolate...

Anyway, thanks for a great laugh, Joanie!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 05:05 pm:

David, I sure love the way you express yourself!

Marianne, we have a lot in common, according to our profile pictures we both go to a groomer and not a hair salon!

By k j (Kathiscc) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 06:08 pm:

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 07:56 pm:

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Thursday, January 25, 2007 - 10:14 pm:

Daily Mining Gazette moved into the old JC Penny building in August 1980. The pressroom employees and Circulation dept was the first to move into the building at the time, then other depts moved one at a time.
