Good Morning From Florida

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 07:51 am:

Good Morning from cold mid-Michigan. Our low temp this morning was a whopping 2 degrees! My two little dogs don't like to stay outside very long in that.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 08:09 am:

I don't want to be outside very long in these temps either! Brrrr....my bed was so warm and cozy this morning with my kitties snuggled up with me. I want to go back there....

By Cotton (Cotton) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 08:28 am:

Supposed to be cool today in Sarasota. In the low 60's. The extended forecast says after today it'll go back into the 70's & low 80's. I'm a YOOPER, so what's 60 to me!! LOL Have a great day where ever you are.

By FJL (Langoman) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 08:32 am:

2 above outside~~~~~~~~stay warm........

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 08:42 am:

60° would be wonderful. In the UP that would mean we could lay out in the sun on the south side of the house when we were kids.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 09:47 am:

Beautiful picture. O degrees here. Brrr. My poor doggies had to hold their feet up after about 2 minutes outside. Come on mom, let us back in!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 09:58 am:

It's a chilly 7 above in Illinois. My Westie, Joey, is really gonna like living in the UP! I walked him for a freezing 20 minutes and the little bugger didn't want to come in the house. Must be his West Highland blood.

Good Day From Knoxville area where it is sunny 28*
It's great to have a remote starter on the SUV so it warms up and the window's will be clear while i finish my coffee. No need for a ice scraper- snow brush for me.. Ha ha ha hee hee

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 11:32 am:

Sunny and 84 here in the Detroit area, beautiful!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 11:41 am:

Funny how it's sweltering in Detroit but was only 7 in Flint this morning!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 11:45 am:

The good news: It only made it down to 30° this morning, so nothing too cold.

The bad news: It made it down to 30° and rained almost all night, so the freeway near me is that four-lane roller derby that was mentioned yesterday; everything out here is iced up!!

At least the Dr. and I have the day off so we didn't have to drive in it. I think we're just going to curl up with a good book and sip hot cholcolate all day (and post here, of course ;-)

By Kelly Kidd (Ellykay) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 11:48 am:

Good Morning from cold California. It's been well below freezing every night since last Friday. They say that 75% of the citrus crop is lost. And there was snow in the Napa valley last night.Feels like I'm back in Michigan.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 11:59 am:

Capt. Paul, we saw some of the Texas sliders on the news here this morning. I sure don't miss driving on the rink. We can still see the grass here, and it's all the way UP to 12 above.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 12:08 pm:

I saw that also, I was glad to have a dry road going into work this morning. What little we had cleared up.

By derek tuoriniemi (Derek) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 01:21 pm:

Its a whopping 17 above zero in grand forks today, i almost dont know what to do with myself, if it wasnt for an 8-5 day of class id probly have to bust out the shorts and enjoy the heat...

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 02:18 pm:

I can imagine the texas "sliders" made the national news; what a bunch of morons!!!! Common sense would tell you that the roads are icy, maybe I should slow down..... naaaa; they were still hauling on the freeways last night and this morning. That's the big reason why I wasn't going to work even if they hadn't canceled. I wasn't worried about me on the roads, it was everyone else........

Oh well, at least it gives me a chance to work on some of my Keweenaw geology stuff I'm doing these days ;-)

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 02:24 pm:

Just messin with ya Marsha!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 03:02 pm:

I was down in Virginia in the 70's, 4" of snow shut the state down. Of course here in MN if we got 4" of snow all at once this winter, I think it would do the same thing. I can still see the grass in my yard.

Mr. Deb

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 03:27 pm:

Uncle Chuck, you silly guy, been thinking about you all day. Got a big "ole" pot of chili simmering away! It's gonna be so hot we'll have to roll around in the snow to cool off! Like I always say, if it brings tears to your eyes, then it's gonna be good!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 03:32 pm:

Derek, you must eat an awful lot of pasties, you're starting to look like one!! That is one very amusing profile picture!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 03:35 pm:

Now the chili is also reminding me of "Cha-Cha", the "Hot Latin Dancer"! OLE!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 03:46 pm:

Chili sounds good to me. What time are we eating? How big is your dance floor?

By Suzy Lofquist (Suzymn41) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 03:46 pm:

Joanie:
We've had two Westies and two Scotties and they love winter, rollicking about in the snow. I think they're definitely winter hardy(hearty). Of course we always bring them in when they've had their fun! I've been told summer is much harder on the Scotties because they can't tolerate the heat.
We still have one Scottie and she's a charm.
Joey looks like a cutie too.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 04:31 pm:

Suzy, Joey thinks he's a German Sheperd, almost got a Scottie, love both breeds!

Cha-Cha, you'll have to dance for your supper. I'll hang a sombrero on the mailbox so you can find your way!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 04:45 pm:

Muy buena! I am actually thinking of making pasties one of these days in the near future. My mouth waters when I see them on this site. I tell my friends about them and they ask if I eat them with gravy. Of course, I tell them that is sacrilegious. A real Yooper would NEVER eat a pasty with gravy. What could they be thinking??!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 04:48 pm:

Cindy, you need to order the pasties on this site, they are the best!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 04:54 pm:

That's a good idea. Perhaps I will do that, but I also want to teach some of my troll friends how to make them.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 06:04 pm:

Out of the mouths of babes:

A four-year-old girl was learning to say the Lord's Prayer. She was reciting it all by herself without help from her mother. She said, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us some e-mail. AMEN

Have a great evening, gotta go eat that chili!

I just added a postcard picture and info to the discussion on Pine Mtn. Ski Jump from Monday's discussion. Betty Catalano sent it in to us here at Pasty Central. Click on the above link to check it out!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 08:25 pm:

Hmmm, I must not be a real yooper then!! I love my pasty with a side of mashed potatoes and yes, gravy!!! However, I also eat them with a little ketchup and tobasco and sometimes even with A1.

I guess we all can't be perfect... :P

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - 10:50 pm:

Hey kj, I like the picture in your profile. Very nice.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 08:59 am:

I think A1 sauce would be good with a pasty. I'll have to try that, but no gravy.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 09:45 am:

Cha-Cha, some of the Finns put applesauce on their pasties - - - YUCK!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 09:52 am:

I like Ketchup on mine, made some last month. My Brother took some out of my freezer when he saw it. The poor guy is married to a Cleveland girl and she doesn't even like Pasties! We overlook that flaw she is great otherwise.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 11:17 am:

Hey Deb S.- It's only about 30 years old!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 11:29 am:

I can see eating applesauce WITH a pasty, but not ON a pasty. Eeewwwww.....different strokes for different folks.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Friday, January 19, 2007 - 11:00 am:

Did you ever TRY it? Not much different from meatloaf and applesauce.
For myself, I like strawberry jam on my salami sandwich. But that's an aquired taste.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, January 19, 2007 - 11:21 am:

There is a sandwich called the Monte Cristo where you take turkey and ham and white cheese (not sure what kind right now) and then dip the whole thing like french toast and fry it up and then serve it with strawberry jam. It is actually very good, so, OK, I won't knock pasties with applesauce. :o)

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Friday, January 19, 2007 - 01:56 pm:

I have been known to put Miracle Whip on a Pasty.Ketchup is the only other, however A-1 sounds okay if you got a dry one made with deer or stew meat.Made with chicken dose not deserve to be called a Pasty! Ground round lean hamburger Pasty, cole slaw,Chow Chow, butter milk, and cheese-cake would be my last meal if i ever had to choose one.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, January 19, 2007 - 04:23 pm:

I make my pasties with Italian sausage (the Turkey Store/Jenny O brand, 7% fat) made from ground turkey and also lean ground beef. They are very tasty.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Friday, January 19, 2007 - 05:42 pm:

Ah, David - chow chow? What's that?

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Friday, January 19, 2007 - 09:17 pm:

Danbury, Chow Chow may be hard to explain, think of relish, pickel's,pearl onions,in a mustard sauce and has a little wang to it.Grandma made her own,i can find it here in the south, still called Chow Chow, but not the same taste or color found in the U.P.Someone will have to help me,it has more things in it.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 01:06 am:

Hi Danbury. Chow Chow is a thick piccalilli of Chinese origin. It can be made with several kinds of vegetables such as celery, cauliflower, french beans, cucumbers, corn, tomatoes and mangos. The rich coloring of Chow Chow comes from mustard and turmeric put in the recipe. I believe the one with the mango is more spicy.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 05:48 am:

Thanks, Beverly and David. Sounds good - spicy.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 02:46 pm:

It is very good!Thank you Beverly for finishing the jar for me.
