A shot of Michigan Tech eight years ago shows statues well underway. Tech students will return to a snow drought when they start coming back this weekend. Let's get more of those "snow welcome" signs.

Good morning!

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 07:19 am:

Good Morning! The cold air has finally arrived in Ohio, nasty, old people don't like cold weather but don't want to leave Ohio so I guess I will put up with it. Have a great day.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 08:33 am:

I'm very interested to see what the tech students will do this year with so little snow. The snow statues in previous years have been so awesome, but what can they do with so little snow? Maybe their unlimited ingenuity will create lovely little intricate things.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 08:43 am:

Maybe they will go to Mt Ripley with trucks and beg.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 09:17 am:

Let's get Cindy to do her snow dance!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 09:32 am:

No snow dances outta me...only hot latin dancing. Having grown up in the western UP, I've seen enough snow to last a lifetime. They will have to make ice sculptures this year instead of using snow.

By Kelly Kidd (Ellykay) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 09:55 am:

We are getting a cold snap here in central California. Could get down into the teens tonight, they even say there is a chance of snow for us in the Central Valley. It must be the snow that the U.P. is missing. We'd be glad to send it your way.

Bonsai snow statues this year? Nooooo! :-(

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 11:00 am:

Chilly Willy is here in E.TN. Make a pot of 3 alarm chile Bill,so when out on a hike you'll have to do do it in the creek to keep the woods from burning down.

Someone should ask people to load up their pickups with snow from their yard and drop it off at Tech.
Forecast here says stormy weather Sunday and Monday.
Hope travel back to MTU is ok.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 12:21 pm:

The snow in my yard would only fill a bucket, but if everyone has a bucket!

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 12:25 pm:

Believe it or not, out here in Oregon (just north and west of Portland), my kids have a snow day. They even had snow at the sea side, which is very rare. IF I could send some to Tech I would, so they don't have to make the Bonsai statues. But if they have to make Bonsai statues, I can see those kids making them in the shapes of atoms, molecules, or perhaps computer micro-chips!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 12:27 pm:

I've seen some beautiful ice carvings, but they can't hold a candle to real snow statues! I do love the ice the Tech students use in the statues for window panes, etc. Remember the McDonald's they made one year with ice table tops, condiments, sign board, etc?

I actually found this site through looking at the Tech live web cams to watch some of the statues being made.

Maybe one of our tech savvy friends will search the archives and post some picts of previous statues for our new friends.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 02:07 pm:

Talking about the Tech students sure brought back some memories of my son Bill. Found one of his "sublimal" letters and thought I would post it:

30 below windchill out here in north dakota as im typing this...

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 05:34 pm:

Just got back from town and it's so cold here in Illinois I actually saw hitchhikers holding up pictures of thumbs.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 05:44 pm:

Derek, Where are you in North Dakota? My son is going to college in Grand Forks and it's always so cold there.

Maija, Out here in MN they always make ice sculptures! They are not nearly as nice as the statues we got at Michigan Tech. I just don't think they're as pretty. But the U of MN always does them because there's usually not a lot of snow here.

By derek tuoriniemi (Derek) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 06:01 pm:

Deb, Im also in Grand Forks at UND, its my 3rd year out here...hasnt been nearly as cold out here as my first year out here but still cold by all means.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 07:14 pm:

Derek, This is Ryan's 3rd year too. He's studying biology!! He seems to like it there despite the cold.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 08:14 pm:

Gee, I feel like a stranger posting here it's been so long!! I will be in Michigan tomorrow actually, just not the UP, and not for the reasons I'd like to be there for. My very close friend (like a Grandfather to me) passed away last Saturday and the services are in Gaylord this Saturday. I have to fly into Detroit and drive the 4 hours north though. I'm just hoping the weather isn't going to be too nasty; the last I heard there could be a little ice in lower Michigan on Sunday.....

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 09:15 pm:

Who was that masked 'Eclogite'? ;o)

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 09:26 pm:

Capt. Paul (Eclogite) sorry to hear the passing your friend. Wishing the best for all of you.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 09:31 pm:

Drive safely Capt. Paul. A sad journey to be sure. We'll be thinking
of you.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, January 12, 2007 - 08:09 am:

Capt. paul- nothing to worry about it warmed up down here in lower Mi. Have a safe drive, wish you the best.
