By
Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:53 am:

We just returned from breakfast and I opened up Pasty Net and the picture came on and I hit refresh and walla! Pure luck! My fast days are behind me. Thank you!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:22 am:

Very nice sunrise!

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:33 am:

Good Morning all!!! 31 degrees and cloudy here in Houghton. Have a great day.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:35 am:

A "cutesy" good morning. Beautiful sunrise.

By FJL (Langoman) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 11:01 am:

I don't think Danbury would agree with that........) It is a perfect sunrise. Nothing better than to be a early riser.....

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 11:07 am:

Hi Langoman. Why not?

By FJL (Langoman) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 11:11 am:

The word "cutesy" seems to upset you.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 11:28 am:

Langoman: You've got mail. Put together hastily, so it might sound somewhat stern - not intended.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 11:29 am:

Oops - take the next post, after the two mentioned, too. I just happen to think that's a little much.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 11:38 am:

David Soumis: just read your last post of that discussion that made Joanie post several times over it. On the risk of being highly offensive, - you've got mail, too.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 11:38 am:

A second good morning from Mishawaka, IN.
NKR, thanks for posting the great sunrise from Copper Harbor. It is beautiful. Back to school tomorrow.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 11:40 am:

Oops, sorry. Wrong button.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 12:04 pm:

Sorry, me again. Happy Birthday Captain!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 12:15 pm:

Happy birthday Capt. from dark and dreary Berkley Michigan. Hope you have many returns and have a ride in the I think it is a Road Runner but I am probably wrong.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 12:36 pm:

Well, it's the Jets at the Patriots, should be a great game. Go Patriots!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 12:43 pm:

Joanie, I'm with you on that one. I just love Tom Brady who is an ex-Wolverine!!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 01:12 pm:

And he's cute too!

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 01:57 pm:

By Sandra H. (Wasayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 02:08 pm:

Wow! I haven't seen a sunrise that beautiful since I left the U.P.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 02:17 pm:

Many thanks on your birthday, Capn Paul, for the much-needed intelligent contributions to this site.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 02:33 pm:

Yes, he really is. 3rd and goal right now. Go Pats!!!!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 02:53 pm:

Danbury and all...I don't get offended easily...maybe if someone called me un-American or similar. Remember the old sticks and stones poem?
And I sent a reply

Vollwerth...I just had a McDonald's burger, or whatever that stuff is....I'd much rather have a ring of bologna anyday. Probably not much better for you though :)
Nice snow covering

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 03:05 pm:

David S.-I agree with you, good ole Vollwerths ring bologna. I like it cut up in a frying pan with green pepper and onion. Yum. But a bologna sandwich is always a favorite too.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 03:20 pm:

David, have you ever cooked up some spaghetti, doused it with butter/margarine, salt & pepper and served it with boiled ring bologna? It is to die for!

I don't get offended easily either. I realize that everybody is entitled to their own opinions.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 03:27 pm:

A nice UP sunrise for your birthday, Capt. Paul. I guess the only thing better would be to experience it in person. Hope it's been a good birthday all day.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 03:34 pm:

Hey Deb...about the only way I ever eat it is sandwich...or sometimes cooked in a pan, like spam :) with eggs or whatever.
It tastes good with maple syrup over it too.

My mom usually sends a Vollwerth holiday package for Christmas...except this year :(

What's interesting, I've never seen ring bolgna except from Vollwerth. I would think there are other sausage makers that do rings though.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 03:40 pm:

Oh my goodness Deb....buttered noodles (actually margarined noodles, but that doesn't sound right!) in any shape or form and Vollwerth's bologna (ring or lunch meat)...that's one of my favorites!! It must be a Lake Linden thing? :->

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 03:48 pm:

Perhaps ring bologna is a german (or european) thing, since it's quite common here. Can't have any in the fridge 'cause if I do it happens that at night, after bedtime, I'll get that irresistible desire ... I could run through a 1 1/2 pound ring in three days, just snacking on it.

Replied.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 03:49 pm:

David, you live in Wisconsin! You know, home of cheese, beer & sausage! There is Abbyland ring bologna out here as well as Schweigert's. I'm spoiled by Vollwerth's, so the only kind I like out here is the beef Schweigert's. It's the closest I can find to Vollwerth's. Maple syrup? You've got to be kidding me?

Mary, been eating buttered spaghetti all my life. We loved it as kids. Didn't start adding ring bologna to it until Ron decided he liked it that way. Try it, it's delicious! Add a few green olives or dill pickles and you can't beat it. At the mention of olives and dill pickles, Ron has begun to gag. LOL He says try parmesan cheese on the spaghetti. But nope, only with sauce will I do that.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 03:52 pm:

David S. Koegel's Meats has been making ring bologna for years. They have very good products. I think Koegel hot dogs are the # 1 seller in this area. I know they are sold in many areas of Michigan. Here is a link to their web site. http://www.koegelmeats.com/
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CAPT. PAUL! Thanks for the tip Dr. Nat

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 04:21 pm:

That's what I was gonna say, too, JH! Just made my world-famous (family-famous anyway) ground bologna sandwiches for our Christmas Eve party.

By timd (Timd) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 04:21 pm:

Deb, the Pat's won, Go Brady.
As in buttered noodle's, love them.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 04:27 pm:

my mom used to grind up the bologna and add ground up pickles and mayo for sandwiches. That was a pretty good mix :)

Guess I better head down to the store and find the ring bolgna.
-
I actually quit eating sausage or any type of prepared meat like that...trying to lose weight and eat a more healthy mix...like fruits, vegetables, and natural/organic food, not all that prepared, packaged stuff....although the weight loss hasn't happened yet...its only been 5 years, what do you want? LOL ... it took 20 to get this way. :)

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 04:35 pm:

Sandwich Spread, yum.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 04:36 pm:

Funny stuff, Dave. Wish I could eat fruits and veggies, but with Crohn's disease, you're pretty limited unless they're cooked. Therefore I eat things like apple pie, blueberry pie, etc. LOL
You can still eat that stuff, just not all the time.

Tim, Tommy boy looked pretty good! Go Pats! And not buttered noodles cuz the water stays in the noodles but you can rinse it off of the spaghetti.

By JARMO ITÄNIEMI (Japei) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 04:38 pm:

Hi hi.. .Finn pics;

http://www.staf.fi/joutsen/kuvat_matkalta9.html

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 04:39 pm:

Marsha, Koegels is the only kind of hot dogs of bologna we buy. I have never tryed Vollwerths. Maybe next time we get to the UP we will.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 04:49 pm:

Oh man, Deb, sure didn't know you had Crohn's disease, so sorry, that is no fun. Have a good friend in Coal City that has it and know what you are going through.
On another note, when I was living in Austria one of my favorite dishes was, what my mother called "Haute". It was fried bologna with scrambled eggs in the middle. I sure miss her and those good old days. Meat, back then was a real commodity, soup bones were all we ever had and it was the best. I really think we are so spoiled.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 05:05 pm:

Pretty cool story.

By timd (Timd) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 05:05 pm:

David, when my sister & I were young, my Mom made it wih ham, very tasty!!!

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 05:32 pm:

What a coincidence! I am going to have Vollwerth's ring balonga tonight for supper. My sister sent us a gift pack for Christmas. Bless her!!! We used to have the ground up baloney sandwich spread also. It was so good. I have been making my own sandwich spreads lately as I have lost my taste for lunch meat.

By Sandra H. (Wasayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 05:53 pm:

Why do I get hungry whenever I enter this site? Hmmm...sausage? spaghetti? pasties? I ran out and bought the ingredients for pasties yesterday but now I'm thinking sausage spaghetti instead. That is a tasty dish. I think I'm going to like this site. I've been on it two days and have two meals all planned already:>)

By Sandra H. (Wasayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 06:45 pm:

Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie),
I am glad to hear you're thinking of retiring in Ontonagon. My parents would agree that it is a wonderful place to retire. They are older (75 and 82) so the cold air gets their lungs and airways sometimes. Other than that life has been good for them there. The cost of living there is relatively low and they both drive still. They are also able to get around by walking and riding bikes in the summer.

If you have any questions about the area, please feel free to ask me. If I do not know, I can probably get the answer for you. Besides my parents lots of my relatives and friends still live in the area.

What part of town are you considering?

By a m hill (Lvcamnotes) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 06:47 pm:

thumbgardener,

koegel's viennas are the best i've ever had.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 07:13 pm:

Lvcamnotes, I agree. We wouldn't think of using anything but a Koegels vienna for a chile dog. I also like the Koegels all beef hot dogs. We don't eat hot dogs and bologna very often, but when we do that's the kind we eat.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 07:39 pm:

Does anyone know the name of the cheese and sausage shop just north of Green Bay; it's on Hwy. 41, I believe it's in Lena. It starts with the letter "K" and is on the west side of the highway? I always stop there whenever I go to Green Bay and wanted to see if they have a website but can't remember the name.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:04 pm:

I went to school many a days with that in my Lassie Lunchbox David S.My Mom ground it up just like that too.

Okay Sport Fan's...Now don't run for the sports page..Example; Green Bay are the Packers, Detroit are Lions...What are some names of ( any sport teams) that the nickname Dose Not end in S ? No prize other then to boast.Off the top of my head i can think of three.Other then Hockey and Football i'am not much of a fan..

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:19 pm:

Daveofmohawk,
It's Kugels. It's a must stop on the way to Green Bay. Their cheese curds are the best!

Wild are one, Magic are another, along with the Avalanche, Red Sox, White Sox, Lightning. How many more?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:23 pm:

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:26 pm:

Utah Jazz!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:30 pm:

Miami Heat, didn't look, either.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:36 pm:

Thank you. I got tired of thinking! I thought it was Florida but couldn't come up with it.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:37 pm:

Laurie, I was going to tell him to ask you. I knew you'd know the answer.

David, where are you? You ask a question and then disappear in a cloud of dust!!!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:43 pm:

David H.: My lunchbox was Superman. I was so embarrassed to have a boys' lunchbox, but now it's OK since it's worth about $750! Does that make me an antique?

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:47 pm:

Deb,that's the only one I could think of. I think David H. needs to come back on here and declare you the winner! You were the quickest and had the most answers.
Marsha, did you actually save the lunch box? Most people wish they had.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:48 pm:

Here's one for all of you. There are only 3 words in the English language that end in the letters "gry". One is hungry, another is angry. Does ANYBODY know what the 3rd is? We can not figure it out.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 08:56 pm:

I know the answer, so I will not give it away...unless you want me too :)

By moi (Moi) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:09 pm:

Deb S.:
Here's a long page of info on the riddle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gry

Apparently there are many different answers, but no one good solution.
Darn,I was hoping for an "Oooooh, how did I miss that?" kind of answer.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:22 pm:

I don't think anybody missed any.I didn't think anyone would think of the Sox,good job Deb.I didn't see any new ones since i was asked that question 3 years ago.Sorry for taking off. I have dial-up and the phone was needed. Please forgive me eh?Wasn't that fun for a change of pace, those lunch boxes can be a pretty penny now a day.I see alot of the old paddle cars for sale around here.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:30 pm:

Did anybody else have that tune in their head all day after going to the link on the Heikki Dave R.link.Marty Robbins El Paso with the words changed to, Out in the western U.P.town Tivolia i fell in love with a blond finnish girl.Been in my head all day. Thanx for that link who ever it was?

By Sandra H. (Wasayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:38 pm:

When my husband asked me the *gry riddle many years ago, I racked my brain for days trying to come up with the answer. Thank God for the internet! Now I can tell him I know the answer to his riddle.

I had a metal United Airlines lunchbox. My parents still have it along with all the other memorabilia: extra long skiis with cable bindings, an old canvas tent large enough to hold an army, our first calculator in the early 70s (it could only do basic math). Of course everything is full of mildew so I doubt if there is anything of any worth anymore but it sure is fun to look at.

By Sandra H. (Wasayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:40 pm:

David,
Do you still have that link? I would like to hear that?

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:43 pm:

we've been slowly throwing or gving away all the old stuff. All we have left are the memories. Its just too hard to keep hauling it around. Our house was so full of stuff there was no room for anything. Now we live in a simple way.
Hopefully alzheimers wont set in before we croak so we can dream of the old stuff.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:45 pm:

Yes, I still have the lunchbox. It's on a shelf in my family room. We also collect peddle cars, which I assume you meant instead of paddle cars. (Although the peddle boats are worth a lot!)

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:45 pm:

It was a read link by (inwis) in saturday's what's Up page on Heikki story.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:48 pm:

Interesting topics on the What's Up page today.
Getting sleepy, I'm outta here.
Nitety, nite.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 09:57 pm:

Did anyone check out today's"Marquette Mining Journal"? There
were a couple of interesting articles. The museum is planning an
exhibit about "What Makes a Yooper a Yooper." I bet a lot of
people on this site would be able to make interesting contributions.
There's a question about Yooper food. Certainly were a lot of
unusual ways to eat bologna in today's entries. Maybe I'll have to
enter my dad's bologna stew...

By Sandra H. (Wasayooper) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 10:02 pm:

Thanks David. I see inwis' links on Heikki. Now I know the real story...and all these years I thought Heikki was a real man.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 10:28 pm:

3 Fuller Brush salesmen where in Houghton and needed a room for the night. They went to a motel and the desk clerk said," it will cost $30.00."Good deal so they took the room.Afew minutes later the Bell Boy knocked on their door. One salesman awnsered and the Bell Boy said," sorry we charged you to much, here is $5.00 back." Salesman said," thanx here is a $2.00 tip."And then he put $1.00 in his pocket and gave the other 2 guy's each a $1.00 too.So it cost the 3 of them $9.00 each.
9 x 3 = 27 the Bell Boy got 2 makes 29 Where did the other dollar go?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, January 7, 2007 - 10:50 pm:

That's easy David, it went to pay the hotel tax!!! ;-)

Actually, if you look at it another way it makes sense. 30 - 1 for each guy (3) = 27 - 2 for the bellboy = 25.

Thanks for all the b-day wishes; I've been a little under the weather the past couple days so I've only been reading and not posting lately.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 06:04 am:

JH (Thumbgardener) I have to agree with you 100%Koegel's is the best hot dog ever. I know live in the Upper Peninsula but either myself or friends who visit downstate bring back me all of the goodies I could possibly want. They have the best liver sausage I have ever had as well as smoked sausage!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 07:58 am:

Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) According to the web site, some Koegels products are sold in a few areas of the UP. I believe the farthest west is in Marquette at Walmart and GFS.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Monday, January 8, 2007 - 11:52 am:

If they do see them at Walmart and GFS I have never seen them there. TY JH very much! I am orginally from Merrill, MI last town in Western end of Saginaw County.
