You know the old saying that "a picture is worth a thousand words," right? Well, these two shots from Chris Koskiniemi are the kind of photos that saying was "coined" for. Just one look at those snow covered rocks, the ice hanging on for dear life and in the second photo floating in the splashing water, you can just feel the cold right down to your bones. But, no matter, even with that chill emanating from her waters, Lake Superior can still capture you with her frigid beauty.

Beautiful Lake Superior pics!

Polar Bear swim warning!

By Therese (Therese) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 07:19 am:

The second looks like the break just below the red log cabin at that enchanting resort just two miles west of Copper Harbor -- sorry, my coffee hasn't kicked in yet so I can't remember the name. I was there two October's ago and fell in love with it. Hope to return one day.

Superior pictures today!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 07:26 am:

Therese, I think I know where you're talking about because i think we stayed there summer before last. It's a nice spot. These pictures are great!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 07:55 am:

I know exactly where the second shot is, but it's a little hard to explain. It's on a fairly sharp curve on M26 where a little stream flows into the Lake between Esrey and Dan's Point; quite a bit west of Copper Harbor. I have a photo in my album from the same cove in fall during a storm but my photo was taken right on the beach. It was fun trying to dodge the waves, but not fun trying to keep the camera dry.......

It doesn't matter what time of year it is, Lake Superior always looks beautiful!

Very nice photos!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 07:58 am:

Therese, are you thinking of the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge? It is a great place to stay & a fun golf course. We first stayed there 20-some years ago. They just got their construction loan approved, and they are now working on an expansion for a conference center, etc, if I remember correctly. If all goes well, it will be open year around, beginning next winter.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 08:00 am:

Maybe it is my tea that hasn't kicked in yet. Keweenaw Mountain Lodge would not overlook Lake Superior. Sorry!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 08:04 am:

Marianne, I think this place was called the Eagle Harbor Lodge. They have about 6 cabins and are about 5 miles from Copper Harbor, heading towards Eagle Harbor and right on the lake. We stayed there a couple of summers ago and when I saw this picture, it's the first place I thought about.

By Mike B. Wishin I was back in the Yoop (Mikeb) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 08:07 am:

Nope, not the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. That has got to be the cut at the Eagle Lodge Lakeside cabins just below the red cabin, as Therese said.

The pictures finally look like winter.

By dotti caldwell (Dotti) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 08:49 am:

Wonderful shots! Always like pics of your big lake. Brrrrrr.....

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 09:49 am:

Brooke, aye, that it does finally look like winter!

My two youngest sons finally got to go sledding here in mid-Michigan on Friday. Although they had plenty of snow, it had a layer of ice on top. They were happy to be able to go sledding, at last, though.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 10:45 am:

We were also finally to go sledding in Pinckney, but south of hear near Adrian I hear they still don't have the grass covered.

Now that's the way i like my shot's, on the rocks.
Is this where what used to be called,or still called The Devil's Wash Tub?

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 12:12 pm:

Dave, glad you mentioned the Devil's Washtub. Very hard to find anymore. Could this be nearby?

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 12:58 pm:

We've been to the Devil's Washtub and managed to find it again about 1-1/2 years ago. Here's a picture of it from my gallery, this one taken about 12 years ago. https://pasty.com/pcam/album/marsha/Devil_s_Washtub_2.sized.jpg

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 01:08 pm:

NOW THAT LOOKS MORE LIKE THE UP IN JANUARY ! When i was in Houghton the second weekend of January it was almost GREEN !!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 01:51 pm:

Devil's Washtub is closer to Copper Harbor. Where the second shot was taken, if your driving along and not looking for it, you will drive right past it!! If your driving west on 26 towards Eagle Harbor, just past this point is a dirt road to the right that leads back to some houses, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of that road......

By Rebecca Middlebrook (Mspuppers) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 02:37 pm:

I believe the place you're thinking of is called the Eagle Lodge Lakeside. My husband and I stayed there a few years ago and absolutely loved it. Our 2 labs also enjoyed their morning and evening dip in the big lake.

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 06:50 pm:

The Devil's washtub is a couple of miles West of Copper Harbor. It is easy to find now that a new B&B has been built on the corner of M-26 where trail leads to lake. I understand the ownership of property is in dispute and people are allowed to walk there again while it is settled.A piece of the arch broke away a few years back so it is not quite as dramatic. I took a pic of it from the air on 12/21/06. I am posting it on my gallery now, you can see it by clicking here: Devil's Washtub & new B&B

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 07:45 pm:

The Devil's Washtub is the last curve before you go into Copper Harbor. That's how I always know how to find it. I love going there. It's just so amazing. Just wish I were brave enough to jump in, but I'm a chicken! My step-son very nearly fell in one day though.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 08:36 pm:

E. Neil, great pics!

Would love to hear Superior sing right now, really miss her!
