Ashley Byykkonen had a unique opportunity to meet a curious little deer at her friend's not too long ago. This little deer was spotted on the roadside just hanging around and seemed quite tame. Concerned folks managed to get it to their farm and inside a barn to give it something to eat. The adults observing the deer thought perhaps it might be blind, since it seemed to go right over things in its way, instead of around them in the barn.

The kids of course fell in love with "Pebbles", while the adults weren't quite sure about the rules on keeping a wild animal, but found it obvious that this tame little creature would not survive in the woods. They really didn't get a chance to find out about the rules and what to do though, since the little critter one morning was found stuck in a piece of farm equipment, like it had crawled in, perhaps thinking it might be a good place to sleep. Help was enlisted and the farm machinery taken apart to free the little deer, who of course was scared and fighting.

Soon after that incident, he got out of the barn and was found again by the side of the road, weak and trembling. They brought him back to the barn, but he just grew weaker and not long after died. Of course everyone felt bad, but the children especially were heartbroken. Those kids just thought of this deer as something cute and fun to feed, not realizing what they would learn from this wild creature, such as the cycles of life in nature, about the ways that animals come into our lives and touch them in ways we never imagine and about giving to others without expecting anything in return. Yes, a sad ending indeed, but also life lessons they will never forget.

Poor deer and poor kids, a sad way to learn about life.

Thats a sad story, good thing the little guy was well taken care of at the farm. Had they not found him he probably would have not survived as long as he had.

What a sad story, but you're right Mary; animals touch us in a way that nothing else can. How lucky that deer was to have someone take care of him. Seeing deer always makes me smile - I live in a condo with a 10 acre field behind me and never fail to get excited when I see deer back there. Caught site of a mom and her youngster just last evening. One of God's most beautiful creatures, if you ask me.
