In case you aren't an early riser and don't often catch the sun coming up, you'll especially enjoy today's photo. According to Aladino Mandoli, this scene is the sunrise on Dead River, which is in Marquette County. Great play of light shining through the trees on the snow covered ice. Now if that isn't the perfect place to watch a wintry sunrise in the making, I don't know what is. Just add coffee (or tea) and enjoy!

I think this is such a great way to start the day. What a beautiful sunrise. Thanks, Aladino!

Hi Another morning sight right now, if you have an unrestricted view of the horizon, is a comet, Comet McNaught (see link). I tried this morning down here in SE Michigan but there were clouds. It's also available in the evening. I wish I was near one of the Great Lakes...for that & other reasons.
And if I weren't a morning person, a sight like that sure would make me.

What a beautiful picture. I know what I wish I was doing on that "untracked" snow. Either making tracks with snow shoes or making snow angels. Finally, we have enough snow in Painesdale to get the old shoes out and ready to go. I'm so excited!!!

Kathyl, Thanks for the link to the information about the comet! I can't wait to look for it tonight! Aladino, Another great photo! I like your album.

No nice pic of snow available for people in Esky (no snow here at all), but the temp is nice and cool at 10 above, and there is lots of sunshine. My wife and I are just back from our daily walk to the park along Little Bay de Noc. Today we hit the north shore with the long reach of water going up miles toward Gladstone. A beautiful view -- made even lovelier by seeing a big ore boat heading into the ore dock. We have had a lot of oreboats lately. Maybe they are getting their last trips in before the season finally closes?

Today here in Beautiful Berlley, the sky is blue and the puffy white clouds are invading the window over my desk. It is cold and there is just a hint of white on the ground. Jimmie the fat white cat is curled up in front of the register wondering when the heat will come on again and I am about to go on an adventure looking for a new bathtub and enclosure. So far my search has been futile. Why cant we have a bathroom like we had in Hubbell, oh yea Precious wont make the trip out in the snow.

the APOD site referenced above is actually co-run by a professor at MTU.
They have Astronomy pictures going back to 1996, many by the Hubble space telescope

I am at work long before the sun comes up, except maybe in June. So thats what a winter sunrise looks like?! Beautiful!

Lorelei, so glad you got snow, I know you've been wanting to break in those snow trackers! We have friends that just went up there to snowmobile, guess they went to the right part of the UP!

To Charles (in Esky)-- You may see more ore boat traffic in Escanaba after next week when the Soo Locks close for the season. Escanaba stays open as long as the bay stays clear of ice. --- Charles (from Esky)

We just went out and looked for Comet McNaught. It's a lovely clear night but just down at the horizon in the west south west, there is smoke. So we didn't spot the comet, but there surely were lots of planes coming out of Atlanta.
By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:35 pm:
So eugenia r. thompson (Ert), I guess your attempt to see the comet was all for (Mc)Naught?
By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 08:33 pm:
Good one, FRNash, yes, indeed, all for naught! And the next two nights are supposed to be partly cloudy so I guess the whole thing is all for naught! :(
