it's also Buy Nothing Day. A day to spend time with loved ones, and reject the crazy consumerism in this society (which makes the rich richer, more than anything else).

I stopped buying Christmas gifts years ago. We all have enough Stuff. Instead, I make contributions to charities in friends' names; or buy family members memberships in non-profit organizations that they're interested in; or sponsor a manatee or plant a tree, for friends interested in that kind of thing; or take a kid hiking, to the bookstore, or to a concert; or give a gift certificate to relieve frazzled parents for a weekend.

Instead of shopping and wrapping and fretting and running up your charge card, think about volunteering for the humane society, ringing a bell for the Salvation Army, spending time at a nursing home, or joining a literacy council and teaching someone to read.

Very well said Becca, if more people felt that way it would be a much better world.

Nice ideas, Becca. I still give gifts but try to make them more meaningful. One year after Dad died I wrote a brief biography and illustrated it with photos taken from the day he came home from the hospital to a month before he died, along with photocopies of his Navy papers and some of his chemical patents. Another year I got all the old family recipes from Mom and made cookbooks for the family. Once I copied two photos of Great-Grandpa and set them in double frames. One was taken when he was a young man with the mounted skin of a record-breaking timbler rattler; the other when he was ninety. I enjoyed making these gifts as well as giving them; they were a gift to me as well.

I tried that one year, Becca. Can you believe my EX-husband's family wouldn't go for the idea? They actually wanted something under the tree for them? I'm glad it is working for you. Can you see why they are my EX-? husband & famly? :)

Buy nothing day is right. Get together, eat
some good food and enjoy each other's company.
Watch a football game and spend some time
with your kids,niece,nephew. The kids
want your attention more then anything
you can buy them. They will never remember
the X-box but will recall you spending time
with them. Take them to the northland!
They never forget that! Big Sand Bay is
a good impression! Brockway Mt. is another
great spot for kids.

Thank you Becca, UP. I did exactly that in San Francisco yesterday. We had Hundreds of volunteers serving over 1200 turkeys and 600 hams to the homeless and hungry. There is not a better feeling than to see a child fed, and the smiles they give because someone cared. Asking nothing in return but the chance to do it again.
But when it comes to Christmas, I'm like a kid in a candy store, buying for others. I love Christmas, why I even believe in Santa Claus.

I hope my normal groceries didn't count today. Its just that I had the day off and I figured all the loonies would be at the mall! So even though technically I did spend money, I steered clear of all malls, gift shops, jewelry stores, internet shopping, and any other spending. Wheee......
