The Northern Lights were hot again last night, here along Superior's shore. Even Edie could see them (she has a little "night-blindness"). They were so bright in one spot out toward Isle Royale, it actually cast a visible shadow as we stood in the darkness and watched.

Still haven't mastered the art of night photography :o)

By Me in Manistique on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 07:20 am:

Was that photo taken last night?...there was one on the Gazette home page Monday also...they look familiar to me...are they Dan Urbanski's

The photo above is indeed one of Dan Urbanski's. The Gazette photo was taken by William Rice.

By Me in Manistique on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 07:26 am:

I have seen the lights here the last couple of nights....but no colors like that.

By A Rice USMC, MI on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 07:42 am:

Just a mention to all the people that served and are serving in the United States Marine Corps.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAR HEADS!

By DuneRat, Norton Shores on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 09:02 am:

Chrissy --

You might be surprised at how well you can do capturing the auroras with a video camera, either in standard mode or in low-light "nightshot" mode. The video you get will be a little grainy, but if you're talking and joking around with your family & friends within range of the camera mike, you'll get tape that's a real pleasure to review.

Just keep any other lights, such as streetlights, out of your frame, because they will dominate the camera's metering system and it will fail to capture the more subtle light of the skyshow.

By jim inFort wayne on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 09:09 am:

we have been trying to see the lights down here but it has been cloudy. should we be able to see them down here in indiana?

By bobt on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 09:19 am:

I have been ouside in Royal Oak, Michigan for the last three nights, all clear skies, from sundown to midnight, and I haven't seen one iota of the northern lights. On Sunday I was even talking to my dog about how clear it was and all the stars that could be seen. When I saw Pasty.net comments on Monday, I made a special effort to be out and looking, but I have not seen any displays. I don't know why, since everyone all around me have seen them.

By Chrissy on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 09:42 am:

DUNE RAT NORTON SHORES

By Leisa MI on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 09:51 am:

i'm in Lansing and have been out for the last 3 nights and haven't seen a thing...i'm so disappointed....

By Michigander in North Carolina on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 10:31 am:

I don't know what time of night y'all were out (those of you who haven't been able to see them), but I remember from my days "up in the north" that they're best seen around midnight!

By Larry IN on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 10:57 am:

I live in Somerset, IN and last night at 2:00AM we had a great show of the northern lights that went on for over thirty min. Since Somerset is smaller than Hubell - it is 60 miles north of Indianapolis to give you a better reference for location.

Is your CAPS LOCK stuck, or are you SHOUTING ON PURPOSE?

By Bob on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 11:53 am:

We drove back from the Bash in Ann Arbor on sunday evening.

Just as soon as it got Dark we were able to see the Northern Lights just north of West Branch!

It was an interesting night of driving, we alternated between spectacular red/green curtains of northern lights and blinding white snow showers the entire trip back to Houghton!

They were the best I've seen the lights in a long time.

By kc, MN on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 12:26 pm:

Does anyone have a video of the Northern Lights that you could download? I haven't seen the lights in years. It's definitely not possible living in the cities. Just wondering...

It's not a video, but it's the next best thing...check out Tim Minich's Gallery for a wonderful
slideshow he captured of the display!

Rice, USMC, where did the name 'jarheads' come from in
describing U.S. Marines?

By downstate don on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 - 11:08 pm:

That is a great picture Charley. Since green is
my favorite color. It sure adds to the picture.

My Mother was to be buried on Memorial Day 1990 = so, the evening before, my brother and I were in Rousseau - and on our drive back to his dome in Mass City, at about ll:00 p.m., we saw the most beautiful display of the Northern Lights. We both agreed that the undulating bluish show of lights was like a message from our Mom to our family. And here is the rest of the story - the next day when we drove back to Mass City from the Liminga Cemetery - low and behold - a glorious rainbow in the mist of a soft rain. Then we felt humbled - we also felt at peace.

By JWilson593, Ohio on Thursday, November 11, 2004 - 08:16 am:

Great slide show...the lights were seen down here in ohio!! I looked out several nights but didn't see anything, but with city lights all around, that is probably why.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Thursday, November 11, 2004 - 12:26 pm:

wonderin':
"Jarhead" - A slang term used by sailors as early as World War II to refer to members of the Marine Corps, drawing the term from the resemblance of the Marine dress blues uniform, with its high collar, to a Mason jar which at the time was made from blue glass. Check similar hits in
Ask Jeeves:jarhead
