Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 08:15 am:

Please fasten your seatbelts as we cruise at an altitude up above Hubbell. If you live in or around the area, and you read those words, 'up above Hubbell', you automatically think - the Calumet Golf Course, various family farms and properties, but this shot from Rick Anderson, over at Skypixs, defines those three little words differently for us today. This is an eagle eye view of the little burg, located between Lake Linden and connected to Tamarack City. The latter and this pictured town are hard to distinguish from each other, since they somewhat blend right into each other. Rick's shot is just about a block north of the spot where Hubbell begins and Tamarack ends and shows us a number of the more famous landmarks - St. Cecelia Church, St. John's Lutheran Church, Ernie's Service, Hainault's Barber Shop, Hubbell Post Office and the Hubbell Community Building, where the Fire Department is located and many a wedding reception has been held. Hope you enjoyed your flight, we'll be landing shortly!

Nice high pic

By RD, Iowa on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 08:23 am:

Good morning. Helloooo down there.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 08:29 am:

This is an acurate glimpse of conditions this morning. The grass is still green, and no snow.

By the way, the holiday pasty delivery schedule has been posted, and the old pasty counter on the front page is twirling on up toward a quarter of a million.

Maybe this week?... 11-22-04

By Bob on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 09:00 am:

Great sky shot as always.

If you want a ground tour of Hubbell see my

What a neat picture! My house is just visible on the left hand side. Some of us aren't minding the fact that there isn't any snow - YET. We know we'll get it soon enough!

By Misplaced Yooper in Hartland on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 09:24 am:

Great photo showing my Aunt/Uncle’s and Grandmother’s houses, Peggy grandma’s house looks better than it has in a long time, good job with the repairs. 48 hours and we will be leaving for the CC.

By ed/mi on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 09:56 am:

Again a great photo by Rick and Sky-Pixs. I have many fond memories of growing up in Hubbell and hope my children have the same from our small town here in Wayne, County. Can someone post on the churchs functioning and what commercial activity there still is in town. Other great album by Bob is great also. https://pasty.com/pcam/albuo68

Skypixs are always fun to look at. I use to live in the house katty-korner from the post office about 30 years ago. When we drove by it for the first time in all thoughs years it looked like it needed to be torn down. I'm glad it's not to clear in this photo.

By pam traver, lp, mi on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 10:04 am:

Mary these ariel shots are fantastic and fabulous!!! Thanks sooooo much for bringing them to us!

By cheryl mi on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 10:05 am:

A great view of where I used to live. The old St Cecelia School that I once attended, (remember those nuns?)the St Cecelia Church where I attended years ago & the house that we lived in across the street from the church. The Post Office where as a little girl I loved going to get Grandma & Grandpa's mail. Oh & who could forget Ernie's gas station? He was(is) a wonderful friend to all of the children in the area. Fixing bikes and tires for everyone & fixing toys for the kiddies to be given at Christmas time. Hubbell holds alot of childhood memories for me & my children.

By Bob on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 10:11 am:

FYI

Ernie is still going strong with his bikes.

We dropped a bunch of used bikes off with him
last week. Seeing his geat big smile always
warms the heart. ;-)

By Jeff K Gaylord on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 11:16 am:

speaking of pasties....
Just had a pasty from "Albies" here in gaylord. It was one of the best packaged pasties I've ever had ! Usually those pre-packaged pasties are not very good, but this was great. So, if you are ever in a bind and CANT get a real UP pasty from pasty.com try one !

JK

Anyone know the story behind Albies? I think it is the Quaal family right? ANd, they have links to the Marquette/Ishpeming area?

By L-O-V-E Pastycam! on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 11:18 am:

I haven't been up in a plane since--!1969!--Thank you for the chance to 'fly' over the UP!
Great picture!

By Candy, CA on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 11:46 am:

Charlie, if you put all those pasties end to end, US-41 would be lined with them all the way to Assinins! (figuring between 8-10 inches per pasty). Now THAT would be a yummy trip!

By Judy, Muskegon on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 11:59 am:

What a wonderful thing to see this morning. My home town! Theresa from Colorado, HI from Judy up on the hill!

By KLP Southeast GA on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 12:36 pm:

Kool Pic, brings back a lot of memories. went to grade school At St Cecilia the buiding in the upper right hand corner. Also went to a lot of teen dances at the fire hall.

By Wade,MI on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 12:48 pm:

I can see me in this picture! Where is this taken from? I remember flying over the UP in the fall, but its November 22 where is the snow?

By Steve, Il. on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 01:22 pm:

Love the SkyPix. RE: Albies Pasties - they are available in Il. at Meijer Stores, in case anyone needs a quick pasty fix. I still prefer Pasty Central pasties, but when the Jones for a pasty hits, there isn't time for mail order.

By dallas,tx on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 01:24 pm:

me too

By June from Hubbell on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 01:51 pm:

Both St. Cecelia's (Catholic) and St. John's (Missouri Synod Lutheran) churches are still going strong. St. Cecelia's "shares" a priest with St. Joseph's in Lake Linden & St. John's "shares" a pastor with St. Paul's in Laurium. Commercial establishments are pretty few - Al's Supper Club/bowling alley, The Last Drop Coffee Shop (fairly new), Bob's Party Store, Ernie's, and a few beauty salons. That's about it! This town is still a great place to live, though!!

By June from Hubbell on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 01:55 pm:

Oops - I forgot a few, such as PCI, Our Lady of Mercy, etc. If you check out Bob's album (see above) you'll get a better idea.

By Karen Z from Wisconsin on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 03:35 pm:

Thanks for the neat picture. My Grandma & Grandpa Z. lived right next to the Luthern Church for many years. I always remember the noon bells too!

By Jack in CT on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 03:36 pm:

What a great picture!
At first glance it looked like a model someone had put together.
I sure do miss towns like that and the people who live in them.

By Tom, Indiana on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 - 10:21 am:

After fifty some years of seeing the copper country at ground level these are so enlightening.

And late Tuesday morning, the productivity of the nation droops as late risers hover over their keyboards thinking they'll get a first post today.

By JAD, Oskar, MI on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 - 10:24 am:

Neat shot. St. Cecelia is the patron saint of music. The church has one of the historic pipe organs in the Keweenaw. The A.B. Felgemaker organ is located in the balcony at the back of the sanctuary. It dates from around 1900 and is still played for the services. It is a 2 manual (2 keyboards)instrument with about 9 ranks (rows of pipes with different sounds such as oboe, flute, strings, etc). Up & across the street the Missouri Synod Church has a very small 1 manual organ--a newer instrument, but still unique. The historic organs in the Keweenaw are great treasures about which not many folks are aware. Example: figure about $10,000 per rank of pipes.

By Paul in Illinois on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 - 07:43 pm:

My grandparents, Fredric Haun and Clara Long were married in St. Cecelia's long ago c. 1917. My Grandmother grew up in Hubbell, while my Grandfather came from Calumet. Both were 3rd generation Copper Country; both families were at Eagle River and the Cliff in the very early years. Small world, the Copper Country, even in the boom years.

By Mike Peterson - Hartland, Michigan on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 - 09:45 am:

I can see my house (Mom's) house on the hill along with all of the places that I hung out at growing up. What a great shot. The only thing it does not convey is the incredible relief (hills) that are there.

By Lisa, WI on Thursday, November 25, 2004 - 07:25 pm:

Hi, Mom and "Big" Brother -
I noticed the lack of a hilly appearance as well, but it wasn't too hard to get my bearings. It's been fun to read through the posts as I recognize many of the names and comments. It's a great photo. Hope everyone is having a good day of thanksgiving.

By Don Paquette Wausau,WI on Friday, November 26, 2004 - 07:30 am:

I don't get to Hubbell very often even though I live only 3 hours from there in Wausau,WI. This is the first time I have seen an aerial view of Hubbell and yes the house I grew up in, is very much visable in the pic. The comments from others, did bring back a lot of memories.

By Jar.... Wisconsin on Monday, November 29, 2004 - 12:30 pm:

Davey, you remember shooting peas with a pea shooter from sling-shots front porch? Or playing on the firehall lawn, climbing the tall trees? This whole area was our playground, from the ice rink/boat landing area, where we would float boats on a string and fish. To the top of the hill by the Lutheran church where there was a old playground and we would go up into the "bush" to shoot bee-bee guns. In the winter we would sled down the church hill, having to stop by the main drag or turning right and glide as far as "Toad"s house or Glandville's. So many memories there. My grandparents house where I grew up does not look the same, nor does the town. Time goes on.

By mary sullivan georgia on Monday, November 29, 2004 - 05:19 pm:

wow this is cool. i see my uncles house in that picture, but my parents house is across the street but don;t see it there. how old is the picture?
