In November, half a century ago, they bundled little Ginger Hart in her snowsuit and introduced her to the joys of tobogganing in the U.P. (Although this doesn't seem to be a very joyful expression):

Waaah
You can see a little more of the episode in this short clip for your Windows Media Player.

We've been experimenting with streaming video, and would like to expand the daily pictures to include some sound and motion, especially for our weekly "Shoebox Memory". This was taken from a DVD set which Mel Jones has compiled at Gitche Gumee, over 4 hours of old movies showing many aspects of life in the U.P. There are 50 year old scenes from deer camp, loggers, sightseeing, youth camps, and much more. Mel is learning the ropes with video editing software, so some of this can be compiled into half hour programs on DVD. We'll let you know when they become available.

Anybody else out there have old movies of the U.P.?

That could almost be me in the snow suit sitting on the tobaggan except that I remember a lot more snow... How I miss those times and the snow....

Harry, this morning there is NO SNOW here in Eagle River, although we have some in the forecast.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 09:37 am:

By remenber up fun on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 10:46 am:

i remember climing up trap rock hill with a tobaggan it was great to go down but a pain to get back to the top it took four people to bring it back to the top who ever was in the very front would be safe but the last one on would be left half way up the hill if u didn't hang on great times

By Gretchen,CA on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 01:08 pm:

No snow for you people? Well we have some in Silverado Canyon. Yup right here in Orange County California!!!!! 10:00AM & the temperature is 39 degrees. What crazy weather. Have a good day all.

By Mary Ann, WY on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 01:21 pm:

Reminds me of when I was growing up in the UP. I still have the tobbogan.

By Becca on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 01:37 pm:

Ya had me goin' there for a minute--I thought there was snow on the ground.

The video was fun. Would like to see some snow falling sometime, and crashing waves would be good!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 02:59 pm:

If I remember correctly (because I would have been 7 at the time)we had snow for Halloween that year. Joys of tobaggoning: as teens we would go to a city park and slide down a "shoot" that was there for tobaggoning. No hills like that here.

By M.B., IL-WI-MI on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 03:11 pm:

My mom grew up in Eagle River in the 1950's and 1960's. I remember my mom's stories about her toboganning adventures in Eagle River. As children, they would start off at the top of the hill on the road that crosses the lower bridge; slide down that winding hill; maneuver over the 90 degree angles of the lower bridge; make a sharp left; and then slide down the rest of main street of Eagle River. That was when the lower bridge, of course, was still open!

Thinking about it just gives me the heeby geebies! Cripes! :-D

Happy Holidays!

S*N*O*W!... in Arizona no less.
It's been snowing since 7AM (MST), heavy snow as of noon in Flagstaff, AZ. Current forecast is for 11 - 23 inches through Monday night.
Eat your hearts out, Yooper snowbunnies!

Cheap way to go to the UP. Wish we had some.

By Carolyn, Arizona on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 03:56 pm:

We are at the Grand Canyon in Arizona and we got over 7 inches of snow last night. I used our snowblower to clean the driveway. We are from Copper City and we moved out here almost 4 years ago. We did not sell the snowblower before we left the Copper Country. It has come in handy a few times. We are about 90 miles NW of Flagstaff where the pictures above are taken. I mean the ones sent in by someone. Not the ones of Ginger Hart.

By Wade,MI on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 04:57 pm:

I never knew Arizona got snow. They have more snow than us right now, but not for long! Let it Snow!

By Nancy E. Nelson, WI on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 06:01 pm:

Great memories--wonder how many gazillion "kids in the snow" pictures exist from people who live/lived in the yoop. Since I was the originator of the Shoebox Memories, I would like to submit this picture from probably 1950-51--I am the eldest in the picture, and the other Pasty Cam contributer is the one on the sled, Susan Hooker.

By Geri from California on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 06:02 pm:

I still have a wood tobaggon! I remember going tobaggoning frequently with my cousin, Dan and his sister, Louise. He had the first tobaggon & I prayed every Christmas that I would have my own. I finally did get one & what fun we had during those days.
It was so much fun going down but the pull up was work. I guess we had our fitness training right there. free of charge

By flewtodaytwice on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 06:19 pm:

Snow on Halloween....that is how I remember my first year at da Tech in 64. Looks like global warming is more than a theory. At least bambi gets a fighting chance with limited tracking...

By Lois Hart, Santa Catalina Island, CA on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 07:19 pm:

Hello, Charlie--What fun to see this on Pasty Net!
I recognize that coat with furballs for buttons--that's me doing the tobaggan pulling.

By Candy, windy and cool CA on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 07:35 pm:

Lois and Ginger, how cool to see you both playing in the snow! Now Kurt can pull Ginger on the toboggan, and Lois doesn't have to worry about any snow at all!

By Doug the Troll, Wixom MI on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 07:51 pm:

This brings to mind, when I was 15 or so, some 35 years ago, when I wanted a tobogan for Christmas that year. I never did get that sled, and still don't have one.

By Santa's Helper on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 09:30 pm:

Doug the Troll - :( That is such a sad story. Maybe you could ask your loved one to relay to Santa that you would like a tobogan for the 2004 Christmas. You never know. Santa might pull through after 35 years! OR you could just go buy one!

Disclaimer: If you are too old to use one and not young at heart, then don't sue me for this advice if injury or death occurs. :) Sorry. In today's culture, disclaimers are mandatory.

By no snow downstate on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 09:56 pm:

Lois
Do you remember the dog's name that jumps at the beginning of the clip? Just wondering.

By Lois Hart, Santa Catalina Island, CA on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 10:34 pm:

To "No Snow Downstate": Ginger and I were discussing on the phone what that disappearing figure was at the beginning of the clip. It almost looks to me like there is a human and a dog both. If a dog, probably it was "Frosty", our family malamute.

Speaking of snow-loving dogs...

Oh gosh I got excited too when I first saw the snow picture! The clip brought back a lot of memories from toboganing on Wetton's hill and sledding on Seppala's hill. What fun!

By A.J. Tiensivu, Georgia on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 06:30 am:

FRAN! I get to post right under your post! We're back in business! Welcome back!

Charlie... Love the streaming video of today's picture! What and addition! I hope you start to do it more often. And while you're at it, please send some of the white stuff to Georgia!

Ginger
WHAT!!! NO MAKE-UP!!!!
I was surprised to see how "new" the building to the upper right (in the film) was at one time. I always thought it was always there!
The view was something in those days, hey?

By Candy on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 11:53 am:

Lois and Ginger, it looks like your dad is putting Ginger on the toboggan, with Frosty running along side. There's a place in the clip that seems to be where the filming was stopped for a minute, too, maybe to sit Ginger back up...

By Linda in Genesee County on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 12:55 pm:

Love the Sled Dogs pulling the kids in the wagon! I wonder if they are a mix of Swiss Mountain Dog. They look like gentle giants to me.

Wanting snow for Thanksgiving.

By Ginger Hart Loosenort-Downstate Mich. on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 01:45 pm:

Hey!! Haven't had that much attention in years!
Charlie Hopper, you are in trouble. You HAD to put the approximate year on that video didn't you. Archives, my eye! I do recall that you are OLDER than I am. Too bad I don't have access to this web site. I have some great ones of you!! The trolls down here are supposed to get snow for Thanksgiving. Hope you do too! Love to your family. Ginger

By Ginger Loosenort on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 - 02:19 pm:

Hey Yoopers.

We in Grand Rapids are getting covered with snow all of a sudden. Hope you get some for the holidays.!!

By Charlie Hopper, Eagle River on Thursday, November 25, 2004 - 05:44 am:

Hey Ginger - we got a little dusting of snow overnight in Eagle River, but hardly enough to hide the grass.

Oh... I'm not so sure about the age differences. I thought I was between you and Patty. Or maybe I'm confusing it with Sage Verily's age. Anyway, we can't hide the fact we're all part of the 'half-century' club. And my hair is NOT turning gray... it's just turning loose.

Happy Thanksgiving.
