This week we took advantage of the mild weather to expand Pasty.NET's wireless network in the Keweenaw. Yesterday this took me to the top of the tower on US-41 going north from Calumet. It used to be the old DNR building, but now is owned by the CLK post of the VFW. Though it was a bit windy, the view was amazing. (Check back later for a video clip).

Also, yesterday someone asked about progress of the rebuilding project at the White House Restaurant in Mohawk. Looks like they got it roughed in before rough weather (which we're in for this weekend). We'll have a short video clip on this story later as well.

Congratulations to the Houghton High School girls basketball team, who last night advanced to the regionals in Marquette. This season WMPL and Pasty.NET have teamed up to bring you the play-by-play action on the web, and next week we'll be cheering for the Gremlins. Stay tuned!

Where's the snow?

Weatherman says we should get some by tomorrow

By Arn Wendt Coopersville, LP on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 07:12 am:

Ah!! Time to look out the window with a piece of deer salami in one hand, and a cup of hot cocoa in the other.

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 07:24 am:

I love the view from the tower. Charlie you are a lucky man to have seen that view first hand. Has been rainy down here in northern Indiana. Might get some lake effect snow closer to Thanksgiving.

By maijaMI on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 07:24 am:

Sure glad to see the White House coming back.

By Pam Traver, Fruitport, Michigan on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 07:27 am:

Glorious! Thanks for the road view... feels like I'm up there driving to Eagle Harbor.... The road vistas are so soul satisfying like I'm home... 5 years to retire in my beloved Keweenaw!!!! Please take more road/travel vistas so I can feel like I'm home..... Infinite Gratitude...Eh...

By James - Il on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 09:20 am:

Glad to see the White House is going back up. When we were there the end of September nothing had been started yet.

How high is the tower you were on?

By Dorothy, Mi on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 09:24 am:

So thrilled to see another White House going up. Is this in the same location as the old one.

By Mr. Bill on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 09:28 am:

The White House is on the same location. Last we heard, Jim hopes to be open for Christmas, yum!

By Heidi Clarkston, MI on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 10:49 am:

By Matt from Fulton in GB on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 11:06 am:

Thanks for the White house pic, Charlie!

By Lena, MN on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 11:54 am:

What is the White House?

By Mr. Bill on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

Lena

The White House was an old converted bowling alley that had morf'd into a bar and restaurant. Great food at great prices;Such as an all you can eat Thanksgiving dinner, for I think last year was $ 8.50. Great staff and personable owner.

Actually better than moms .... sorry mom.

By Judy Chesaning MI on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 01:43 pm:

What is the long strip of white that runs in front of the trees on the left of the road? It looks like a fence. There was a television program on this week about fences being put up in high deer accident areas in Michigan. Is this one of those fences? Beautiful view, Charlie. I get dizzy on the first step of a ladder!

By Cousin Jack on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 03:06 pm:

All right!
A new White House.
I purchased and drank my first glass of legal beer there during a January snowstorm many years before Al Gore invented that internet thingamajig and now they've got you climbing towers in the name of wireless, Charlie.
Will the high-tech wonders never cease?

By P. Kent, Colorado on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 03:06 pm:

Glad to see the "new" white house!
snowy day here in Denver today.
Wishing you all the best

By Al, SoCal on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 03:19 pm:

Judy Chesaning, that's the fence along the old cemetary.

By Roudy,Mi on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 03:54 pm:

That tower is TALL enough to reach the ground from where Charlie snapped that picture! Awesome!

By troll in eagle harbor on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 03:58 pm:

Pam Traver....Are you the Pam that comes up here and spends time with Lenore?

By geriFinn in California on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 04:31 pm:

SO glad the White House is coming back! I had many wonderful times there & usually the place was packed. I saw the ruins & felt a great sadness.

By Rich, Michigan on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 04:34 pm:

OK - Does anyone know who won the MTU/North Dakota football game?

By Judy Chesaning MI on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 05:35 pm:

Al,SoCal...thanks for the information about the fence.

By Candy, MTU '75 on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 06:00 pm:

Hey, Rich, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this score: Final (14) North Dakota 20 (9) Michigan Tech 3

The Huskies had a great ride this year! Congratulations to Bernie Anderson and his team for bringing da Tech this close!

By Wade,MI on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 06:14 pm:

to bad tech lost today after their great season, to bad for the injuries.

By Lori... Commerce Twp, Mi on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 07:46 pm:

I have noticed that the last 3 nights, the bridge cam takes its last picture of the lift bridge at 17:44. Is that a detail I never paid much attention to lately or has that always been the last shot of the day? The bridge looks especially pretty lately, the lighting is golden and subtle.

I must be homesick! Seems kind of silly to be posting about the bridge.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 08:37 pm:

James,

The tower is 120 feet, which I mention in this clip in Windows Media Format The audio is not very good because of the wind.

By RCW on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 10:26 pm:

Wow, great clip Charlie, you must have lot of Sisu to climb that tower

By Fran,Ga on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 11:23 pm:

Great pictures on my first day back on the computer since early Oct. The White house is looking good!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 12:34 am:

Hei Fran,GA, Tervetuloa, welcome back! We missed you.
Charlie, wasn't that the Cliffs Ridge instead of Brockway? Just wondering.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 12:37 am:

Pytavay, Charlie, like that pic from up there. It was noisy but interesting. Boy, some kids get all the luck, 'eh? :o)

By Charlie in Eagle River, Sunday AM on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 06:04 am:

Ken - The highest bump you can see in the shot above is indeed the Cliff Ridge. To the right of that - much farther in the distance - is Brockway.

People often ask if I'm afraid of heights. That doesn't bother me. I don't even mind the idea of falling all that distance. It's the sudden stop at the bottom which has me worried enough to wear a safety harness.

By Pam Traver, Fruitport/MI on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 08:16 am:

Troll in Eagle Harbor... Yes,I'm Pam who stays with Lenore.... you can email me at{wpeace@triton.net...Who are you?
Al, thanks for fence info I wondered about that too...
Lori, Not Silly! I LOVE the Bridge and looking at it at different times of the day and night! I especially love those night shots and the Lights. I love reading about it so write on!
Charlie, Thanks for all you do and share... Love hearing about what I am actually looking at and trying to quess-figure out myself... Thanks for conformation and clarification!!!

By John from the prairie on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 08:28 am:

Glad to see they're rebuilding the White House.

It had burned when I was vacationing up that way this summer
and there was doubt that insurance would actually cover the true
cost of rebuilding.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 08:29 am:

Hmmmmm, I wonder if that safety harness is attached to a bungee cord?

By John from the prairie on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 08:31 am:

and which shafthouse is visible in that pic from the tower?

By DJB-MI. on Sunday, November 21, 2004 - 09:04 am:

I THINK THAT IS THE KINGSTON MINE NEAR KEARSARGE.

By Hooks, Illinois on Monday, November 22, 2004 - 07:15 pm:

What happened to the White House Restaurant - had dinner there once - it was a great experience. Hope the re-build is as good as the "original."
