Big Bash Day is finally here! Down in Ann Arbor the Michigan Tech Huskies will take on Grand Valley State in the HUGE UofM stadium known as the "Big House". During my 4 years at Michigan I spent many a Saturday afternoon with 100,000+ other fans watching the big boys bang heads. While the Wolverines are elswhere today, they left the keys to the stadium for their NCAA Division II brethren to duke it out.

Today's Pasty Cam from the prolific Donn de Yampert is the view from Quincy Hill on one of our recent fantastic-fall days, with the home of the Huskies poking up through the clouds. By the way, Donn recently took home some honors from the American Forest & Paper Association. Let's hope today the Huskies can bring home some honors of their own!

Go Lakers! When I was at Grand Valley it had 6000 students and the football team went without winning a football game that year. I took classes at Tech but my heart, 4 years and my parent's money are all at GVSU.

Digital cameras have probably resulted in more great photos in the past five years from people who otherwise only took snapshots. I bought a film burning Nikon N90 in 1999 that is probably worth about 25% of its originally value on Ebay due to the digital camera revolution.

I replaced it with a new digital job that was previously useful as a camera, but after doing an unintended "half" Eskimo roll in a kayak, it is now used as a paper weight and a fetch toy for my dogs. The lesson with digital cameras is that you have to be more careful about not getting them wet than with a film camera.

So all of you Lake Superior November storm enthusiasts, be careful careful about getting splashed by a photogenic wave, because your camera might go "Beep" for the last time. If your camera gets trashed, your memory card will still probably work, so at least there's an upside.

Great picture, as always, from Donn. I remember many a morning driving down from Calumet when I attended Tech to see a foggy valley from Quincy Hill. Also, GO TECH; both the football and hockey teams......

On a more personnal note, Dr. Nat's Father will be having heart surgury next week in Houston TX so I will be there with her parents as she can not be. I will have internet access while there so I will keep everyone informed as to what happens.

I was just reading posts in yesterday's Past-E-Mail, and the subject of earthquakes came up. Troll in Eagle Harbor had asked Audrey in San Jose, CA what an earthquake feels like. The first time I felt an earthquake here in Seattle was about 14 years ago. It was relatively mild. I had just come home, was standing in the living room taking my jacket off when I felt a low, slow rumble beneath my feet. Heard nothing... it was similar to when a huge truck rolls past bu with little or no noise. But this is was struck me: it reminded me of the blasting that occurred in the mines in the Copper Country in my youth. This would have been back in the late fifties, early sixties. I think one would feel the rumbling several times a day. It was just a normal, routine daily occurence. But that day, years later, here in Seattle, when I felt that earthquake, I stopped and just took the feeling in. I asked my husband, "Are we having an earthquake?" He nodded, and I said, "Cool." It reminded me of Ahmeek in my youth... and I got a huge smile on my face.

The game attendance announced at the 'Bash' was approximately 50,xxx (sorry, didn't catch the last digits).

I don't believe this is a new Div II record, but then again the prior record seems to have been set on what is known as 'Band Day' at U of M stadium. On 'Band Day' many high-school bands are invited in to watch the game. Don't know if that accounted for the 'record' attendance between Slippery Rock and Shippensburg.

Yeah, I'm ten years older than you. I grew up on Vivian Street, across the street from the post office. (The house isn't there anymore; was next door to Liikala's Hardware). Maybe you remember my aunt Helen who was postmistress at the P.O. for quite a long time.

Second Street in Location, huh? Hmmmm...let me think. I knew the Moilanen family on the corner of Second and School(?) Street, and the Sundbergs in the middle of that block.

I attended first, second, and third grades, and then sixth, seventh, and eighth grades at the school in Location. I bet that was torn down when you were little, late sixties or early seventies.

I'm sure you went to grade school in the new school built in Mohawk. Then you probably went to Calumet High School. Go Copper Kings!

When I was a kid living in Paavola the ground would shake, dishes and windows rattled when there was an 'air blast' from the mines. Sometimes they were very loud. My step-dad lived in Ahmeek, Joe Chopp. Any one remember the Chopp family?
Hei Kosk in Toronto, did you get to any of the FINNGRANDFEST 2005 stuff at the Agricola (?) church or the dance at the Latvian Hall? We played for a fundraiser for the FINNGRANDFEST on Oct. 23. Looong trip but we sure enjoyed it. 12 hours from Marquette, plus over an hour to get from Cornell to Marquette.

BAND DAY at the U. of M. is a thing of the past.I used to attend games there where they had crowds of 50-60,000 and bands and boy scouts were guests of the university. Now days with the prices and great attandance there is no more "give away" football games at the BIG HOUSE.

Maija- Just read the notes before & I think I'm a couple years young, my grandparents lived on onestreet past the post office in Ahmeek. the Waananen family. Remember going to Chopps with 5 or 10 cents & thought that we had the world be the tail. Remember the park & the tallest slide & it was scary to climb to the top. Maija in Seattle, I'm your neighbor. We've experienced four
quakes out here. The first one started with a very loud
rumble, and then the trembling started. Since it was a
shallow one, the UW seismologists said that indeed we'd
actually heard the earth shift. It was amazing. During
another, our youngest daughter called my husband to run
upstairs and check under the bed, as she was convinced a
monster was rattling it. During the big quake of Feb a
couple years ago, I was in a store (the glass department of
all places) and I thought the building was hit by a semi-
truck. The floor shimmied like jelly and I lost my balance.
Glass was everywhere and people ran out of the
building.Luckily, all I got was a cut on my foot.They are
exciting, to say the least!

p.s. speaking of mine blasts, my Houghton grandpa worked
for Atlas Powder Company in Ripley.

Yes I did attend Mohawk school - until the sixth grade - they then merged with Calumet schools and I went to Washington School for grades 7 and 8, then moved on to CHS...
