Big Bash Day is finally here! Down in Ann Arbor the Michigan Tech Huskies will take on Grand Valley State in the HUGE UofM stadium known as the "Big House". During my 4 years at Michigan I spent many a Saturday afternoon with 100,000+ other fans watching the big boys bang heads. While the Wolverines are elswhere today, they left the keys to the stadium for their NCAA Division II brethren to duke it out.

Today's Pasty Cam from the prolific Donn de Yampert is the view from Quincy Hill on one of our recent fantastic-fall days, with the home of the Huskies poking up through the clouds. By the way, Donn recently took home some honors from the American Forest & Paper Association. Let's hope today the Huskies can bring home some honors of their own!

By Drew, MN on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 09:25 am:

Charlie,
Do you know of any way we can listen to the game over the internet? Would be great to hear my old alma mater cruise to a perfect 10-0 season against the Lakers.

By Tom. Cal. Mi. on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 09:30 am:

Check out the yooperalumni.com site. I see a lot of people that I have forgot about.

If you haven't checked out Donn's galleries, set aside half an hour for a wonderful tour of the Yoop -- he's awesome! Oh, and GO YOU TECH HUSKIES!

Amazing Photo!

By exyooper, CO on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 11:01 am:

Go Lakers! When I was at Grand Valley it had 6000 students and the football team went without winning a football game that year. I took classes at Tech but my heart, 4 years and my parent's money are all at GVSU.

By maijaMI on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 11:16 am:

wonderful!

By BJ, lower peninsula on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 11:23 am:

Looks like a slice of heaven in the UP -
fantastic!

By Tim, Saint Clair Shores, MI on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 11:36 am:

Digital cameras have probably resulted in more great photos in the past five years from people who otherwise only took snapshots. I bought a film burning Nikon N90 in 1999 that is probably worth about 25% of its originally value on Ebay due to the digital camera revolution.

I replaced it with a new digital job that was previously useful as a camera, but after doing an unintended "half" Eskimo roll in a kayak, it is now used as a paper weight and a fetch toy for my dogs. The lesson with digital cameras is that you have to be more careful about not getting them wet than with a film camera.

So all of you Lake Superior November storm enthusiasts, be careful careful about getting splashed by a photogenic wave, because your camera might go "Beep" for the last time. If your camera gets trashed, your memory card will still probably work, so at least there's an upside.

By Capt. Paul in Nevada on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 11:45 am:

Morning from Nevada

Great picture, as always, from Donn. I remember many a morning driving down from Calumet when I attended Tech to see a foggy valley from Quincy Hill. Also, GO TECH; both the football and hockey teams......

On a more personnal note, Dr. Nat's Father will be having heart surgury next week in Houston TX so I will be there with her parents as she can not be. I will have internet access while there so I will keep everyone informed as to what happens.

Take care, and have a great Saturday everyone ;-)

By Carl, Ohio on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 12:46 pm:

Photo is beautiful. In fact, nearly all the photos on this site are like a mini-vacation. Thanks to all those who provide them. Carl

It's from the Mt St Helen Web cam

By Ruspakka, Husky in Houston . . .for now on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 01:38 pm:

If anyone's listening to the game on the radio (93.5 FM) and a computer happens to be handy i'd be much obliged to get any updates possible. I haven't found anywhere you can listen to the game over the internet nor do they have any sufficient "Real-Time" updates anywhere on the web.

Thanks!! :)

I have forgotten from last year, how to order the 2005 calender. Could some one remind me? I want just the calender and to write a check. Thanks. Fabulous photo, Don. You sure earned the awards!

You can order your 2005 Calendar here: Pasty Cam Calendar - In Memory of Dan Urbanski. Oh, what the heck, you might as well order some U.P. Pasties at the same time and get the calendar at no additional shipping cost! You can eat your pasty, while looking at the beautiful U.P. scenes...does it get any better than this?! :->

By Drew, MN on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 03:13 pm:

The clouds are like a feather bed. You could just sink in it and slumber.
Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat. I recently had heart surgery, and with the miracles in medicine, your Dad should be fine. Take care.

By kosk in Toronto on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 05:43 pm:

I tried to order the 2005 calendar from
Pasty.com the other night. I don't know if I
was successful. I didn't receive an e-mail and
I had a message about not having a zip code
filled in. I had left a message in the
appropriate space explaining that Canada
uses postal codes (e.g. M6P 1K8) instead of
zip codes. Will I get my calendars (I ordered
one for my family and one for my dad for
Christmas)? I sure would like to receive them.

The proper department will be notified to check out your order. In the meantime, please send an email to
orders@pasty.com, explaining the same. We'll make sure you get your calendars!

By Drew, MN on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 06:23 pm:

Well, thanks for the final score but do we know if the D2 attendance record was broken? Just curious. Thanks.

By Helen on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 06:49 pm:

Donn,
That has to be one of the most magnificent pictures that you have ever taken. I am glad to see your picture here again.
Keep up the great work.
Helen

By Rich, Midland, MI on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 06:53 pm:

The GLIAC box stats for the game indicate that attendance was suspected to be the second largest in NCAA-II history....

Fantastic picture, Donn! You were certainly in the right spot at the right time.

By Maija in Seattle on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 07:12 pm:

I was just reading posts in yesterday's Past-E-Mail, and the subject of earthquakes came up. Troll in Eagle Harbor had asked Audrey in San Jose, CA what an earthquake feels like. The first time I felt an earthquake here in Seattle was about 14 years ago. It was relatively mild. I had just come home, was standing in the living room taking my jacket off when I felt a low, slow rumble beneath my feet. Heard nothing... it was similar to when a huge truck rolls past bu with little or no noise. But this is was struck me: it reminded me of the blasting that occurred in the mines in the Copper Country in my youth. This would have been back in the late fifties, early sixties. I think one would feel the rumbling several times a day. It was just a normal, routine daily occurence. But that day, years later, here in Seattle, when I felt that earthquake, I stopped and just took the feeling in. I asked my husband, "Are we having an earthquake?" He nodded, and I said, "Cool." It reminded me of Ahmeek in my youth... and I got a huge smile on my face.

By Jon, Ypsilanti on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 07:28 pm:

Maija in Seattle,

So you grew up in Ahmeek?? So did I - I really don't remember the mines (born in 63). I am probably younger than you, but it is always nice to make contact with someone from the hometown - don't you agree?

I lived on Second St in Location - what about you?

I look forward to hearing from you..

Later,
Jon

By Janet, MA on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 07:40 pm:

Awesome! Orange is my favorite color, so this totally made my day! :D

By John, Cereal City, MI on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 08:44 pm:

The game attendance announced at the 'Bash' was approximately 50,xxx (sorry, didn't catch the last digits).

I don't believe this is a new Div II record, but then again the prior record seems to have been set on what is known as 'Band Day' at U of M stadium. On 'Band Day' many high-school bands are invited in to watch the game. Don't know if that accounted for the 'record' attendance between Slippery Rock and Shippensburg.

By Maija in Seattle on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 08:50 pm:

Hi Jon in Ypsilanti,

Yeah, I'm ten years older than you. I grew up on Vivian Street, across the street from the post office. (The house isn't there anymore; was next door to Liikala's Hardware). Maybe you remember my aunt Helen who was postmistress at the P.O. for quite a long time.

Second Street in Location, huh? Hmmmm...let me think. I knew the Moilanen family on the corner of Second and School(?) Street, and the Sundbergs in the middle of that block.

I attended first, second, and third grades, and then sixth, seventh, and eighth grades at the school in Location. I bet that was torn down when you were little, late sixties or early seventies.

I'm sure you went to grade school in the new school built in Mohawk. Then you probably went to Calumet High School. Go Copper Kings!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 09:16 pm:

When I was a kid living in Paavola the ground would shake, dishes and windows rattled when there was an 'air blast' from the mines. Sometimes they were very loud. My step-dad lived in Ahmeek, Joe Chopp. Any one remember the Chopp family?
Hei Kosk in Toronto, did you get to any of the FINNGRANDFEST 2005 stuff at the Agricola (?) church or the dance at the Latvian Hall? We played for a fundraiser for the FINNGRANDFEST on Oct. 23. Looong trip but we sure enjoyed it. 12 hours from Marquette, plus over an hour to get from Cornell to Marquette.

By Liz, Idaho on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 09:25 pm:

Beautiful picture,Sir. Gosh, just what I need after a long day of volunteer working! Thanks for sharing one of your many talent.

By R Somero CA on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 09:31 pm:

Maija in Seattle-I sit here reading your posts and talking to my wife Beth Moilanen. Sure is a small world.
Looks like Donn's picture is taken from the Lookout, true?

By ED/MI on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 11:06 pm:

BAND DAY at the U. of M. is a thing of the past.I used to attend games there where they had crowds of 50-60,000 and bands and boy scouts were guests of the university. Now days with the prices and great attandance there is no more "give away" football games at the BIG HOUSE.

By Candy, CA on Saturday, November 6, 2004 - 11:18 pm:

Hey, Maija in Seattle, I'm reading your posts from just north of Sacramento, remembering your smile and twinkling eyes! Lots of fun at CHS with you.

By ace,tx on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 12:06 am:

Maija- Just read the notes before & I think I'm a couple years young, my grandparents lived on onestreet past the post office in Ahmeek. the Waananen family. Remember going to Chopps with 5 or 10 cents & thought that we had the world be the tail. Remember the park & the tallest slide & it was scary to climb to the top. Thank You for bringing back the good memories & good times from Ahmeek. Good Nite

By Trish, WA on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 01:32 am:

Maija in Seattle, I'm your neighbor. We've experienced four
quakes out here. The first one started with a very loud
rumble, and then the trembling started. Since it was a
shallow one, the UW seismologists said that indeed we'd
actually heard the earth shift. It was amazing. During
another, our youngest daughter called my husband to run
upstairs and check under the bed, as she was convinced a
monster was rattling it. During the big quake of Feb a
couple years ago, I was in a store (the glass department of
all places) and I thought the building was hit by a semi-
truck. The floor shimmied like jelly and I lost my balance.
Glass was everywhere and people ran out of the
building.Luckily, all I got was a cut on my foot. They are
exciting, to say the least!

By Trish, WA on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 01:37 am:

p.s. speaking of mine blasts, my Houghton grandpa worked
for Atlas Powder Company in Ripley.

By Candy, CA on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 05:50 pm:

Ace, Maija was known by her "real" name in high school: Mary Lynn

By Jon, Ypsilanti on Sunday, November 7, 2004 - 07:08 pm:

Maija in Seattle,

I know all the people you mentioned - Moilanens and Sundbergs, as a matter of fact the Sundberg's are cousins of mine.

You probably knew my uncle Frank Vairus who lived on Bollman street - then again there are probably not many people who did not know him....

I kind of remember the school in Location - I remember when they tore it down (or was it used for fire fighting practice??)

Yes I did attend Mohawk school - until the sixth grade - they then merged with Calumet schools and I went to Washington School for grades 7 and 8, then moved on to CHS...

Well take care,
Jon
