Ahh... some leaves at rest after numerous months of shading us from the summer sun. These shots from Lyn Rayrat, show specimens of color still vibrant and supple from their recent tumble to the ground. Up North here, you just need to wait a week or so and they'll dry out to the point of making the crunch we all love to hear when you rustle through the leaves for a walk. It's also just about time to make a heap of them, then take a running start and jump into the bed of foliage to cushion your landing! Caution: Please only try this if you're young at heart and able bodied!

Along with the new month comes our new What'sUP feature, for comments not necessarily relative to the picture of the day. If these lovely photos stir some pleasant memories of the U.P., please share them with us on this page. If you have any other announcements, conversation, etc., feel free to use the other flexible forum to tell us What'sUP?

Good morning from Mishawaka IN.

Good morning to you, NKR. Your moderators encourage you to comment on the picture of the day on this page, and if it's just to say hello, see you in the
What'sUP forum :o)

By yooper at college, ND on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:26 am:

its 5:24 here in central time so technically i should be the early bird :)

FYI, from now on the 'early bird' will be recognized over in the What'sUP room. Under the new format, this 'Cam Notes' page is devoted to comments specifically about today's picture(s). By the way, Lyn's Guest Gallery album makes a great slide show.

By yooperwannabe/richmond mi on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:26 am:

Great picture. Have a great week to all!

Good morning. Nice pictures!

By Joe , Mi on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:41 am:

Good Morning from Brighton

A sad day I mulched the last of the on going leaves this weekend. Now the trees are bare and I know what is next !!!!! .

By Frances S. Georgia on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:11 am:

Good Morning from South Georgia,
I have enjoyed your beautiful fall colors, thanks for sharing them.

By danbury on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:18 am:

A calm picture in exciting times - great job. I could stand for hours on a lake or on a bridge over a slow river, watching leaves drift by.

By Bob on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:35 am:

It's amazing how stuff you see every day and don't
even think about suddenly gets snapped as a picture
thats incredible.

Thats the one thing I've enjoyed the most about my digital camera is the ability to just snap away.

Because I'm not worried about developing costs, some of the simplest things suddenly jump out as great pictures

By Steve in VA on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:44 am:

Here in Virginia, we're just starting the leaf cleanup. I really miss the reds and true golds in the trees. All we have here are yellows and browns.

By maijaMI on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:51 am:

In south east lower MI it was pretty intersting how the leaves hung on and kept their color, then BAM right at haloween they faded and almost all dropped. It must have been the time change. ;-) Or were they scared by the beggars? ;-)

By Rick Mayer on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:01 am:

Congratulations Lyn on having your pictures chosen for today! As I commented in your gallery, I think the shot of the leaves on the wood is very creative. It's a great perspective shot. I also like how the bright leaf in the forground is in focus (very important) and how the leafs in the background fall out of focus. Well executed!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:10 am:

Lyn, you always have wonderful pictures and a great eye! And I haven't even been to your Gallery lately! I'll do that later when I have a break. First thing in my classroom every morning I go to Pasty Cam and play my James Galway At the Movies CD. Flute goes well with Keweenaw!

By Leslie at the Northern Lights Lodge - Cadillac on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:18 am:

Good Morning everyone,
We just returned from a wonderful long weekend at "camp" in the Yoop... despite the rain; we were outside enjoying the countryside, the last of the color and the birds and wildlife!

By lk, c.c. on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:20 am:

Neat perspective in both pictures. I agree, Lyn has wonderful pictures.

By UP dreamer stuck in NJ on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:23 am:

I am always amazed at what incredible photographers contribute to Pasty Cam. Lyn, your whole album is gorgeous! I have so much fun checking out the photo gallery.

By ShawnR, GR MI on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:26 am:

Lyn - what gorgeous shots! Thanks for sharing with all of us.

By Therese from just below the bridge on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:45 am:

Beautiful pictures! Here near Harbor Springs the trees were stripped by this weekend's strong winds. Unfortunately it mostly happened at night so I wasnt outside during the leaffall. I love November, this in-between time, filled with the expectancy of the first snow.

By moi on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:50 am:

Beautiful close-ups!
When you jump in the leaf piles, beware the earwigs!

By Lori, WI on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 09:18 am:

Lyn just enjoyed your wonderful slide show. What gorgeous pictures! You might even make me become a cat person!! Beautiful!

By Sarah, Central WI on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 09:34 am:

Such beautiful pictures to brighten my dreary day! Thank you!

By DuneRat, Norton Shores on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 09:39 am:

Lyn --

Awesome shots! Down here on the Lake Michigan shore it blew like a wild thing all day Saturday. Kids playing soccer couldn't see the ball half the time in the carpet of leaves streaming across the field. The wire fence on the dune filled with leaves so it looked like a scintillating brown wall. Seemed like half the lake was coming ashore, big surf breaking on the fourth sand reef out from shore, then coming in over the inner reefs and running up and down the littoral slope like a river running sideways. Quite a different scene than the placid view in the photos.

By Sue, Calumet on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 09:41 am:

Didn't Hobbes warn Calvin about slugs in the leaf piles? When Calvin was in mid-trajectory, I believe.

By Mel, MI on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 10:59 am:

Good morning from Dearborn.

I officially declare fall over down here. All of the leaves have fallen. It was so beautiful. The leaves were so many different colors.

By CAL, Oshkosh WI on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:12 am:

Your whole slideshow was Absolutely gorgeous, Lyn. Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures!

By Jack in CT on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:13 am:

Autumn, my favorite season. These beautiful pictures say so much.
The leaves out here were really colorful and great to look at on the trees. Now with them all on the ground it's like there are lights shining up on the trees from below and it gives a very different perspective when walking through the woods.

By Dr. Nat in Nevada on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:13 am:

Good morning everyone!
Here in Nevada we just had a long weekend in celebration of Nevada Day (the day we were admitted into the Union). Long weekends are nice, but there's always a pile of work waiting when I get back. Sooooo, do I jump right into work? Of course not, my first priority is to check the pastycam. I can always count on a beautiful photo to brighten my morning.

By Dave - Colorado on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:31 am:

Great Photos Lyn! You have so many great shots in your gallery too! This morning we awoke to about seven inches of wet heavy snow on the ground... I had to brush the snow off the apple trees to keep them from breaking. Winter is coming... Wahoo!

By Trish, WA on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:35 am:

The photos are beautiful! The lower photo reminds me of a
rustic picnic table at
a wayside park, laid with the finest of Nature's linens, red-
hued maple leaves... I can imagine a hardy group of souls
out on a fall drive can hop out of their car to enjoy their
lunch of pasties, maybe one of the last of the season before
the snow flies...
Good morning from western Washington where there is
snow on the foothils and mountaintops:)

By Roy TN on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:45 am:

I have a question concerning the bright red/orange leaves that you have in the Keweenaw. I know that they are from Maples but are they the "Hard" maple or the "Soft" maple? If someone could tell me it would be appreciated.

By shelly/Yankee in Texas on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 12:21 pm:

Its Fall here in Houston as well. We get the treat of raking pine needles out of our grass. Between the pokey needles and the fire ants, no-one is jumping in the piles at all!! :)

Its also raining alot and I can't help wishing it was cold enough to turn into lots and lots of snow!!

Have a great day, and by the way, I like the "What's UP" site. At first I felt a little bummed, like we were gonna be disconnected from one another, cuz lets face it, you can only say so much about a leaf.

By H. Donn de Yampert, PT, DPT. on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 12:51 pm:

I want to commend Ms. Rayrat for some very good photography. Congratulations...

By Liz, Idaho on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 12:53 pm:

Was at Agate Beach in Stanton Township on Thursday and saw pictures like the above....so very interesting to see leaf patterns when they fall. A peek of the sun shown on the silver slide with leaves clumped on it. Wanted so bad to slide through them!
It remains a picture in my mind as does the little white tail also enjoying the Park that day. Thanks, Lyn for your photo talents.

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 12:57 pm:

Great shots today! I especially like the perspective of the second picture. Very creative!

Shelly, your last comment was very amusing!!

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 01:32 pm:

Great texture in both as well.

By Marg, Houghton, MI on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:19 pm:

Dr. Nat, you missed a great Hockey game Friday night, and didn't miss much on Saturday. But Collin scored a beautiful goal Friday. I am getting ready for the Bash at the Big House this weekend. Give my best to Paul.

By The Dam Guy, Parasite Creek on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:35 pm:

You done good...but your comments were moved to the VOTE section under our new What's UP conversations. :->

By Frank,,,,,Milw..... on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:23 pm:

Nice leaves. Got mine all raked.

Hey dam guy, I think you did great!!!!

By Dr. Nat in Nevada on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:27 pm:

Marg,
I've been listening to the hockey games on the internet. I do miss watching the boys! Have fun at the Big House! I wish I was going with you.

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:56 pm:

I love the pictures today. Especially the leaves in the water. I wish thats where the leaves in my yard were.

By MTU Football on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:00 pm:

Go Huskies !!!

By Therese from Harbor Springs, MI on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:28 pm:

Roy in Tennessee: We have mostly hardrock maples in the North or, as they are known regionally, sugar maples. They are the trees tapped to make maple syrup in March. Sugar maples make good firewood.

There are also red maples, which have intensley dark red leaves that turn early, and striped maples that I think are yellow. The 'soft' silver maples are mostly in the southern part of the lower peninsula; they turn sometimes red but mostly a pure gold.

By elf, troy, mi on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:50 pm:

The opportunity to write our soldiers in Iraq was given to my son's AP American History class last week. After enjoying the wonderful cascade of color just like the ones in today's pics, we collected a variety of leaves, pressed them between waxed paper, to accompany the letters. Hopefully they will make it through the mail, enabling those so far from home to enjoy some of our Michigan beauty.

By Rick Mayer on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:39 pm:

What's in a leaf?

It appears that those that came to this page only to chat just see leaves. However, those that came here for the photography see much more. These are not just leaves! They are the artistic vision of a contributing photographer to this site, and Lyn deserves all the 'KIND' words above.

As a newer contibuting photographer to this site, I appreciate the decision by Pasty Central to give those of us who appreciate photography a place to share, view, and comment on our work without being inundated with the miscellaeous and often monotonous commentary.

Great Pictures Lyn!

By vet's daughter on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:45 pm:

Elf in Troy, MI, what a nice idea that the high school kids
are sending a bit of the UP fall color to the men and
women who serve our country in Iraq. Bet they'll make
their way to more than a few tents' walls as a constant
reminder of a place they love that's far away.

There's no place like home.

By Capt. Paul in Nevada on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:56 pm:

Great close-up pictures Lyn!! I do some close-up photography as well, though mostly minerals and geology pictures. What kind of equipment did you use for those pictures (camera, lens, film, etc...)?? Eventually, I would like to post some of my pictures on the Pasty site. Not only scenic pictures of the area, but possibly some minerals and other historic mining items of the Keweenaw as well; what do you all think??

I share in Dr. Nat's thoughts about missing Tech Hockey games and especially missing "The Bash". What a bummer but hey, at least we enjoyed the one game we did get to see in person October 8th.

Good day to all :-)

By Thank you so much! on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:00 pm:

This new format is wonderful. It is working beautifully. I don't believe it will in any way hurt the site, rather it'll add to its integrity. All of Lyn's fall pictures are fabulous. My favorites are the pictures of the forest floor covered in golden glory.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:00 pm:

I love "smaller" item pictures such as these. Don't get me wrong, I love the scenic because I miss the UP so much. But the art that God reveals in the small ones are very much appreciated. Our leaves are still up but the Squaw Winter today will change that.

By Lyn Rayrat on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:07 pm:

I would like to thank everyone for the compliments on my photos. Have a great evening!

Capt. Paul, Most of my photos are taken with a digital Olympus c3020.

By Capt. Paul in Nevada on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:42 pm:

Thanks Lyn.

I guess I'm old fashioned; I shoot with a Nikon SLR and an array of lenses ;-).

By Lowell MO. on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:40 pm:

Have always enjoyed the pictures both old and new from the U.P. I for one am glad to see that all the non-related stuff was moved to another place. Keep up the good work and keep all the pictures coming. This way all of the people from up there that live elsewhere can see what is going on and what it looks like. By the way liked the Pictures today also.

By Jim, Tx. on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 09:59 pm:

The Dam Guy,
Nice try in keeping comments with the picture of the day! Had me rolling in the leaves laughing.
Great pictures Lyn! Sure do miss the distinct changes of the seasons here in Texas. Some days I actually have to take a few seconds to remember what time of year it is. Never had that problem back Home in the U.P. Someday Home is where I'll be again & then it will probably be old age for my not remembering.

By maijaMI on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 07:57 am:

Capt Paul: I for one would love to see your pictures of minerals and mining equipment. My daughter went to Tech's summer youth program one year for field minerology. She taught me a great deal after her experience.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 - 04:07 pm:

Maple leaves are 1 of my favourites. Nice pic.
