Ahh... some leaves at rest after numerous months of shading us from the summer sun. These shots from Lyn Rayrat, show specimens of color still vibrant and supple from their recent tumble to the ground. Up North here, you just need to wait a week or so and they'll dry out to the point of making the crunch we all love to hear when you rustle through the leaves for a walk. It's also just about time to make a heap of them, then take a running start and jump into the bed of foliage to cushion your landing! Caution: Please only try this if you're young at heart and able bodied!
Along with the new month comes our new What'sUP feature, for comments not necessarily relative to the picture of the day. If these lovely photos stir some pleasant memories of the U.P., please share them with us on this page. If you have any other announcements, conversation, etc., feel free to use the other flexible forum to tell us

In south east lower MI it was pretty intersting how the leaves hung on and kept their color, then BAM right at haloween they faded and almost all dropped. It must have been the time change. ;-) Or were they scared by the beggars? ;-)

Autumn, my favorite season. These beautiful pictures say so much. The leaves out here were really colorful and great to look at on the trees. Now with them all on the ground it's like there are lights shining up on the trees from below and it gives a very different perspective when walking through the woods.

Good morning everyone! Here in Nevada we just had a long weekend in celebration of Nevada Day (the day we were admitted into the Union). Long weekends are nice, but there's always a pile of work waiting when I get back. Sooooo, do I jump right into work? Of course not, my first priority is to check the pastycam. I can always count on a beautiful photo to brighten my morning.

I have a question concerning the bright red/orange leaves that you have in the Keweenaw. I know that they are from Maples but are they the "Hard" maple or the "Soft" maple? If someone could tell me it would be appreciated.

Dr. Nat, you missed a great Hockey game Friday night, and didn't miss much on Saturday. But Collin scored a beautiful goal Friday. I am getting ready for the Bash at the Big House this weekend. Give my best to Paul.

Great close-up pictures Lyn!! I do some close-up photography as well, though mostly minerals and geology pictures. What kind of equipment did you use for those pictures (camera, lens, film, etc...)?? Eventually, I would like to post some of my pictures on the Pasty site. Not only scenic pictures of the area, but possibly some minerals and other historic mining items of the Keweenaw as well; what do you all think??
I share in Dr. Nat's thoughts about missing Tech Hockey games and especially missing "The Bash". What a bummer but hey, at least we enjoyed the one game we did get to see in person October 8th.
I love "smaller" item pictures such as these. Don't get me wrong, I love the scenic because I miss the UP so much. But the art that God reveals in the small ones are very much appreciated. Our leaves are still up but the Squaw Winter today will change that.

I guess I'm old fashioned; I shoot with a Nikon SLR and an array of lenses ;-).

Have always enjoyed the pictures both old and new from the U.P. I for one am glad to see that all the non-related stuff was moved to another place. Keep up the good work and keep all the pictures coming. This way all of the people from up there that live elsewhere can see what is going on and what it looks like. By the way liked the Pictures today also.

Capt Paul: I for one would love to see your pictures of minerals and mining equipment. My daughter went to Tech's summer youth program one year for field minerology. She taught me a great deal after her experience.
