Suggestions for the Pasty folks

Past-E-Mail: Cam Notes - 2004: October: Oct 20-04: Suggestions for the Pasty folks
Pasty Central is one of the oldest "daily picture" sites on the Web, and certainly one of the oldest dedicated to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Comments in the form of "Past-E-Mail" or "Cam Notes" have been around for most of those years, as a resource for interaction about the daily pictures and relevant topics.

Statistically, only a fraction of a percent of those who view this site actually post comments. The vast majority of browsers visit the picture of the day, scan the comments, and move on to related links, sponsors' pages, etc. We occasionally receive email or calls when off-topic or controversial subjects effect this pleasant daily experience, and occasionally we move such conversation to a sub-page (like this one).

Our desire is to provide a positive daily contact with the U.P. for people of all ages. We strive to maintain a "kid-friendly" atmosphere as we present photos which have been contributed by so many who share the same interest and love for the Upper Peninsula.

Thanks for stopping by Pasty Central!

Yes, that is one of the bones I have to pick with this site from time to time. It is supposed to be a discussion page of a sort, and when something as simple as "gas prices" is mentioned, they censor what a lot of people would like to discuss or bring to the attention of others across the country. As mundane a topic as it is, I find it of interest to see what other people are paying in different. Sometimes censorship can be taken too far..... could just be a control issue though....that's why I no longer post my pictures in their gallery..

By maijaMI on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 06:07 pm:

Dave, Laurium: I wish you would!

By maijaMI on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 06:12 pm:

I would like to support the pasty cam people. I don't see the problem with moving certain discussions to other pages. They are easily accessible for those interested. I feel they have a hard job, and who's to say what should be censored or moved? I might like all the boring sports comments moved, but others get into sports, so let 'um rip! It must be a massive job to run this site, and there are countless numbers of us who love it.

By Name removed? on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 06:39 pm:

I agree that there is too much censorship on this site. And my gerbil thinks so too!

By YoopFan on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 06:45 pm:

Dave-
I for one would rather go to another page to see inane comments on gas prices, etc. It's not too hard to click on the link. I think the site administration here is excellent, and usually appropriate. Just my two cents...

By bek, fond du lac on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 06:51 pm:

I disagree about the censorship.
There's only so much I can read about gerbils, gas prices, religion or politics before it begins to get old. Some things just don't have the same impact or humor the 20th time it appears.
I like discussions and debates, they keep your mind sharp. But there are appropriate times and places for certain subjects and I think it's a great idea to post a seperate page for those interested.

By separate site supporter only for mostly sensible discussions on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 07:23 pm:

Right on, bek!

By FYI on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 07:32 pm:

Dave you are not being censored. If you want to discuss gas prices go to the seperate page and do it, nobody's stopping you. Sounds a little bit like you're pouting to me. Your not hurting anybody but yourself by not sharing your pictures. Sounds a little bit selfish to me. If they don't play the game your way your're going to take your bat and go home? That'll teach em, they can't play with your new bat anymore.

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 07:38 pm:

I agree with bek. This is a great site!

By camwatcher on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 07:46 pm:

Many sites have forums such as this for conversation. They differ. Some heavily censored, some monitored and some are like the wild west. You have to pick the one that is right for you. It really is impossible to please all the people - all the time. Some days even a mention of the weather is something that gets bumped to off-subject. Like real life...you have to take the good with the bad.

By Dave, Laurium on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 07:48 pm:

FYI... sorry, but I am not pouting and certainly not hurting myself. And Yes, you are right, they are 'MY' pictures, and if I keep them posted here, they can actually become their pictures by the agreement to allow them to use our pics if they desire. If that is selfish, so be it, there was a lot of enjoyment and hard work put into getting some of my shots. I will be sharing them again in the future, but under a different format for all to enjoy if they like. Hope you will become a visitor and enjoy them.

By camwatcher on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 07:57 pm:

I gotta say that I agree with you pretty much Dave. I " Play well with others", but I certainly have my own mind too. I can't imagine being in 100% agreement all the time. I don't consider this pouting either.

By well hows about.. on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 08:59 pm:

Well maybe an "opt out" for permission to use pictures on the Pastycam section is an idea they could look at..
I cannot imagine most people mind their pics being hilighted by the pasty power people.

By John Canton Mi on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 09:29 pm:

Have to add my two cents. Do not like to see politics on ths sight. However, some posts,
like the one last night sayiny vote for Bush
or forget about logging or hunting, seem to get in while retorts do not. I quit sending
opposing views because they were deleted.
Now I dont send them because I dont want to prolong the unwanted,by many, discussion
on this otherwise great site. Thank you.

By Protowhatever, Calumet, MI on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 10:14 pm:

Dave, Laurium:
I agree with you about the control issue. I was amused for a
little bit with the gerbil comments, but I did find myself scanning
over them in their last days. Did I think it was fair to completely
delete them from the posts? No. Deleting them really bugged
me. They were harmless comments and some people really
enjoyed it. I wanted to write about my thoughts about their
deletion, but I figured why bother. They'd probably get deleted.
Why bother now? Well, to give you my support. And you better
keep us posted on where we can find your pics in the future :)

Gerbil!!!! Oh how I miss my buddy :)

By Julie S., Kiel, WI on Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 01:34 am:

Ya know, I come to visit this site because I get homesick for my hometown of Calumet. I like to hear about the things going on up there and it really doesn't bother me what they remove or "censor". It is their site and they should do whatever it is that they do. Whoever "they" are. It is a wonderful site and I just wanted to put in my two cents. Thanks!

By anon/milw on Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 08:21 am:

I used to post almost daily, but stopped because of the censorship issue. One day, I merely asked that people respect each other, as the discussion was getting heated. I said this as nicely as I could, used no profanity in any way and then was deleted. I believe others have stopped posting as well. Now I merely surf, and have decided that nothing will get me to post again, except for this final message.

By danbury on Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 08:30 am:

Reading John Canton Mi, indeed, that's what I do not get, too: Fine by me that politics and other "potentially offensive" discussions and statements, getting out of hand, are removed occasionally. There's an end to everything. But consequently all statements in that direction should be removed. Like that "Vote for Bush" (though it might have been removed after a while) or some (not all, by all means!!) comments about logging, hunting and stuff like that.

Clarification on "(though it might have been removed after a while)" above - we here at pasty.com cannot be reading the comments posted every minute of the day, so therefore some comments seem to go unnoticed for awhile, but we do remove or move them when the next check is done, in order to keep this a pleasant experience for ALL visitors.

By Susan, Fl on Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 09:34 am:

I agree with Julie S. I enjoy the pictures because I am homesick and they brighten my day. I come to this site to relax. I no longer read below the first few comments because "some" seem to have their own agenda. I like to read the personal stories of what life is like up there now and long ago. If I want to chat about politics, etc. I can go to a different site.

By The wonderer on Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 12:53 pm:

I'm wondering how many comments were edited out of this suggestions page.

Wonder no longer...comments were moved to this page, not removed! 8-)

By camwatcher on Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 03:15 pm:

Dave, Laurium ....Have you seen the discussion pages on http://www.keweenawnow.com/discussions/2.aspx

By danbury on Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 04:24 pm:

No offense intended - thought you would have.
It usually is, on the picture as well as the discussion pages.

In general, how boring would life be if we all agreed on everything? We'd still be sitting in them caves!

Pasty.com rules!

Dave-Laurium: I have had posts deleted and never took it personally. You shouldn't be angry. Share your photos among the Pasty crowd. We do enjoy them!
