Charlie H., out west for the weekend on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 09:15 am:

Toivo is on assignment this weekend, chasing the Pro Rally up in the Keweenaw. He forwarded this Saturday Pasty Cam choice - Aladino Mandoli's godson Stevie checking out the Midway Location trestle, somewhere between Marquette and Negaunee. This week there were still a few leaves hanging on tight in pockets around the U.P.

I see by the webcams it's a soggy morning in the Copper Country. Edie and I are visiting Becky and Bryan out in Salt Lake City, on a brief vacation. The live cams sure makes it nice to stay in touch with home while we are away, and of course we can dial-in to the nationwide service with a local phone call, just about anywhere.

For local Pasty.NET users in the Keweenaw, I understand last night our offices in Calumet received some lightning damage, knocking both the dial-in and wireless services "off-the-air" for about an hour. The lightning moved on up the Peninsula, where it appears to have affected the broadband links to Gay, LacLaBelle, Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor. Our repair crew is on the way - and they may get to catch a little of the Pro Rally themselves.

Aladino - Just checked out your album. Great pictures! Forcast calling for rain here today. Maybe it will miss us. Have a good weekend everyone.

Charlie and family,
Welcome to my neck of the woods. Enjoy! I will be in Calumet on Wednesday after an annual meeting in MN. Now I'm off to the university's HomeComing parade. Get to toss candy and make sure our young float rollerbladers don't pelt the folks too hard. Of course its raining/snowing but since it is the Pocatello Ski Association float we are fine in the elements.
Picture is cool. I'd be crawling back to terra firma!

Cool ship going thru the Portage -- waiting for the bridge to lift!

By Candy, CA on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 10:32 am:

Charlie, how often does the bridge cam refresh? Tried to catch the ship going under the bridge, but only caught the tail end after it had already gone through. Seems like it's 15 minutes. Is that right?

By TrackSurvivor on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 10:44 am:

I grew up playing on train tracks that ran across the street from our house. This picture looked like the most natural thing in the world to me. We spent hours "bombing" leaves floating down the river with little rocks. 1960's Nintendo ...

By Jack, K Falls Oregon on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 11:02 am:

It's been a long time, but the picture doesn't do justice to how high that tressel is. Being able to look between the railroad ties made walking a chalenge. Did you notice the little escape platforms? Sure am glad that I never had to use one!

Go Cats!

So many good pictures of the Copper Country which brings many fond memories. Reminded me of the falls bridge just outside of Lake Linden. Probably not there anymore. Anyway keep up the good work.

Have you seen Nate Tormala's Afghanistan photos? Here is the path to his gallery:

He's asking for emails and I'm sure he'd appreciate a friendly hello.

The DNR I think, built a new bridge for snow mobiles over Hungarian Falls valley this year on the old Copper Range right of way. Heres a picture:
hungarian falls bridge.jpg

By Gordy, IL on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 12:48 pm:

Regarding the new bridge over Hungarian Falls, the trees have so overgrown the area, you can't see anything. I meant to post this with the photo, but was so worried about posting the picture, I forgot to add this. The bridge is meant to last. They used the original concrete piers that supported the railroad bridge, little concrete patching and new tops. I am sure it cost a nice sum.

To Robert C. Wetton, thank you for sharing the pics of the steamer passing under the Lift Bridge today. I really enjoyed seeing that...

By Down State Dave on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 02:16 pm:

Regarding the ship, Joseph H. Frantz -- she was originally built in 1924. Quite a history. Go to www.boatnerd.com for more info. Look in the photo gallery

Is the Pro Rally the same as what use to be called the POR?

By EM on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 04:32 pm:

Thanks RC for sharing your pictures of the freighter and for letting us know they were in your album for those interested instead of imposing them on everyone who may not be interested.
Also Dino Mandoli would not jeopardize his godsons life.
To not bubble wrapped- It's good to dare to color outside the lines once in awhile.

we used to go underneath the rr bridge when the train passed over a wee bit noisy ect.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 06:10 pm:

I like today's picture. A young boy caught up in his own imagination and dreams. To me, life itself is a risk if we don't use caution, to adults as well as children. On another subject, it really is cold here in San Jose today, I woke up this morning and my teeth were chattering. (Course, I sleep with the windows wide open)

By Jo Ann, Hancock on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 06:37 pm:

James - Il. Yes the pro rally is the same as PRO..more cars less accidents i think but cool anyways. This year the wind was so bad the safety crew had to cut out trees that had fallen during the night..one of the crew said they burnt up 3 chain saws cutting them up...

By James - Il on Saturday, October 23, 2004 - 08:10 pm:

Thanks Jo Ann in Hancock. I use POR as my motto when my disability starts to get the best of me. I use to support Jon from the Libiary Bar when he raced in it.
