Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 06:01 am:

Pat Siler made her way to the top of Mount Houghton, which is about 2 1/2 miles north of the Bete Grise irons that you can see jutting out into Lake Superior in this photo. Talk about a 'bird's eye view' of the Keweenaw hues! Take note of the lack of color in the middle, where the Mendota channel makes its way into Lac La Belle. Must be that those trees are mostly pines and cedars. If you look real close, you can just make out the Mendota Lighthouse, too. What a spectacular vista is there to be had if you're willing to make the bumpy journey!

The second shot is from the U.P. in 1986... Lori Houle-Vial says this is a shot of her Dad, who wrote the date on the windshield that morning at their China Road Camp in Nisula... Brrr!!

It's been a gorgeous week on Pasty.com. Thanks for all the great pics.

Note from Charlie:
One of my favorite weeks of all time on the Pasty Cam was this week back in 1998 when we featured a "Pastyvision" panoramic view each day. Autumn is the favorite season of many to explore the U.P. :o)

Pity the person who returns from a Copper Country fall color tour only to find he had black and white film in his camera!

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. What a great view. We have a little color here. Also getting some rain today. Have a great day everyone!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 06:30 am:

Pat's "almost-aeriel-view" above reminds me of an amazing panorama from Scott Laurie which appears back in the archives, in the Phoenix area of the cliffs:

THANK YOU for the Autumn tour of the UP!

By Bob on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 08:17 am:

Hold on to your hats boys and girls!

tomorrow ought to be interesting in the Keweenaw.

I think they'll be raking our leaves in Marquette!

Tie down those ore boats. They may be looking
for the above harbor of refuge.

LOW PRESSURE FROM INDIANA INTO SOUTHERN MICHIGAN IS FORECAST TO INTENSIFY AS IT MOVES SLOWLY NORTHWARD INTO JAMES BAY BY SATURDAY EVENING. AS THE LOW PRESSURE MOVES THROUGH THE UPPER GREAT LAKES ON SATURDAY... THE WINDS WILL SHIFT TO THE NORTHWEST AND INCREASE TO 30 TO 40 MPH ALONG THE SHORELINE... WITH FREQUENT GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 50 MPH EXPECTED LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON INTO SATURDAY EVENING.

By mckenneyp, GR MI on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 08:20 am:

I've done a lot of fishing and such out of Lac La Belle and that area, and it is mostly pines and ceadar swamp around it. You can see if better on SKYPIXS shot but you can see the Ceadar Swamp / Bog to the south of the lake. It certinally is a pretty area. Doesn't look like we will be able to get up for the fall.

Hoping to be able to get up for the Dog Sled Race.

Been watching, just havn't posted much latley! Have a great day all!

By mckenneyp, GR MI on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 08:22 am:

Bob, Your right now. Gale Force winds are excepted and the wave forcast for Open Water on Lake Superior for Saturday Night is calling for 12 - 17 foot waves. That'll make it fun...

Gorgeous pictures today! To those of you fortunate enough to live there, Superior is an every day sight, but for me, I get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes every time I catch a glipse of the "Big Lake".

Thanks to you all for sharing some great Pics. I can't make it up to the Keewenaw this fall and it's killing me. These pictures help ease the pain.

By sandstone princess on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 09:59 am:

The photos are lovely. Fall is lovely. A beautiful time for a wedding;-) I remember a fall, the fall that the cliffdweller was in a play. The colors that year were incredible. Midwest Living had a 2 page spread the next fall, I recognized the photos from the fall before....does this make sense??
OK, I need some help from all you cleaver people. I just spent more than 1/2 hour on Google trying to find a poem or short story about turning 40. Tons of pages on gag gifts and where to buy etc., but no poems! The party has a hillbilly theme and I am not finding anything. I will check again late afternoon to give all youse guys time to dig out your old funny stuff.
Thanks in advance.

All I can say is "WOW" What a bunch of great photos! Does anyone know of the website that monitors the wave height at the Coast Guard buoys? I saw it a while back but can't remember the address. The only waves we have here are from the passing presidential motorcade...

I think this is what you're looking for!

By Jeff M, FL on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 10:48 am:

Thanks to SkyPics for the great shot of the old USAF radar base. Can I assume that this is a present day picture?
I had the privelege of serving as base commander there from '81-'83 and loved my time in the Keweenaw. The radar base was a special place. I wonder how many other veterans of the 665th RADS visit Pasty.com on a regular basis?
By the way, I've got a photo somewhere that shows 2 inches of snow on my car on October 1st, 1981.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 10:53 am:

I just had to post one more picture from Rick Anderson at Skypixs. Rick sent me this one last night and it's almost identical to the one Pat Siler sent in up above. Just shows you how high Mount Houghton really is, if the shot from the air is so similar! Thanks Rick and Pat! :->

By Dave H in East Tennessee on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 11:48 am:

Thanks for the pictures of the old Radar Base (Calumet Air Force Station) at Gratiot Lake. I worked there between '66 and '70, in the Engineering Office and the Commissary Store. The drive from Laurium in the fall season was always spectacular. In the winter it was all white.

By John / New Hampshire on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 11:49 am:

Really appreciate the great sky-high views! The one of the air-base brings back some memories. It does not show (or am I just missing it) the awesome softball field they kept. They used to hold weekend tournaments there that were typically high-scoring affairs as the outfield fence was quite "reachable" - even by me! Visiting teams from all over the copper country -Cozy Corner, Dick's Favorite Sports, The Loading Zone, Luigi's, Houseman's Drillers,.... good times! Anyone else remember playing there?

By L-O-V-E Pastycam! on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 11:54 am:

Maybe someone UP there will get a picture of the lake during this coming wind storm. I love seeing shots of the Big Lake with the Big Waves.
Thanks in advance to whoever can post a pic. Of course, please don't anyone endanger themselves! No pic is worth that.

Beautiful pictures of the beautiful Upper Peninsula. I have been graced to see it in all its autumn splendour several times. But I have also travelled far, my wandering ways taking me to many odd corners of the world. But, thank the Good Lord, He has allowed me to see the individual beauty of every place. There is no one "God's Country." God created it all. He has touched every place with His glorious hand.

I'm checking out all the sites you've mentioned about the bad weather predicted on the lakes this weekend. I posted late last night that I'm praying that all the freighters are off of the lakes this time or listen to the storm warnings & take refuge early. My Dad lost his life on November 10, 1975 on the Fitzgerald. I hope I never hear of any more men losing their lives like that in my lifetime. Also Jeffm from tampa bay my husband knew you when you were the commander in Keweenaw. Also remembers Dave Harj. His name is Rick & worked in civil engineering.

Maybe she will have pix for us on Monday.

By Tim, Saint Clair Shores, MI on Friday, October 15, 2004 - 06:34 pm:

The fall colors photos are the high water mark of pasty.com in my eyes. The snow shots are great too, but the brilliant colors and the unique landscape makes these my favorite photos of all. Speaking of high water, as of 6:25pm, the National Weather Service forecast for the eastern half of Lake Superior is calling for now 20-25 foot waves tomorrow. I am somewhat of a weather geek and I have never noticed a forecast calling for waves that high. The Fitz went down in waves between 20 and 30 feet high, so this is serious. It would be nice to see about 20 ore carriers snug as a bug riding out the storm in the Portage Canal tomorrow night.

Candy, your photo is really neat! I love to look at landscapes that are so different from ours. Also, the colors from the Gratiot Lake photo are incredible, all that orange!!

Yup. It looks like we're in for quite the storm. Batten down the hatches, people! My 16 year old is chopping kindling as I type and will be fireing (sp?) up the wood stove to help keep the house toasty. I feel sorry for all those football players/band members that must endure nasty weather this weekend.

Sandstoneprincess, the coffee you gave me is wonderful! What, with my Trader Joe's Bay Blend (from Capt'ns daughter #3)and my Door County Cherry Creme from you I'll be all set for inclement weather!

I just got back from the U.P. this evening was up there for a few days From Oct 12th to the 15th and it was a nice trip I had, got to see some of the fall colors, in the Keweenaw.
