Eight years ago, Jonathan Hopper saw this old brewery warehouse built around 1846. These old mining buildings are part of the heritage of the Copper Country. It is always interesting to wonder about their function and how much longer they will remain with us.

Looks like you got to go south to find snow, kosk. Does that sound somewhat upside down?

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 08:51 am:

JARMO - i hear that europe is suffering from a lack of snow ... is it affecting Suomi too??

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 08:57 am:

Pretty day in the Flint area with a nice fluffy covering of snow this morning--the kind that blows off as you back your car down the driveway. Single digit windchills. The kids will be in for recess today!

By Dennis Harju (Upsuomi) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 10:05 am:

Good morning from Wyoming, Cold and gray here! Our mountains have snow but snow pack levels are way down. The drought continues!

By lz (Llamamama) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 11:58 am:

On the shores of SW Lake Michigan we had nearly a foot at 5:30 AM this morning. 30 miles north we had about an inch! The snow bands are really beating up some of the areas coming off the lake.

By KJ (Kjinfremontmi) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 12:34 pm:

Hey Dennis,

What part of WY are you in? I was lucky growing up to spend a couple of weeks each summer in the Meeteetse area. Other than the UP, these are my fondest memories!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 12:42 pm:

I think the best Christmas present would be for everyone to have a "White Christmas"! Hope you all get your wish!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 02:35 pm:

How'd you like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island? Now I think I could enjoy that. I moved away from the snow belt down south to Lansing; however, it's nothing like the brochure. Snow is beautiful, but I could be happy just looking at pictures of it rather than experiencing it first hand. :o)

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 04:14 pm:

Some places in the NWLP have 18" inches of lake effect snow. Kalkaska, Mancelona, Petoskey, Gaylord etc. Down here in St. Clair county, 1". Over west of Pontiac 3 to 5"! I thought I heard Saginaw had quite a bit!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 04:22 pm:

Danbury--My friennds here in Toronto are always surprised to
learn that the Upper Peninsula is North of several locales in
Canada.

JeffKal--I just bought a copy of Jim Harrison's latest novel. Have
you seen it yet?

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 04:27 pm:

Hey guys, just remember, Santa looks better with a background of white!
Wrapped Christmas presents today and started baking cookies, I'm in the mood for HO, HO, HO!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 05:25 pm:

I got a kick today at work. Once a month we have the regional meeting and right after is the safety meeting. This months topic for the safety meeting was "winter driving, how to prepare". I tried to get out of it, but they made me go. I had to laugh when the instructor asked the people, "what would YOU do if you had to drive through 3 or even 6 inches of snow"?? I raised my hand and said I'd drive to work, where I used to live, that was a heavy frost!! In real life I would NEVER drive to work here because while I know how to drive in it, it's the other 2.4 million yahoo's that don't :P

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 06:03 pm:

so true, Capt. Paul, but they ain't yahoos, just inexperienced.

I was extremely proud of Motown drivers the other day when it suddenly turned very cold w snow squalls. That of course caused glare ice, which then got covered with snow. Most of this was pretty invisible on the roads. I was already out, and on my way home I was so pleased to see almost all the drivers driving appropriately!! going slow, not tailgaiting. Amazing!

By Cindy A. Slingerland (Yrarbil) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 07:17 pm:

Is there anyone out there from the LLHHS Class of '75?

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 08:16 pm:

Capt. Paul, I remember the Christmas Eve. in '04 while wintering in Rockport Tx. We got like 4" of snow, the most snow ever and the first snow on Christmas Eve, since 1890's. Talk about unexperienced drivers!!! Pure panic. But they are also awful when they get a little rain! I kinda miss being there this year but I'm secretly enjoying last week's blizzard and this weeks cold! Just don't tell anyone. :>)

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 09:33 pm:

Light snow with a temp of 28 at this time, high of 38 today, low will be 18 overnight. It will be near 60 agian the middle of next week. Now that's hard to take.If we ever got 3 inches or more of snow around here, afew miles N.of Knoxville,TN.it would keep me inside because of the rest of the driver's.I don't think very many around here grew up in the U.P.as I did. However, the roads here are so very hilly, and gaurdraills are few and far between, with such a long way down there,it would be best to stay home.If snow is uttered on the weather report here folks flock to the stores to hoard up on milk, bread, toilet paper ect.and the lines get long like today was.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Friday, December 8, 2006 - 02:17 am:

Thanks, for the reminder, kosk - looking on a map, I usually know. Wihtout a map, I misplaced Toronto somewhat to the north shore of Lake Superior. Of course, I wasn't thinking.
Now, geo-politically, the US is south of Canada - couldn't I make something up as to how a place in the US is always south of Canada, somehow, ... hmmm ...
Just trying. :)

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, December 8, 2006 - 07:13 am:

Danbury--

Think of all of the political wrangling that went into drawing those
boundaries. Isle Royale is a case in point. How much sense does it
make (not that I want to see it changed!!) that Isle Royale belongs
to Michigan rather than Minnesota or Ontario?

By Danbury (Danbury) on Friday, December 8, 2006 - 11:07 am:

Here's another one, as good as I recall it: in the east, in the north of todays NH, the border between the french and the english (read: way back - think treaty of Paris) was supposed to be along a parallel from the west, along a natural feature (some criteria regarding the Connecticut river headwaters) from the east. Due to the lack in precise measurements, the lines didn't meet ...

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Saturday, December 9, 2006 - 12:05 am:

Hey Danbury! Here,s another one! We live in Southeast Michigan and we look SOUTH on Canada at this point! (North of Lake St. Clair!)
