'Tis the season for trees all adorned and festive lights shining, as folks UP North employ varied techniques to dress up their homes. Scott Mitchell spotted this decorated wonder, complete with a smiley all bundled up, hanging out with the covering of snow on the branches. Then we head on over to Frank Anderson's deck, where the evergreen branches and railings are lit up through the fluff. While most people choose lights and decorations, Ashley Byykkonen found a row of houses trimmed up and looking good enough to eat! All it takes is a bit of frosting and some colored candies and your house will be a thing of beauty along gingerbread lane.
There's just something about a house all decorated and aglow that brightens any day!

We got snow for Christmas! Only about 4 inches so far but is still snowing steadily. Our satellite dish is out because of the weight (I'm too lazy to go out yet and clear it off). Also the power has blinked out twice. Aw winter!

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 09:34 am:

Boy, we sure got a lot of snow in Painesdale last night!! The plow went around the corner and the banks are pretty big. I am so happy!!

Merry Christmas Everyone in Pastyland.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 09:38 am:

Those pictures sure are beautiful. I love colored lights rather than the clear ones. They're so pretty & even prettier when covered with snow. Those houses sure do look good enough to eat. But I'd rather look & admire them & all the work someone went through to make them. We got just a dusting of snow here overnight.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 10:02 am:

Cotton, I'm with you. Christmas has always meant colored lights to me. They're so beautiful. The clear lights just mean winter and I like to see Christmas the way it used to be, with all the colored lights.

By Sunrise Side MI (Ilovelucy2) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 10:18 am:

Great pictures, the third one looks good enough to eat!!!! Safe traveling everyone and a Very Merry Christmas!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 10:22 am:

MsKatie, are you out there? Open your gift.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 10:32 am:

All of these pictures are great. If you were not in a festive mood yet, you should be now.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 10:53 am:

I was wondering where I left my smiley face ornament. Guess it fell out of the camper this summer and someone picked it up!!

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 11:03 am:

We got snow in Ontonagon! Also lost power half of the night! But we are up an running right now!
Merry Christmas everyone.

By Vicky Pranger (Vickyp) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 11:20 am:

Great pics! I recognize the second one as the same deck that the kids were pictured on a couple days ago - when I looked back, sure enough is the same. Guess those kids will need coats and mittens today.

I check this site out every day and love it. I've never posted, but am going to start as it seems like one big happy family. Joanie (Goonnabeayooper), you crack me up!

From Mount Clemens MI where its dark and cloudy, Merry Christmas to all!

By Dorothy Stewart (Bootjackbabe) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 11:50 am:

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 12:07 pm:

I need a big favor from all of you Yoopers. Would you please take all of your window fans outside, plug them in and aim them south? I desperately need some of your snow. Pretty please? (sob)

By Dorothy Stewart (Bootjackbabe) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 12:55 pm:

Weather report please??????? Did you get any snow overnight in the CC??
Just talked to family in Denver---still shoveling out from the storm.
They ordered 100 frozen ravioli from Gino's for Christmas dinner!!!! They are LOST in transit!!!
Searching all over for the Fed-Ex delivery.
Hope they arrive in time.

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 01:19 pm:

The little yellow guy with the big smile in the top picture certainly needs his earmuffs. I like the ice hanging from the glass ball, too. Here's a shakey one I took outside of Baraga a few years back, I think the construction business slows a bit around this time of year. There was a Santa looking out the drivers window of the truck, too. I was laughing too hard to hold steady.

Smileyville, Michigan?

By Danielle Adams (Badkid) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 01:35 pm:

woah the cement truck looks awesome! never really thought someone would do something like that to a vehicle. but then again the EL Ryerson, for ya'll who don't know what that is, it's an ore boat. speaking of .....I saw a car last week with xmas lights inside of it, yeah someone put xmas lights inside their car lol never saw that before.

By Danielle Adams (Badkid) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 01:36 pm:

EL Ryerson has xmas lights on its decks....I saw a pic of it on boatnerd.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 01:37 pm:

Richard, that's too good.

Danielle, you're a smart girl liking colored lights. That's always been a Christmas tradition and I don't know who changed it. The clear are great as winter decorations, but not for Christmas. Only my opinion, of course.

Smileyville, eh? Good one!

By Harold G. Pesola (Pepsi1) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 01:43 pm:

Here in Elkhart, Indiana we have some wind and dark skys. Temperature around 40 degrees. We've had lots of rain but no snow for Santa this year. They are saying rain, mixed with snow.......I've been a Yooper since my grandmother took me to Calumet in the early 50's on a Greyhound buss (got into Calumet, next to Parkside about 4:30 PM) and I've made my better half a Yooper went I took her on our honeymoon (1965) for a fast trip from Detroit to Fort Wilkins and back in a Corvair, sleeping in the car and where ever we could. Good Old Days........
I hope and Pray that all with have a great Christmas and a very Happy and Healthy New Years.

By Harold G. Pesola (Pepsi1) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 01:48 pm:

I also like the colored lights, but sometimes all of one color instead of the mixed colors. Grandma (Heighes)Zetsell had icecikes and stars that glowed in the dark on her tree. Her boarder for years and years Mark Lakner used to pick up her tree on the way home from work at Chrysler's. Those "old" memories are the best.......

By Dorothy Stewart (Bootjackbabe) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 02:03 pm:

When I was a kid growing up in West Hancock we would always walk around the neighborhood looking at all the Christmas decorations.
Mr. Sincock who lived on Ethel would put lights on all his Chritmas trees and then flood them with water. This would make a huge ice formation and the lights would shine through the pretty frozen water. This was always one of my favorite places to visit. He also used those big colored lights---wish I had a picture.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 02:13 pm:

Remember the bubble lights? Those were my favorite.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 02:24 pm:

Welcome Vickie! I look forward to your posts.

By Danielle Adams (Badkid) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 02:31 pm:

I'm sure that there are thousands of Smiley Faces around. The first thing that came to my mind was: Ashley Indiana The Home of the "Smiley Face".

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 03:01 pm:

Notroll-- Thanks a million. That cement truck was always one of
our landmarks on our drive back from the CC to Ishpeming at
Christmas time. I haven't seen it the past couple of years.

By Sunrise Side MI (Ilovelucy2) on Saturday, December 23, 2006 - 05:42 pm:

Roger: Its in West Branch Mi. along side I 75 about 70 miles north of Bay City/Saginaw. A few years ago they wanted to re-paint it and the town got together and donated monies to keep the happy face on there. Just a little trivia of good ol' Michigan
