Katie Keranen seems to have gotten right up close to zoom in on these snowy berries. So close, in fact, that you can see the detail in several of the snowflakes atop those red orbs. Now I'm not quite sure what type of berries these are, could even be crab apples for all I know, but I'm sure all the birds that stick around here UP North for the winter will find them delectable no matter what you call them.

Speaking of tasty berries (for people too). Has anyone had a wintergreen berry? I remember my dad giving me one to eat as a child. It was delicious. I've only had that one, but the memory has never left me.

I love that shot! But I'm glad we don't have that snow.

Not sure but they look like mountain ash berries. The UP has the biggest and most beautiful anywhere. They aren't edible to humans and even the birds avoid them until there's nothing else, kinda like that box of bland cereal at the back of the cupboard.

They look a little too big and red for mountain ash berries; they are typically more orange with more berries to a bunch. My maiden name Pihlaja means mountain ash tree.

Hi Kosk, we have wintergreen plants in our woods up north, so I've eaten many of the berries over the years. They are a unique taste.
My vivid childhood memory is eating wild strawberries; the whole top of a bluff by the lake was covered with them, sunwarmed & sweet.

I knew I'd seen a picture similar to this one. I found it in my 2003 calendar (March) and it was taken by the late Dan Urbanski. https://www.pasty.com/cam/2002/b0313.jpg He called the berries in his picture winterberries and describes them on that page (3-13-01). I found other frozen berry pictures by Dave Walli (11-14-02) and Taka Aoki (11-27-02).

I love this close-up picture, with the detail, including individual snow flakes! As my youngest son would say, "Sweet!".
Lovely winter picture. The UP has so much to offer all year long!

They might be hawthorn or possibly crab apple though I can't see any thorns in these pictures. The following sentence is taken from the site below; This familiar tree will attain a height of 30 feet and lives to a great age. It possesses a single seed-vessel to each blossom producing a separate fruit, which when ripe is a brilliant red and this is in miniature a stony apple. http://botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/h/hawtho09.html#des
Have you all gotten your "snow" stamps from the US post office? They are picts of actual snowflakes, one of which is from somewhere around Houghton.

I think it's a Chuck Berry, maybe even a Halle Berry!
By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 - 05:38 pm:
The stamp in the lower left corner was photographed in beautiful downtown Houghton.
