Somehow this photo snapped by Paul Trautman, gives off an essence of comfort, even though it's obviously not comfortably warm with the snow-covered ground. It won't be long before open water like this will be iced over for the winter. You can see the beginnings of thin ice forming and extending out from the shore. It's been snowing every day here in the Keweenaw, so if this keeps up, the snow will be piled high around those picnic tables, too, almost obscuring them from sight. I guess any worries about not having a white Christmas are gone!

Looks like someone tried to drive to the lake and fish from his car.

I wonder if that is the Gratiot lake boat launch? Great pic, serene, tantalizing.

I've only been to Gratiot Lake boat launch once, but this picture does look like it.

That is a beautiful postcard shot! With scenery like that I sure wouldn't mind the cold and snow!

A perfect picture for a card. Even in the winter the Copper Country looks great. Cold here in Ohio but no snow. Don't think we will have a white Christmas this year.

Great photo choice...it is serene. With 15 inches of snow on Friday and frigid temps, I believe N/W IL will have a white Christmas. Yes!

Lovely picture.
I congratulate you on your snow, although some of you there may think it's too early.
But I was there a few times in the recent past when it was too warm, no snow, and you lost the prime time between Christmas and New Year's Day for snomobile and ski tourism. One year was pretty depressing with the mush and slush I thought I was escaping from down here in Motown area!
It is a beautiful sight. Here in the city, I love how a blanket of snow mercifully covers the ugliness of the world for a time.

It reminds me a bit of a Courier & Ives Christmas scene. Very peaceful.
By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 - 11:03 am:
Lovely pic! Here in Esky you can see the heat rising out of Little Bay de Noc with this cold weather. Depressing to see summer heat go away like that, but makes for an interesting scene. Having two big lakes boats in adds to the interest. Lots nicer to look at than the white-out we drove thru on U.S. 2 yesterday afternoon. That was scary! Glad my wife was driving tho she didn't seem to like it. Later in the day I heard today that the road was closed for hours in the St. Ignace area. Lots of cars in the ditch or just stopped on the shoulder; driving in white-outs is about as bad as it gets, I think.

CALUMET WEATHER REPORT
I started the snowblower this morning for the first time this season. Started it again after the snowplow went by the house.
How sad it is to drive by Stillwaters and see the parking lot unplowed for the first time ever. No lights from inside the building at night is a cold feeling.

Hi Everyone!! This picture makes me want to get out there and try snowshoeing. It is something I've never tried, as I'm not a winter person. I hope to become one soon as I need the exercise to regulate my diabetes. Anyone have some snowshoes laying around unused? I'd like to buy a pair that are not too expensive. Suz

Suzie:
Be sure to get "Bob Maki" bindings. Don't use the straps that come with many snow shoes. You buy them at Northwood's Trading Post in Hancock. They work the best! They also might have some used show shoes for sale.

Also check out Iverson Snowshoe Company in Shingleton, MI.

Where's Captain Paul today? Miss you and Dr. Nate!
By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 - 04:41 pm:
Suzie, When we bought our snowshoes, we bought one pair of Atlas and one pair of Tubbs. The shoes and the bindings have been great for many winters. I hope you love to snowshoe as much as we do.
Are there any plans for the Stillwaters Properties? Is it up for sale? Seems sad for the building to be sitting vacant.

Don't know for sure, but this looks like the east end of Sunday Lake in Wakefield. Hmmm?
By Brion Beauchene (Bbeauchene) on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 - 02:22 pm:
This is definately not Gratiot Lake we have a place close to there and the launch does not have a fence or the nice trees this one does.
