In today's photo from eight years ago, the Quincy Mine is barely visible as the wind whips the snow into a frenzy. This week, though, we're looking at bike riding weather, with temperatures expected in the low 50s by Wednesday.

That's pretty much like it: you can't predict the weather according to what you've had in the past. Looks chilly in the picture though. Brrr.

It's a mean 24 degrees here in Ill-annoy. Cold enough for snow but none in sight. Still no snow in the UP? Wasn't last years snowfall below the normal 200 inches?

By dlp (Babyseal) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 09:00 am:

Gonna be a Yooper: The normal snowfall here in the Keweenaw is closer to 300 inches. And yup, we were slightly below that mark last year as well as the year before. I know that for a fact as I measure the snowfall for the National Weather Service.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 09:16 am:

Baby Seal, awwww, come on what's another 100 inches! Ha, Ha!

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 09:25 am:

That extra 100 in. could mean a great deal if you're in the business providing to snow hounds such as snowmobilers, skiiers, etc.

Don't panic yet... remember last year?1

1. The cumulative 24 hr snowfall total thru the end of November, 2005 was a mere of 6.5" with a max snow depth of 3.0".

2. The first significant snow was 10" on Dec 12, resulting in the first enduring snow depth of 9", which was the minimum snow depth recorded until the 8" on April 10, 2006, nearly four months later.

3. The total snowfall for the 2005-2006 Season was 247 inches.

4. So far this year (as of Nov 15) cumulative snowfall = 12", max (non-enduring) snow depth = 6". (Kinda demonstrates that early snowfall, before about mid-December doesn't really count for much over the long term.)

(ooops, a typo?)

Started A Stolen Season by Steve Hamilton Saturday afternoon and finished it this morning at 1 a.m. Very much a page turner! Steve writes U.P. mysteries that take place in the Paradise area. His descriptions of the weather there along Lake Superior can chill you to the bone! Got the book at my local library. I think its his best one yet! The shocker comes in the middle of the book.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 10:41 am:

I might have to read that book. Thanks for the info.

A few weeks ago I asked for a pasy recipe. I tried the one from Charlesinesky yesterday. I did use lard in the crust. I did add a little carrots. They turned out great! Thank you Charles and the others for their input. I also saved some links posted by Davesou that day.

Marsha, thanks for your review of Steve Hamiton's new book. Ms Katie recommended him a couple months ago...and I will be forever indebted.

By Suzy Lofquist (Suzymn41) on Monday, November 20, 2006 - 10:25 pm:

I just finished Steve Hamilton's book and before that read William Kent Krueger's newest-Copper River which takes place UP there too. Krueger's books have all been written at The St. Clair Grill in St. Paul which is just across the river from where I live. There seem to be alot of mysteries coming from the Up area which sort of makes me a little uneasy when I drive by a deserted looking camp-do these things really happen there? The book Ursula Under about the little girl who fell down a mine shaft between Eagle River and Eagle Harbor was just a little too close to my normal stomping ground- I believe that one may have been based on the true occurance some time ago.

By suzie (Suzypoo) on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 - 12:31 pm:

Hi everyone! Hasn't this weather in the Copper country been just great? Hey, where has sur5er been lately? I miss her posts.
