Eight years ago, the Pasty Cam featured a welcome sight for all Yoopers heading north.

Today and the rest of the week, deer hunting widows can bag their buck at the Hut Inn Restaurant in Kearsarge. You can hear all about it in our new radio spot. (Dial-up folks--that's an MP3 file that will open and may take awhile. the gist--mention you are a deer hunting widow at the Hut and receive a dollar.)

Very nice picture. Morning!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 07:27 am:

I like that picture. I'll be seeing that view next week when I go to my daughters for Thanksgiving.

Mel Kansas: Thanks so much for the link to the Helsinki Complaints Choir. It was GREAT and I encourage all pasty cammers to check into yesterday's What's UP and listen to it. It is indeed a small world.

This makes me homesick!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 08:39 am:

Good morning,

A large (7.8) earthquake hit the Kurile Islands north of Japan this morning. A tsunami warning was issued for northern Japan and one did hit the coast....... all 16 inches of it!! Still, no one takes chances anymore after the Indonesian quake 2 years ago.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 09:23 am:

Capt. Paul, I saw the news about the tsunami on my web page. Where did the term "tsunami" come from? What is the largest scale earthquake ever recorded?

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 09:43 am:

Joanie:
The term "tsunami" is a Japanese word for "harbour wave." This is because tsunami tend to be more focused and larger in harbours and bays.

The largest earthquake recorded was the 1960 quake in Chile that registered a moment magnitude of 9.5. The largest quake recorded in the United States was the 1964 Alaskan earthquake, which had a moment magnitude of 9.2.

Moment magnitude is a scale of measuring the energy released in an earthquake. It is very similar to the Richter Scale that most people are familiar with, but it is better at measuring the magnitude of large earthquakes.

In the newest Lake Superior Magazine I received yesterday, there was a good article about pasties. It had a good piece of it about Pasty.com. If it's as yucky outside at your place as it is here, pull the shades, turn on lots of light and read a good book or tackle a long-put off chore. Happy Wednesday all :>)

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 10:13 am:

Dr. Nat, thank you for the info. I always look forward to learning the "FACTS" from you and the Captain.

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 12:12 pm:

I know someone else who knows a lot about the U. P. -- at least
about Esky. That's Jeff Daniels. How that celebrated actor and
native of Chelsea a bit west of AnnArbor could know what this
town is like on Opening Day of deer season beats me, but his
"Esky In The Moonlight" sure captures this town today. The
place is mostly empty of men. They're all out in the woods
looking for the elusive deer. I had forgotten how nuts guys get
up here for deer season. The sad thing about it, of course, is
that Jeff Daniels in the Chelsea area has a better chance of
shooting a deer than the hunters up here.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 01:09 pm:

Jeff Daniels also has a clever song on his CD about driving 41 in the UP. Not as good, however, as "you can't drink a fat woman thin" on the same CD.

Everyone down here in SE MI should take the opportunity to visit his Purple Rose Theater (in Chelsea, near Ann Arbor) The players are professionals, not amateurs, and the plays are excellent. The seating is all around the stage with no seat more than a few rows back, well elevated. It's an amazing experience.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 01:25 pm:

Yea, what Dr. Nat said!! ;-) And actually, to add on, Michigan and the upper Great Lakes region has had some fairly strong earthquakes in the past as well, NOT related to faulting.

Ahh Esky in the da Moonlight, what a crazy film that was. Although it does capture some of what it's like during this time of year in the Yoop, I think "Da Second Week of Deer Camp" is a more accurate description of what deer hunting is like in the UP/northern Wisconsin. I wonder how Uncle Chuck and the Betsy Boys are doing this year so far??

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 02:56 pm:

If the Betsy Boys shoot something, can we call them the Beastie Boys?

To touch on the earthquake/Richter scale conversation...the largest earthquakes have been estimated around 9 up to 9.2 on the Richter scale. The scale is logarithmic, so magnitude 5 has waves that are 10 times larger than a magnitude 4 and so on up the scale, the difference in the amount of energy goes as, magnitude 5 releases about 30 times more energy than a magnitude 4. To put this into perspective, a magnitude 9 earthquake releases about the same amount of energy as if you were to detonate about a billion tons of TNT.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 05:11 pm:

Marsha, that's funny!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 05:14 pm:

By the way; the only earthquakes we have in our area is when my husband eats chili! ha, ha!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 05:40 pm:

I allways feel earthquakes when Precious gives me a kiss.

Hey Uncle Chuck, Any big bucks hangin' at Little Betsy?

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 - 09:39 pm:

My evening was enhanced by listening to the "Helsinki
Complaints_" and the "Bag a Buck ad for the Hut." Thanks Maija
for sending me back to yesterday's "What's Up."

By Roger Somero (Rsomero) on Thursday, November 16, 2006 - 02:07 am:

A tsunami hit northern California at Crescent City today and damaged the harbor. Docks and boats were damaged. The Japanese earthquake caused it. Over 40 years ago another one hit there and 11 people died.
