Eight years ago, a new water tower went up on Quincy Hill (in the forefront -- with the old tower in the background). The controversy? Could it stay white or did it need to be painted black like the old? The result? It is black. It was in the early stages of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. While the tower is not in park boundaries, it is part of the "viewscape."

Sorry for the delay this morning -- technical difficulties.

Good Morning! 46 degrees, cloudy, a little rain in the forecast here in Houghton. Don't forget to VOTE, have a great day!!!

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 10:35 am:

Good morning everyone. Remember how when winter storms come in and the weather forecaters use the term Chinook to describe the dip in the airstream that causes the cold, miserable weather? Well, being new to Portland, Oregon I just learned they have a thing here called the Pineapple express. Warm wet weather from the southwest (meaning Hawaii) comes and just dumps a whole lot of rain. It was 64 and pouring yesterday, and about 60 and pouring this morning when I left the house at 5:00. My children are sprouting mushrooms! How I wish I was back home preparing my snowblower for a good winter instead of trying to figure out to burn the brush pile in a monsoon! Happy election day, the ads are almost over!

Does anyone know who won last month's contest. It still doesnt show who won yet.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 10:55 am:

Actually Richard, the Chinook refers to the downsloping winds off the Rockies that warm the plains, sometimes incredibly fast!! Below is an excerpt from the BlackHillsWeather.com site of what a Chinook can do:

"On January 22, 1943, the northern and eastern slopes of the Black Hills were at the western edge of an Arctic airmass and under a temperature inversion. A layer of shallow Arctic air hugged the ground from Spearfish to Rapid City. At about 7:30am MST, the temperature in Spearfish was -4 degrees Fahrenheit. The chinook kicked in, and two minutes later the temperature was 45 degrees above zero. The 49 degree rise in two minutes set a world record that is still on the books. By 9:00am, the temperature had risen to 54 degrees. Suddenly, the chinook died down and the temperature tumbled back to -4 degrees. The 58 degree drop took only 27 minutes. The chinook was also doing strange things to the Rapid City temperature that same day. Around 10:30am, the thermometer recorded a temperature jump from 20 degrees to 56 degrees in 5 minutes, a 36 degree rise. Around noon, the temperature plummeted 47 degrees in 5 minutes from 60 to 13 above zero. About a half hour later, a 35 degree rise took place when the reading went from 15 to 50 degrees, and another precipitous drop transpired about 2:20pm when the temperature fell 41 degrees from 58 to 17 above."

Other countries also experience a Chinook-like wind. In Switzerland it is known as the Schneefresser, or "snow eater". In the Andes Mountains it is known as the Zonda.

I believe what you are referring to Richard in terms of nasty winter weather is the Alberta Clipper, the Saskatchewan Schooner, or my personal favorite, the Manitoba Mama!!

Capt. Paul inspired me to do some more homework on the word Chinook:

[noun] a warm dry wind blowing down the eastern slopes of the Rockies
Synonyms: wind, snow eater

[noun] a member of an important North American Indian people who controlled the mouth of the Columbia river; they were organized into settlements rather than tribes
Synonyms: Chinook

[noun] pink or white flesh of large Pacific salmon
Synonyms: salmon, king salmon

[noun] a Penutian language spoken by the Chinook people
Synonyms: Chinookan, Chinook

[noun] large Pacific salmon valued as food; adults die after spawning
Synonyms: salmon, king salmon, quinnat salmon, Onchorynchus tshawtscha

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 11:54 am:

Thanks Capt. Paul, I guess I just can't remember what Fred Wagner or Karl Bohnak used to say. Actually, you are right with the Alberta Clipper. Still, I wish the rain would stop for a bit. Portland has recorded over 7 inches of rain since the 1st of Novemeber, with more toward the coast. If you saw the Seattle game last night, you got a bit of a feel for it. At least in snow you can go out and have fun in it!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 12:04 pm:

Not a problem Richard. I hate working out in the field when it rains; I always liked the snow better. One never seemed to get as wet and that chilled to the bone feeling when snow fell as opposed to rain.

Sorry I didn't see the Seattle game last night. I figured it would be a snoozer so I watched the CMA awards instead ;-)

CONGRATS AGAIN MIKIE!!! Don't see much of you
anymore on here. Hope things are going good in
Berkley.

By Julwisc (Julwisc) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 01:54 pm:

I was No. 84 when I voted this morning. Then, I went to the store and the total came to $84.84. What were the odds of that?! Too bad I don't believe in gambling (and, no, I don't make exceptions for the lottery). Get out and VOTE today!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 05:38 pm:

Good for you, Mikie. Nice to hear from you.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 06:16 pm:

Yayyyyyyy Mikie. You're right cuz I checked off and on between 5:30 and 7:30 when I left to go to vote and then off to work. Good for you!!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 06:19 pm:

Julwisc, I was #65 and I was there 1/2 hour after the polls opened. Good turnout I guess.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 06:29 pm:

Deb S. and Julwisc, I was number 470 today. My son voted for the very first time today. That was a big thing for me to be able to accompany him to the polls. I was also impressed he knew exactly what he wanted to vote for or against. he was number 471. Proud day for Mamma.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 06:43 pm:

Way to go MIkie. Nice to hear from you.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 07:38 pm:

i had to write myself in on a couple of spots...can't allow someone to go uncontested.

They put a new water tower down here..well an added one...it is painted a nice sky blue color...its on a hill, so fits in nice against the sky. No planes have hit it..been there now for about 4 years.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 07:46 pm:

Too funny about writing yourself in Dave. I wrote in one of my co-workers a couple of times just for fun.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 10:12 pm:

Had to go to a meeting in downtown Port Huron yesterday evening (Monday). Stopped by the Thomas Edison Riverside Park under the Blue Water Bridge(s) Lo & behold just as we pulled into a park spot, what enters the St. Clair River right smack in front of us, but the Edward L Ryerson in all her glory! What a beauty! I've always wanted to see this ship, didn't think I ever would! What are the odds of this? I thought this newly in service again ship just goes from Marquette to Escanaba to Indiana Harbor and back? Any "boat nerds" out here know what this ship is doing down at this end of the state?
Grabbed my camera and got off several shots. It was getting dark but a couple of pics were decent enough to put in my "Guest Gallery"
Actually the world headquarters of boatnerd.com was just down the road aways but we had to get to the meeting!
The moon rising on the horizon way out on Lake Huron was fantastic!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 - 07:39 am:

Sounds wonderful, Russemmons. Nothing like spotting a freighter
in th moonlight.
