On a trek to Bare Bluffs, near Bete Grise, you'll discover so many different views, both high and low, like these recently encountered by Grant Soehnel. Closer to sea level, he spotted some trees balancing precariously on an overhanging jut of roots and sand. Amazing that the weight of those trees don't just push them over the edge. It must be the roots holding everything together. Then Grant traveled to a higher elevation to spy the tip of the Keweenaw off in the distance. Still beautiful even having undergone the change of seasons from summer to fall.

My calendar says today is Veteran's Day (observed), with tomorrow being Veteran's Day (traditional), which is totally confusing me, since I thought Veteran's Day was always celebrated on Nov. 11th. Whatever the case is, be sure you thank a vet either today or tomorrow for their service to our country! Along those same lines, I had a reminder from a Marine Vet some of you may find familiar ... Z-Man ... letting me know that today is also the Marine Corps Birthday, so there's a dual reason to thank a Marine Vet today. Semper Fi!

Nice pictures!

Today is also the anniversary of the day the Fitz went down. Thinking about you Cheryl!!!

By Joanne Janiszewski (Joanne) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 07:32 am:

I think that is the same tree I was standing under when we came up the first weekend in October. I have the same picture. That beach is awesome as are the sites.

Thanks to all the Veterans, specially the Marines, Forever True, ZMan!
A prayer to all that went down with the Edmund Fitzgerald.

By Jim Nicholas (Jimn) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 08:40 am:

MY CALENDAR SAYS THAT TOMORROW IN VETERANS DAY. THE 11th. ALWAYS HAS BEEN AS FAR AS I KNOW. I TOO AM A VETERAN OF THE KOREAN ERA. THANK YOU TO ALL VETERANS EVERYWHERE, AND TO THOSE SERVING NOW THROUGH OUT THE WORLD.

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 08:48 am:

HAPPY MARINE CORP BIRTHDAY TO ALL MY FELLOW MARINES AND VIETNAM VETERANS. SEMPER FI.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 09:09 am:

SEMPER FI to my nephew James who proudly served duty in Iraq. So proud you served and relieved to have you returned home safe!

By LAURA ROZMAN (Laura) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 09:32 am:

Hi mom(Cheryl) thinking of you today. It would be great if someone would post a picture of the Edmund Fitzgerald today since it is the anniversary of her demise.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 09:45 am:

The Bare Bluff photo is a dandy. To be able to see around the Point and also the Hurons--a neat shot. Not related to the great photos above but to yesterday's question re Mt. Ripley: the long, low building is a water tank and serves Ripley, the community to the east of the hill.

By Mel, Kansas (Mehollop) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 10:00 am:

As Deb S. said, today is also the anniversary of the loss of the Fitz - remembering as always:

Ernest McSorley - John McCarthy - James Pratt - Michael Armagost - George Holl - Edward Bindon - Thomas Edwards - Russel Haskell - Oliver Champeau - Frederick Beetcher - Thomas Bentsen - Thomas Borgeson - Nolan Church - Ransom Cundy - Bruce Hudson - Allen Kalmon - Gordon MacLellan - Joseph Mazes - Eugene O'Brien - Karl Peckol - John Poviach - Robert Rafferty - Paul Riipa - John Simmons - William Spengler - Mark Thomas - Ralph Walkton - David Weiss - Blaine Wilhelm

Remembering the Edmund Fitzgerald and her crew on the 31st anniversary. Never to be forgot!

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 10:35 am:

Does it strike you as interesting that both Z-Man and E. Neil Harri are Marines and fine photographers -- and Yoopers, too?

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 10:39 am:

Thanks for the picture Barb, don't think I've ever had the experience of seeing the Edmund Fitzgerald. Wonder if they'll be playing the song on the radio today: "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" by: Gordon Lightfoot. Maybe someone will make a request.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 10:55 am:

Thanks Barb. Mikie

Here is a short article from BOATNERD on my experience aboard the EDMUND FITZGERALD way back in 1958 during her maiden season. Also aboard that year was my 2nd engineer, Carl Makkinen from Calumet.

Good sailing to all today and remember all those who have passed away while sailing on the lakes...

I just found this shot in my inbox, from Neil Harri. It's the same location as today's photo, with Bare Bluff on the lower left corner and on to the tip of the Keweenaw, with Manitou Island in view also. This shot was back in July, that's why you're seeing so much green! :->

The view from Bare bluff is probably one of the best views in all the Keweenaw. A friend and I took the rather laborious trek to the top this summer to check it out for the first time.

Here is a link to the panoramic photo I took at the top (warning to those with dial-up, this is a large file):

Thanks to Mary Drew for sharing the picture and to Neil Harri for taking it in the first place.
Beautiful photo.

There is a beer named after the Fitzgerald. It's pretty good if you like dark porter, but I have kind of mixed feelings about the use of the name for a commercial product.

E. Neil Harri, Happy Marine Corp Birthday! Love your pics, Semper Fi!

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 08:12 pm:

Beautiful pictures! The view from Bare Bluff is so special that I think next summer (or fall)it will be on our "to do" list. Thank you for all the interesting things you feature on this site. It is my favorite site to visit.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 08:26 pm:

Thanks Mel for mentioning everybody's name who went down on the Fitz and to Barb for the great picture of her.

The following link will take you to a very touching tribute to the men who were lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald 31 years ago. I used this in my fourth grade class today along with a wonderful book called The Edmund Fitzgerald, the Song of the Bell. You could hear a pin drop in my room. I know the kids were very moved by it.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 09:31 pm:

Cindy--
Thank you so much for the link. My eyes are still blurry with
tears. Two of my favorite pieces of music, Lake Superior, the
Edmund Fitzgerald and a tribute to the men who served on her
and perished. I will play this link for my students on Monday. I
wasn't able to do the Edmund Fitzgerald justice today because
we were observing Remembrance Day (Veteran's Day) at our
school today.

I am fortunate to work with someone from the Soo in Canada.
He was heading home for his mom's birthday and promised to
blow a kiss to the big lake for me. I'm sure he'll be pleased to
listen to the story and your link on Monday. The kids in my class
take turns holding my model freighter while they listen to the
Lightfoot song and look at the postcards I put on display.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 10, 2006 - 10:40 pm:

Cindy, I second what Kosk said. That was beautiful and we've added it to our favorites. Thank you so much.

Cindy- I can't get it to work. Guess it won't with dialup.

Eddyfitz, I also enjoyed reading your story. It must have been an interesting life, for sure. Thanks for sharing it.
