I've seen gray squirrels, I've seen red squirrels, I've even seen black squirrels, but I don't think I've ever spotted one like Frederic W. Koski did recently, somewhere in the woods of the Upper Peninsula. Actually this little white guy is a color variant of the gray squirrel (as is the black squirrel too) and not a true albino, since he doesn't have pink eyes. He's going to have the perfect camouflage coat to hide from predators, once the snows decide to stay put here for the winter months. I sure hope he's stored away enough nuts and acorns to feed himself and his family for the long cold months ahead!

Speaking of squirrels, the gray squirrel has taken up residence here in ILL-ANNOY and they seem to be getting along with the red squirrels. I can see them out the window stealing little bites out of my pumpkin and gourd display on the deck. Three red squirrels and one lonely gray, eating side by side!!

I had a gray squirrel that came around here for years. She had a shortened tail. I could feed her right out of my hands, she would sit right next to me. I used to feed her peanuts hence she got the name "Peanuts". She'd come right up to the patio door to let us know when she was there & she was hungry. I havn't had one like her since she's gone.

Cotton, my mother-in-law lived in Lake Tomahawk, Wisconsin and also had a pet gray squirrel that came right up to her and ate peanuts out of her hands! She named him "Rocky" and sadly, he's also gone. "Peanuts" and "Rocky", gone, but never forgotten, adding sparkle to our human lives!

Some years ago my sister in Dollar Bay had a family of white squirrels living in one of their trees. If I remember right they eventually got into the attic which was not good.

I worked at the wildlife rehab center here for 10 years and never saw a white squirrel. Black squirrels (melanistic), red squirrels, fox squirrels, grey squirrels, never white (leucistic). It's really cute.
