The U.P. has been besieged with winds of late, making for some stirred-up waters crashing and splashing on the shores of Lake Superior. Today's photo by Brian and Shawn Malone is a perfect example of the conflict you experience when watching a storm ravage the waters and shores of the Big Lake. Even with the presence of danger in plain view, you are still mesmerized by the color of the roiling water and the sheer power it displays.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 06:57 am:

Wow! That's awesome! Where was this picture taken?

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 06:59 am:

Great pic!

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 07:25 am:

The picture looks like a beautiful painting and we have been coming to the UP for almost 30 years for vacation and it is that beautiful.

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 07:41 am:

An absolutely fantastic album too!

By Steve (Chevysac) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 07:42 am:

If I'm not mistaken, the picture looks to be taken on Presque Isle in Marquette. The lip you see in the lower left of the picture is where teens jump off in calmer water and much warmer air temperatures. The faint point of land on the horizon is likley shot point, or the point of land that sticks out just east of the roadside turnouts between Marquette and Autrain. I grew up listening to these waves from my bedroom just a 1/2 mile from the lake. This picture makes me hear them and miss Lake superior even more.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 07:46 am:

Sparkling crystal clear waters!! Beautiful shot. Wish I could hear the waves from my bedroom!!! Sometimes when the wind is blowing, I pretend it's the lake sounds!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 07:50 am:

that one needs to be a wallpaper..as do the other images in the gallery

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 08:32 am:

Fantastic picture. Wonderful colors. I've never seen Her looking so green. The curve of those waves...

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 08:48 am:

About the same colour green as if someone were out there in a boat!!! ;-)

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 08:50 am:

That is such a beautiful photo. I always loved the Big Lake when it was moody.

By Lak (Lak) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 08:51 am:

Very nice picture! It sure does look like a painting. Lake Superior is so awesome! Think of the many, many different looks and colors of the Great Lake that pictures have captured.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 08:53 am:

A thermos of coffee, warm clothes and a lawn chair = a days entertainment in that spot.
Mr. Deb

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 09:05 am:

Wow! What power and grace all in one shot! It gives me a shiver to look at it.

By Mel, Kansas (Mehollop) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 09:07 am:

I found the Malone's page a while back, and I've had this picture rotating in my screensaver. Last week, I felt it was time for a background change, and I changed my wallpaper to this photo. Talk about timing!

My sincerest thanks to Brian and Shawn for their wonderful photo ability and great eye for the perfect shot.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 09:26 am:

A really beautiful picture of Lake Superior. It does look like someone painted it.She can be so calm one moment & wild the next. But we love watching her.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 09:29 am:

This picture has got to be one of the most awesome pictures of the big lake I have ever seen in my entire life. The color of the water is breathtaking as well as the mood of the waves. I can feel this one.

By Therese (Therese) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 10:22 am:

Okay, who slipped a magnificent oil painting into Pasty.com? That is a truly lovely photo. Thanks; you've made my day!

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 11:01 am:

Mr Deb, wait a minute and I'll bring my chair and coffee, too. Pure magic and totally fantabulous Brian and Shawn! Thank you. Of course my print of this isn't near the colors in the photo. And I'm sure the photos are nothing like being there. How lucky for you being there (and with your camera). You're starting my week on the positive side. And I ended my last week with Deb's phone call!!!

By Melanie Mushrush (Melanie) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 11:20 am:

I have been checking this website daily for the last couple of years. It is fantastic. I lived in the UP back in the early '80's.
With the changes at pasty cam will we be getting snow updates as we have the past. People here in NW-PA just groan when we get a few inches. It makes me laugh and I say "Let it snow"
Melanie

By k j (Kathiscc) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 11:37 am:

Wow! Simply breathtaking.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 12:35 pm:

Anyone trying to surf the waves this year?? I know a few years back we were in Marquette for a Tech/Northern hockey game and when we drove along Lakeshore Drive there were some guys surfing the waves (and doing pretty well I might add)....

By Mike B. Wishin I was back in the Yoop (Mikeb) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 01:27 pm:

I am not often speechless, but that picture says it all. It's too beautiful for words!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 05:10 pm:

Isn't November the time of "Troubled Waters"? Isn't that the time of year that the "Edmond Fitzgerald" met her destiny? Lake Superior has the power to do whatever SHE wants.

By Backhomedon (Backhomedon) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 06:06 pm:

One of the most perfect pictures of a Lake Superior shoreline that I've ever seen. Great
photographers. Thanks for sharing them with us.

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 06:23 pm:

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 07:14 pm:

Powerful photo, gales of november for sure.

By Mk Schneider (Upboundeh) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 07:23 pm:

The Blue Gem looks like a Emerald. Great Photo!! Its almost like you're there.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 08:23 pm:

This is the month of the infamous "November Witch" that usually strikes the great lakes, just as it did November 10, 1975 when the Fitz went down.

And to think that some people can't (or won't) believe a lake can get rough enough to sink an ore carrier.......

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 08:45 pm:

when i first saw this pic i immediately thought it was taken by Steve Brimm - if you don't know who he is that is a huge compliment to your picture Mr. Malone !!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 08:59 pm:

Someone just told me today that with the weather equipment they have today they went back to the conditions of November 10,1975 & they said it was the worst storm ever on the Great Lakes. Even more powerful than the storm of 1913 that took I think 13 ships & 250 lives with it.
This year I will again be at the Whitefish Pt museum for the Annual Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Service.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 10:07 pm:

Cotton--I will be thinking of you on the 10th, and remembering
the Edmund Fitzgerald.

By Jan and Mike in Herscher (Janandmike) on Monday, November 6, 2006 - 10:41 pm:

WOW what a beautiful picture! The colors are outstanding-it does look like an oil painting.Have tried to get impressive wave shots for many years, but usually wrong spot, wrong time or no camera! Great photo!

By Sandy G (Artessss) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 12:07 am:

What a beautiful picture! It touches all your senses as great photography should. I have seen many great photos here and wondered what kind of camera people are using. Does anyone know or like to share? Thanks.

By Becca (Bec) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 06:32 am:

Yes, Presque Isle, methinks. The orange lichen on the back wall is a dead giveaway.

Astounding photograph, just beautiful. Thank you.

By Melissa (Melissa5876) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 08:17 am:

This photo is absolutely gorgeous!

By shawn (Twoyoopers) on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - 09:57 am:

hey, our photo's up! A sincere thank you to all the nice comments. Camera was a nikon n55- nothing special, and it was on neg film taken at the black rocks in Presque Isle.....I think there was some "divine intervention" on this one. Saw an inquiry if surfers were out, sure are, this time of year they are just getting started- we have numerous galleries and animations of great lakes surfers at http://www.lakesuperiorphoto.com

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - 04:41 pm:
