Who would have thought "the world's largest chain saw," parodies of Christmas songs and flannel chic would have turned into a business? The Pasty Cam featured just such a place eight years ago: Da Yoopers tourist trap on US-41 in Ishpeming.

And speaking of Christmas (how's that for a transition?), it is Christmas every month at The Hut Inn in Kearsarge. On the 25th of every month, we'll have Christmas music, decorations and menu specials (including a turkey dinner on October 25).

The forecast is feeling a lot like Christmas, too, with light snow predicted every day this week.

Anyhow, what's wrong with a flannel shirt or two?

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 09:43 am:

It's a flannel shirt kind of day here! High of 39 in the Flint area today!

By Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 10:17 am:

It's a month now since our movers packed us up in Adrian fr the
big move home to Esky where my wife and I grew up. We have
lots of boxes left to open, and we have also helped our son
move downstate to the Grand Rapids area. So lots of commotion
during this last month. One thing that keeps us grounded is our
daily walk along the bay to see the beautiful Little Bay de Noc
with its majestic opening to the south to the mighty Lake
Michigan. Such beauty and always there -- tho every day it
looks a little different. No snow yet in Esky which has also
helped us to get adjusted. Esky is not entirely as I expected. In
particular, the coal carriers have been a surprise. The north
shore has vast piles of coal. Where does it all go? Maybe to
power plants all over the U.P.? In between the coal carriers and
the ore boats, Escanaba is a lot busier port than I would have
thought. And, of course, all that iron ore coming in on trains to
the dock and, I suppose, coal moving out on trains means that
the air is filled with the sound of train horns all day long. This is
a busy town, andthat is not even without mentioning the area's
biggest industry, the big paper mill,
or all the auto supplier plants and the big tourist industry. In
short, this place is doing pretty well, and then it has all that
natural beauty to boot. Not a bad place to live, eh?.

Charles~
All towns should have people like you!
You appreciate the industry that sustains the area, along with the natural beauty.
There can be a nice balance between the two.
A good, upbeat outlook you have.
Makes me want to come down there to see Esky!

Good morning to you all...well it's almost afternoon in many places! So, what's the scoop on the UP? Longterm forecast? Looks like there are still leaves on some trees. I am heading back up to outside Houghton at the beginning of Nov. I'll do the new Houghton art show, Art Affair on Nov. 11th and am hoping to do a little belated yard work at the cottage. I didn't make it back in Oct. like usual so not sure what I'll be able to get done. Our son is at Tech so I can catch up with him too! Looking forward to the trek...just hope it's not all white when I get there!!!

Deb, Hope you're feeling better :) Did Ron make you some of his homemade chicken soup?

Charlesinadrian/CharlesinEscanaba: Time to change your screen name, eh ;) Glad to hear that your move went well, and you are enjoying your new hometown :)

Stix, Enjoy your trip home in November... hopefully when I move to da UP, I will be able to attend one of the art shows ;)
Farmer's Almanac is predicting snow showers for da UP, from November 8th-16th ;)
