The stately Laurium Manor Inn, framed by the changing leaves, made for a scenic shot eight years ago, using PastyVision.

This year, the snow and winds have taken care of moving almost all of the leaves from treetop to lawntop.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, October 16, 2006 - 09:05 am:

Morning all!! I see my (dream) house made it on here today ;-)

Massive amounts of rain in Houston overnight has caused a lot of flooding in the downtown area. Now I hear it's supposed to get bad again this afternoon with heavy rain. At this rate, I may have to roll the car over and paddle home......

By Joanie S. (Joanie) on Monday, October 16, 2006 - 09:32 am:

That is a dream house! Gonna be mine when I win the lotto, ha, ha! That's why it's a dream house, I'm dreamin'!

Just pulled three wood ticks off the dog and he gets Frontline Plus every month. Are they as bad up there as they are down here? Never noticed ticks on him when we vacationed up there. YUCK!

Has anyone seen the Snowflake stamp that is featured in the Daily Mining Gazette today? Just incredible. When I shoveled many feet of them in Trimountain, I reaaly loved them, but never did I imagine a Houghton snowflake would be a U.S. postage stamp!

Horses to sea was touching, love those animals! Jarmo sends pictures of the way it is in Finland. A real education on the way of life up there.

cool flake..how would you know its from Houghton?
There doesn't appear to be any words to that affect.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, October 16, 2006 - 07:16 pm:

I don't know, most of the worst rains hit by our place this time. Most of the back roads are flooded out NW of Houston...

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Monday, October 16, 2006 - 08:09 pm:

David,
You know it's from Houghton becuase the article says so. Maybe you missed the story. In it it states

"A snowflake from Houghton is among four in a set of holiday stamps released last week by the U.S. Postal Service.

Kenneth Libbrecht, a professor of physics at the California Institute of Technology, photographed the flakes.

Houghton’s turn came during Libbrecht’s 2005 visit to Michigan Tech University, where he gave a lecture on snowflakes at the Rozsa Center. During his two-week stay, he spent hours taking shots of snowflakes in downtown Houghton."

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Monday, October 16, 2006 - 08:27 pm:

I just bought some of the Snowflake stamps at my local post office on Saturday. Told the clerk that one of the images came from the U.P. where they know all about snow. He was quite impressed. They really do look "raht purty".

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, October 16, 2006 - 09:42 pm:

That stamp is so cool! I think David meant how would the postage stamp purchaser know it's a Houghton snowflake.

Good evening Folks,
With the chat about snowflakes it brings to mind a great website. You can make your own and its great for kids, grandkids and even bigs kids like us. Some of these are really beautiful... check it out. www.popularfront.com/snowdays

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Monday, October 16, 2006 - 10:06 pm:

Yep..Marsha hit the nail on the head :)
If it wasn't for the article, no one would know. It is cool that the flake is from Houghton, though.
Isn't that a weird thing to say, considering there are billions of those little ice things floating around all over the US and the world?
And billions is for sure an understatement.
