Eight years ago, the Pasty Cam featured an annual event -- a ride on the Isle Royale Queen for the residents of Still Waters.

Today in the Keweenaw, our warm (c'mon, it's all relative) temperatures continue with a high of around 70. Sounds like a good day to play hooky and enjoy the sunshine and colors.

Maija, concerning yesterdays Cam Notes.

If we can't poke fun at where we live and who we are then we live in a sad world. I grew up in the UP at the butt end of Finn jokes. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I work with poor kids. Well, we call them poor. They are all tri-lingual or better, smart as whips and think they have the world by the tail. They speak, English, French, Spanish, Creole, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. Some of them live in one room homes smaller than a freight container you would find on salties on Lake Superior. And, they do know what out houses are. When I tell them they aren’t “too bright” because they don’t know where Copper Harbor is they come back within hours with maps showing where it is and how to get there. And someday they will get there. They take me fantastic places with memories of their homelands and imagination that I could only dream about. They and their families are probably more American than any of us are. They are living the great American Dream and I am proud of them all.

Gracias por dejarme expresar.

Morning! Richard, it sounds like a fulfilling life.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 07:43 am:

People get upset at me for poking fun at things. I tell them, "I don't descriminate, I make fun of everyone equally, including myself"!! ;-)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 07:58 am:

Happy Birthday, Z-man! Let's enjoy his gallery in celebration! https://pasty.com/pcam/Z-man

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 08:06 am:

Capt. Paul, That's exactly my philosophy. And it's pretty much how I put it too. I poke fun at everybody! And I don't exclude me. And being nearly full blooded French, "I surrender". LOL

Happy Birthday Z-Man

FREIGHTER ALERT!!! I saw this on the Boatnerd channel this morning, a possible freighter arrival in Hancock!!!!
Algolake was heading to Goderich, Ontario today to load salt. Their destination is Sault Ste. Marie (probably Michigan), previous years they have done a split load for Hancock as well. Possible arrival Hancock late Wednesday or Thursday.

Let's see now, how does it go,,,,,, if you can't stand the heat,,,,,,,no, if you can't take it, don't???????? naw, do unto other's,,,,, Well, you know what I mean.........:)

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 09:08 am:

Dick fl: I see now what you meant for interpretation by us coppercountry addicts. I guess I didn't see the humor in your other post since I am so sensitive to prejudice in any form. Turns out your background is very similar to mine, and please forgive me if my comment was offensive.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 09:23 am:

Try being Scottish/Manx and French Canadian DebS, with a hint of Micmac thrown in. There's enough kindhearted ribbing there for a lifetime, especially being married to a Norwegian!! Needless to say, it's never a dull moment in our house ;-)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 09:30 am:

Scottish/Manx? Does that mean you're part cat?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 09:34 am:

I was curious about that part too Marsha. Be nice to the Norsk Capt. Paul, remember the Vikings.
Mr. Deb

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 10:57 am:

Good morning all, I am glad that the misunderstanding yesteday is taken care of. I had Amish neighbors at my cottage in Gladwin and had a lot of fun with them. I hope we can remember them today as they are good people, who just want to live their lives in the way that they have done for centuries. Dick, you are a lucky man to have the oppurtunity to help these children.

Langoman, how about this one: Was du nicht willst, das man dir tu, das tu auch keinem, was willst'n du?
O. Waalkes, after an old german proverb

(Sorry, couldn't resist) :D

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 11:21 am:

Talk about ethnic kidding. I thought I was 100 per cent Finn til upon further review I found both of my mother's grandmothers were Swedish. Write your own punch line here.....

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 12:54 pm:

Scottish/Manx refers to the part of my family that's from Scotland and the Isle of Man, which is where the Manx cat originated.

My wife always likes to say that the Vikings pilaged and plundered every civilization in that corner of the world; I like to remind her all, except the Scottish Highlands where my family was from.....

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 01:07 pm:

Was it because they were too lazy to climb the hills, or did Nessie eat them as they landed?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 02:24 pm:

Probably seeing a bunch of kilt wearin men throwing telephone poles and playing bagpipes was enough to scare off any mortal....

By Chuck K (Chuckclarkston) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 02:33 pm:

I am mostly Polish....so I take some kidding at work. On one of my previous cars I added a bumper sticker that said "I am Polish and proud of it. To make sure everyone believed me, I stuck it to the bumper upside down.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 02:41 pm:

The Isle of Man was a Viking settlement. The parliament of Man (called the Tynwald, I think), which still governs the Isle today, was set up by the Vikings. The Norse also set up the democratically elected parliaments of Iceland and Faroe Island. Together, these are the oldest parliaments still in existence and still governing today.

By Debra J McCumber (Debrajean) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 03:22 pm:

Hello everyone! I bragged on this site a few weeks back about getting a job in Iron Mountain and being able to fullfill one of my dreams - moving to da U.P. I just wanted to check in (and brag again) about how its even more wonderful then I could've ever expected. I have a comfy house with beautiful scenery, great neighbors, a fun job with very helpful co-workers, a wonderful fiance and dog and a new trail to hike almost every evening. Ahhhhh...I don't believe I have ever been happier. Smile everyone!!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 03:25 pm:

Chuck, My Precious is 100% Polish and proud of it, over the years she has taken a lot of kidding from me, I put a license plate on the front of her car proclaiming her ethicity and put it on upside down. Her friends would stop her and tell her about the plate, she would bend over and say it looks right to me. Great sense of humor. But I have been waiting for years for her to get me back.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 03:28 pm:

Right, Chuck, I love the MTU cams but these here on Pasty.net are my favorites, and it's so nice when they are live. I've been spoiled.....

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 03:30 pm:

Debrajean -- How absolutely wonderful!! I am so happy for you. You do like snow, right? :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 03:33 pm:

Thanks just ever so much Debrajean. It isn't enough that you stick the knife in, but you have to give it a twist too huh? LOL Seriously, I'm happy for you and still dreaming the dream of living in da UP.
Mr. Deb

By Nate (Nalwine) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 04:02 pm:

Hey Boo, Don't forget to smile yourself :)

By Debra J McCumber (Debrajean) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 04:07 pm:

Ert - Absolutely love the snow (snowmobiling, skiing, sledding, ice skating, ice fishing, etc)! I can't wait to see all of the seasons up here....I know every one of them will be beautiful in their own way. Thank goodness my dad is sending us up his two snowmobiles though....I love sledding down hills but I'm not much for walking back up! ; )

Thanks Mr. Deb - you'll get here sooner or later - the U.P. isn't going anywhere! : )

By Debra J McCumber (Debrajean) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 04:10 pm:

Nate - always smilin' now!! : )

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 05:00 pm:

Mikie, My friend Dawn has a charm on her necklace that says "Polish Princess". My boss made it up for her. People always laugh when they read it. LOL

By Becky Edwards (Becky) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 05:01 pm:

By FJL (Langoman) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 05:11 pm:

Hey Danbury, that's Greek to me...... Definition of a "Great Bagpipe player". One who know's how to play, but doesn't.......:)

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 09:06 pm:

Happy Birthday Z-Man! So now tell me, was the picture of cows on your birthday so bad after all? I think maybe all this talk of pilaging and plundering makes up for that! :-> Hope you had a great day!!

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - 09:09 pm:

Thanks to all of you that were wondering how the wedding went this past Saturday. It was absolutely great... perfect day with a beautiful bride, good looking groom and of course the crying Mother! :-) If I ever get caught up after being away for 8 days, I'll post a picture of the happy couple!
