Like standing above the storm, we get to watch one of the recent snow squalls as it makes it way around Brockway Mountain. Paul Roberts was on top of Brockway himself, watching the clouds drop that white shroud out over Lake Superior in the first shot. As the cloud moved east over Copper Harbor, Paul continued snapping away, until the snowy clouds had almost made a complete circle, with the last shot showing the cloud blanketing the land beyond Gratiot Lake, towards Mt. Horace Greeley. I have to admit, I'm not always geographically correct in my naming of the landmarks, so feel free to correct me if I've misidentified anything.

What awesome shots! As long as I lived there, I've never witnessed anything like this and would just love to. I guess we should feel lucky that when we are there, it's usually sunny. But I'd love to see the lake with huge waves during a storm (provided everybody was off of it and safe that is).

Wow!

By tom pare (Einosunshine) on Monday, October 30, 2006 - 07:31 am:

One of the elements that make the pictures so striking is the bright sunlight around the storm. Surely there's a poem that captures the scene better than my words... Any ideas? Any poets out there on Pasty Cam?

Every time I see Lake Superior shots, like this one, I get a big craving for the UP. I think the constant weather changes is what is so exciting about the UP. Beautiful pics!!

Hubby and I have been caught in a few of those during snowmobiling adventures. Spices the trip up a bit.

Why can't I go back and look at last week's photos? It says "page no longer available."

These photos bring back memories. I used to maintain the phone office near Agate Harbor and on the trip from Lake Linden to that office it was not unusual to drive through several of these.

Brockway Mountain certainly is a magical place. My wife and I were up there on one of those bright summer days about 3 or 4 years ago when I observed a fast moving fog rolling in off the lake. It was very dense and quickly swept right up and over the mountain. It was much cooler than the existing air so it actually dove straight down the south side of the mountain. AMAZING!!

(Off-Topic) on MTU Fund Webcam:
I just got to watch a freighter go through the Lift Bridge on Portage! What an awesome experience to be able to see a freighter moving under the bridge! I first saw the freighter on the Ripley cam, & then a few minutes later, it got to the Fund Cam. A big thank you to Dennis W. & the Mich Tech webcams, with motion!

By Dotsie Salani Stewart (Suna) on Monday, October 30, 2006 - 11:08 am:

Heard the Big Lake had some huge waves yesterday----up to 17 feet??? That would have been awsome to see in person. Scary!!

One thing I like about Michigan is that if you dont like the weather wait five min. :)Great pictures paul

By Ken Scheibach (Kscheibach) on Monday, October 30, 2006 - 01:45 pm:

Marianne, Thanks for the heads-up on the laker. I check MTU's webcams often and have never been lucky enough to see a freighter live. One nice thing about MTU's site is that they archive a photo every 5 minutes. Here are the links to the stills. Congrats, Paul on some great weather shots.

Thank you, Kscheibach, for the links. I was not aware of the archiving info. I knew they have timelapse, but I did not know that you could access the individual frames.

I'm gonna guess that's the Alpena. The freighter on the web cam links that is.

By Michele Maatta (Mrmaatta) on Monday, October 30, 2006 - 03:46 pm:

Darn, I heard the bridge horn too, and never did I think to run outside or peer out the window to catch a freighter so late in the season. (Am kicking myself now) Well great Brockway photos-- Love to see such "Superior" action. She's my favorite subject to photograph next to my dog!

Capt. Paul....check out What's Up for my question! I know one other reader wants to read your answer!
Thanks, Stix

I camped at Ft Mclain a few years back, stayed in a mini cabin for a few nights. Was attempting to light a coleman latern and noticed a lot of flashes on the cabin. My back to the big lake, I turned and walked out to the road, to see. To my surprise - there was one huge black cloud out in the lake, and lighting was flashing out of it. The following storm boasted sustained (so the radio the next day said) 70MPH winds! It was awesome, yet scary, a night to remember. That is some country.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, October 30, 2006 - 10:14 pm:

Ok Stix (and anyone else who wanted to know), the "short" answer to your Keweenaw basalt geology question is on the What'sUP page.....

I remember being on Brockway in the summer watching the rain storms come off the Lake and roll onto shore. Even in a place like the Keweenaw though, there is a pronounced "rainshadow" effect that takes place on the backside of the Brockways and all along the ridges. It is this reason that Calumet gets dumped on with snow while Lake Linden and Chassell are somewhat protected.

By tom pare (Einosunshine) on Monday, October 30, 2006 - 11:25 pm:

Maija: thanks for noticing my nickname! I was busy teaching all day and didn't check in until now before going to bed... Eino was my grandpa's name, and I look a lot like him. As you can see by my profile, I'm a Finndian on my mom's side. By the way, Mary Drew said she'd include her on the memorial page today/tomorrow: Marianne (Saari) Pare', who passed away 2 wks ago. I look like her, too...

I JUST MANAGED TO SEE YESTERDAYS PICTURE OF THE SNOW SQUALL. A FEW YEARS AGO, FOR VACATION, WE DECIDED TO JUST GO WHERE THE CAR TOOK US. WE HAD ALWAYS GONE SOUTH (USUALLY FLORIDA) SO WE HEADED NORTH ( HAD HEARD OF MACKINAC ISLAND). WE, BY THE GRACE OF GOD,ENDED UP IN THE UP. WOW, WERE WE SURPRISED, AMAZED AND IMPRESSED. BROCKWAY MTN. IS SMALL, AS MOUNTAINS GO, BUT HE WILL ALWAYS BE OUR FAVORITE MOUNTAIN CAUSE HE WAS SUCH A GREAT DISCOVERY FOR US. REALLY WISH I WAS IN COPPER HARBOR.
