Waves crashing over a breakwall make for some of the most exciting photos of Lake Superior. Whether you are at the Portage upper entry (McLain State Park or the township park across the way), the Portage Entry at Jacobsville, or any other breakwall on Lake Superior, the lake will not disappoint. We had high winds through much of the weekend, making for a photographer's delight.

Sorry about the goof there folks, my notes didn't make it into Dean's hands for today's photo and he improvised quite nicely. Here's what I had to say about the Photo:
During the recent weather event we experienced here in the Keweenaw, the winds were whipping and roaring for several days. So much so, that it even chased some freighters into harbors of refuge. For those of you that were either brave enough or crazy enough (depending how you look at it!) to venture to Lake Superior's shores, this is representative of what you saw. Roger Kangas was the brave photographer this time and if I'm not mistaken, this is taken from the Houghton side of the breakers that we featured a week ago from the air. Take a look at the color of the waves in the lower left of the photo. Now that's some churned up waters!

I think it's a Roger Kangas original.

Roger did take it. We were at Houghton Breakies a week ago Sunday. The wind was howling! You had to brace yourself to be able to stand on the breakwall.

The Lake was awesome! A steady stream of Breaker Sightseers went by my house, and I joined them. The view from the Freda bluff was equally amazing.

Hi The waves were of similar height in South Haven this past Saturday. At the South Haven pier, I saw a kayaker and what I first thought was a kayaker in distress but was instead a surfer. Also a gentelman amusing himself with a parasail--he was shooting back and forth in shallow water on a small waterski/specialized surfboard. The surfer & the parasail guy had on wetsuits
That was my roadtrip for the weekend, as we were not up for a color tour in the northern lower. We'd heard from a neighbor that there was a foot of snow, with higher drifts, in the driveway of our vacation home in Cheboygan as of Friday morning. If someone out there says "shoot, it was all melted by noon Saturday" I'll be really bummed. :^ (

That is a most wonderful photo, my wife and I had seen simular waves crashing over a breakwall when we were over by Port Austin (nice name eh ;) ) three weeks ago.

Waves like that would scare me as a kid. My family would ride out to the breakers to watch the lake "roll" and I would stay in the car----too scary. Lake Superior can be nasty---I was always afraid of big waves.

She's a mean old girl, that Lake Superior!

She may be mean, but she is glorious!
