It is never too early to get essential gear in shape for the season. Eight years ago, the Pasty Cam made its first snowblower sighting of the season. Cool nights and crisp days turn a Yooper's thoughts to winter. But it is a lot more fun to think about cross country skiing than a snowbound 6 am date with the Husqvarna.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 07:39 am:

I know that the snow wont be for a while but today will be a good day to make sure the Toro still works. Didn't use it last year at all.
Thanks Deb, grandson is here and he woke me up so Tim Oznanich should get half the credit with me for the early bird

Hey Dean, are you going to Woodbeck the Snowblower this year? I wish I lived where you need a snow blower!

By bill d-howellmi (Billdolkey) on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 01:08 pm:

Toni's/Laurium closes @ 5pm but I stopped in @
5:55PM Friday & got 2 pasties from the guy in the kitchen!(The red "open" sign was still in the window, I bet they forgot to flip it.)I ate 1 pasty driving down Sat., at a rest stop between
Gaylord/Grayling. It sure hit the spot.

Hey all,
A good piece on the Keweenaw and politics in today's Free Press. Go here to read it. I especially like the qoute about getting the news from Minnesota (WGGL, your home for Minnesota Public Radio.)

how does one "woodbeck" a snow blower - is it something we should all be doing??????

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 05:29 pm:

I think that the Detroit Free Press story stinks. It makes us Keweenaw County residents out to be a bunch of depressed "out-of-touch hicks"; and I don't recall ever having listened to a Minnesota radio station to get my news.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 06:05 pm:

If you've ever had your radio tuned to 91.1 or 92.7 which comes from Houghton, then you've listened to Minnesota Public Radio.

And as far as being depressed, out-of-touch hicks, I suppose one has to look at the perspective of the situation (and the writer). To one person, the Keweenaw is by far the best place on earth to live; clean air, friendly people, low crime, etc... To another, the Keweenaw probably seems like the end of the earth!! No huge shopping malls, no nightlife, nothing the big city has to offer... I think you get the picture.

So I say, let the big city think of the Keweenaw in this manner; we all know the real truth!! ;-) Besides, would you really want newswriters telling the world how wonderful the Keweenaw is, just have a million yuppies move in and destroy the unique culture that is the Copper Country???

I'm happy to see that, at present, we have 2 working cams. There was a time yesterday when not a one was working. :( I do hope BridgeCam is going to return; I go to the MTU site, but while I enjoy it being live, I like the angle on the one on here.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 06:38 pm:

Capt.Paul,I think it is already happening to some degree. I don't get up there every yr and each time I go I see more and more property being bought up with signs saying private. It upset me to see this happening on the way to Copper Harbor and other areas out there.

By Candy Goulette (Cagoulet) on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 07:46 pm:

No! Paul(Punvait), you don't want to Woodbeck your snowblower (or anything else, for that matter)!

As I understand it, to Woodbeck something is to cause it to malfunction, quit functioning or simply break. The word was coined either by or about our illustrious daily guide, Dean Woodbeck, and I believe (although Dean will have to confirm this) that the term came into existence after he had an unfortunate home repair situation.

Lol, where's Margaret when we need her???
