Eight years ago, the Pasty Cam took a look east from the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. The photo shows just a touch of color. This year, in some spots of the Keweenaw, the changing of the trees is well underway. There are pockets along US-41 near Copper Harbor approaching 40 percent. Peak color is expected the first week of October, which isn't that far away.

Leaves are making a start in turning colors here. Gas is $2.30 here in C.R. IA.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 10:26 am:

Good morning everyone :) No color change with the trees here on the southern shores of Lake Michigan yet. But I imagine that they will be changing colors soon enough, with the cool crisp nights, and all this rain. We're entering day number 4 of dismal rain. Has anyone seen the sun lately?
Susan, hope you enjoy your midweek, weekend :) I used to love having my weekend in the middle of the week. Now I just have it all week long ;)
Janie, Gas here in Indiana is $2.56 per gallon. I was tickled yesterday, to be able to fill up my truck (3/4 of a tank) for less than $50.

By Sunrise Side MI (Ilovelucy2) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 11:24 am:

Good Morning Leaf Peepers!!!
Yes we have that dismal rain here too. I have a hibiscus bush with one HUGE bud. The rain is not helping it open. Hope the Sun shines soon.
Gas here is $2.49 this am. need a fill up. Should I wait??? I have a slug bug named Snowball...Heehee. Everyone have a good day and enjoy Beautiful Mother Nature!!!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 12:27 pm:

Obviously, no leaves turning in Houston yet!! We're just happy when the temp falls below 70 at night now. I've seen gas here as low as $2.14 but is averaging around $2.25 or so. If you have one of the new cars that can burn E85 like I do, I filled up last Friday for $1.99 but I see that's down now to $1.86.

There is a great website out there called GasBuddy.com that will give you the lowest price for gas in your area. It even covers the Keweenaw; how great is that?? I have the address listed below for your viewing pleasure.......

At the risk of sounding like Pollyanna, I enjoy even these "dismal", rainy days! John Dee apparently feels the same way as evidenced by his latest journal posting. It's all part of fall, my favorite time of year!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 01:55 pm:

It sure would be nice to have more thorough gas price reporting for the UP!

Clearly the key to the GasBuddy site is for more folks to register as members, and for them to provide more and frequent input. Note that the gas prices posted on GasBuddy expire 24 hours after they're posted. Even if the price at your local station hasn't changed, if someone fails to report it anew, it will vanish 24 hours after it was last reported!

A quick snapshot of GasBuddy on or about 1:00PM EDT today shows the following meager results for the UP:

UP County City: number of reports
Alger Munising: 3
Baraga L'Anse: none
Chippewa Pickford: none, Sault Ste Marie: none
Delta Escanaba: 1, Garden City: 5, Gladstone: 2
Dickinson Iron Mountain: 6, Kingsford: none, Norway: none, * Westland: 24!
Gogebic Bessemer: 3, Ironwood: 7, Wakefield: 2
Houghton Hancock: none, Houghton: 1, Laurium: 1
Iron Beechwood: none, Iron River: none
Keweenaw None!
Luce Newberry: 2
Mackinac Cedarville: none, St Ignace: 3
Marquette Gwinn: none, Ishpeming: 2, Marquette: 1, Negaunee: 2
Menominee Menominee: 6
Ontonagon Ontonagon: 4
Schoolcraft Manistique: none
(* Westland - in Dickinson County? That one must be misplaced - the only Westland I'm aware of in Michigan is in Wayne County - or did I miss something?)
By
lz (Llamamama) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 02:05 pm:

Frnash, you can't be wrong. No Westland in Dickinson County that I know of and I was raised there! With 24 reports at that - must now be a megolopolis!

I am on the road and have been for some time. Gas prices around Chicago seem to remain the highest. $2.13 in Indy yesterday. Hi to all my PR buddies and hope to be home for awhile by October. Better get moving again. Paris, (Illinois that is) next stop.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 02:14 pm:

Well, you didn't really expect EVERY gas station in the UP to be listed, now did you?? Besides, it's better than nothing!! :P

Oh and btw, there are 4 listings for Keweenaw Co. listed in the "highest" prices category; big surprise there.....

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 03:21 pm:

Capt. Paul (Eclogite):
"...you didn't really expect EVERY gas station in the UP to be listed, now did you?"

Although that would be nice, it's also not likely to happen! - I was, however, hoping to promote a bit more active participation among the UP residents. I'd help but it's a bit hard to do from Phoenix (AZ, not MI :-))!

"...there are 4 listings for Keweenaw Co. listed in the "highest" prices category..."
So there are... but 'tis strange how there were no reports from Keweenaw at all in the county-by county-listing, also no listing for Copper Harbor by ZIP Code (49918)!?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 03:28 pm:

Lol FRNash, what, your not going to be Gasbuddy's Keweenaw correspondant? ;-)

I think it's odd as well that prices appear in one section but not another. When I first looked at Keweenaw Co. this morning I saw Port Huron listed and had to laugh....

two fish are swimming along and run into a concrete wall. one turns to the other and says "dam"

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 03:50 pm:

Paul, Liked your dam joke. Other Paul, liked your first post thanks, showed all the gas stations in Berkley.

By Robert - CO (Halork) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 04:13 pm:

Re: Gasbuddy. The reason there are no listings for Keweenaw county is that they have no Keweenaw County towns on their location list on MichiganGasPrices.com. That doesn't mean that people don't report them, though, you just have to know what town to query for. I have emailed the Gasbuddy admins to have some more UP locations added to the MichiganGasPrices.com site.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 04:19 pm:

Re: Gasbuddy - I have also emailed GasBuddy with the following suggestion:

Given Michigan's distinctive geography, and the lack of really significant "metro areas" in the Upper Peninsula, it certainly would be handy to have "Upper Peninsula" itself as a distinctive entry among the "City / State / Province / County / Parish / Borough" entries for Michigan, and as an entry in the drop-down dialog box for searches by "Area" for Michigan.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 04:40 pm:

Yesterday when I was in Gwinn it was $2.68. They are always higher than Marquette by about 4 cents. They really goudges us in this area. Gas prices the other day in Baraga were $2.41.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 05:16 pm:

wow, we're really doin good down here, then: 2.34. Never in recent history been lower than Baraga!

Sorry, but the light bulb will change itself when it is ready.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 - 05:37 pm:

On my way home from work this afternoon I noticed gas was now at $2.25 here in Cedar Rapids, IA.. Went down a nickel while I was at work, yahoooo!
