Today's offering from eight years ago: a leisurely paddle across Lake Fanny Hooe in Copper Harbor.

There were a couple of questions yesterday about The Hut. We'll have photos once we get the place cleaned up. So far I haven't seen thimbleberry torte on the menu, but maybe our chef can have his arm twisted when the little berries are in season

Just a little note:

Space Weather News for Sept. 7, 2006
http://spaceweather.com

BIG FULL MOON: Tonight's full moon is the closest and biggest of 2006. Why? The Moon's orbit is lopsided: one side is closer to Earth than the other. When the Moon turns full on Sept 7th, it will be on the close side, making it seem a bit wider than usual. Look for the extra-wide Moon rising in the east at sunset--very pretty.

Morning everybody! Beautiful day here in MN but turning colder overnight. Sigh! I guess fall is arriving.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 08:34 am:

Mr. Bill, How interesting about the large moon expected tonite! This morning at 5 a.m. I mentioned to my hubby as we were feeding the horses how big the moon seem. Must have been giving us a sneak-peak of tonite's large moon expected!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 08:50 am:

Additionally, we're going to see a partial (19%) lunar eclipse tonight at 2051. Not so the UP, I guess.

By Bob Gilreath (Bobg) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 09:00 am:

I ref'd the late soccer game last night, it was dusk when we finished and two of us just stood there and watched this HUGE moon rise above the horizon.

Unfortunately i don't take my camera with me when I ref ;-)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 10:43 am:

Good morning everyone :)
Thanks for the info on the large moon Mr. Bill...I'll have to be sure to take time to sit outside on my deck tonight and watch for it.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 10:52 am:

I couldn't believe the size of the moon this morning when I left for work; it was huge!! I'll have to watch for the moon again as it's supposed to be clear and dry in East Texas tonight....

By Cotton (Cotton) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 12:56 pm:

A full moon hey!!! Isn't it said that people act out on nights of a full moon? Is it going to be like a Harvest moon? That is beautiful!! The color is spectacular.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 01:39 pm:

"Isn't it said that people act out on nights of a full moon?"

Lunatics!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 01:57 pm:

What are you *twitch* saying Cotton, that people *twitch* act a might stranger during *twitchtwitch* a full moon than at other times?? ;-)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 02:08 pm:

Frank, Does Lunatic mean controlled by the moon? Just asking since I think that Lune is latin for moon.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 03:08 pm:

Actually Mikie, it's "luna". It's also the name of the goddess of the Moon, and is the counterpart of the Greek goddess Selene.

By paul (Pungvait) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 03:17 pm:

may i put in a plug for the 4th annual Harvest Days tractor show at Keweenaw Berry Farm saturday and sunday, all day - free admission

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 03:24 pm:

Thanks capt. my latin hasn't been used in about fifty years.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 03:49 pm:

The word "Lunacy" meaning "insanity" which comes from the Latin word "moon". The influence of the moon & behavior has been called the the "Lunar Effect" or "Transylvania Effect". The "Harvest" moon is in September & sometimes in October so i found out it is not tonight.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 05:18 pm:

Capt. Paul (Eclogite) I thought the same exact same thing last night and this morning, but we did have some thunderstorms last night. It didn't hamper the big beautiful moon.

By Therese (Therese) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 05:34 pm:

Look at http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html for a lovely photo of the gibbous moon in a way never seen with the eye. It will be my background for a few days.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 07:25 pm:

Cotton, I had no idea you were so into this stuff. I also had no idea when the harvest moon is. Thanks for all the info guys. It's been interesting reading all of these posts. I love a full moon. I, like Sur5er, will sit out on my deck and watch it tonight. Just charged my digital camera so I will see what kind of a picture I can get. Hopefully we don't all go looney, eh?

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 07:43 pm:

My mother, an O.b. nurse for all her nursing careeer, said the old phrase "full moon, full house" usually was true.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 09:15 pm:

Have you guys seen it? It is absolutely marvelous! I can't wait until it's a little higher in the sky. We got a picture, but it just looks like an orange ball. Makes me mad. Wish I had a better camera. Oh well, maybe in 1/2 hour or so.

By BJmilford (Bjmilford) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 09:23 pm:

I heard on WJR this morning that the full moon in September is called the "corn" moon.....October is the "harvest" moon.

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 09:49 pm:

I firmly believe the full moon causes folks to act a bit "different".....think about the force the moon has on tides (water), and our bodies are 90% water - so the moon is pulling on the water contents of our bodies and sometimes people act strange when the fluids and electrolyte are out of kilter. Go figure!!!!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, September 7, 2006 - 10:48 pm:

When we came out of our church board meeting tonight the moon was low over the trees in the east. Wow!! Beautimous! Jack Horkheimer says the Harvest moon is in October this year. And, yes, it is some closer so it appears larger. But, *twitch*, it don't *twitch* bother us *twitch* none. ;o)

By Danbury (Danbury) on Friday, September 8, 2006 - 03:03 am:

Referring Capt. Paul on the main site:
If I were surrounded on the streets by people driving on snow they're not used to, skidding around at 50, I'd definitely consider calling in sick, too. Not because of the snow, though. :)

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, September 8, 2006 - 06:31 am:

The moon was a gorgeous sight here in Toronto--both last night
and this morning. When you have a dog to walk, you have extra
chances to look at the stars and moon--especially as the days get
shorter.
