There are so many modes of transportation that can be used to view the constantly changing fall colors here in the U.P. But I think Bob Gilreath has captured one of the more peaceful ways. That's his daughter Sarah, taking a break from paddling along on Emily Lake, so she can enjoy the surrounding colors and the quiet of the day. You can almost smell autumn in the air with this shot.

Bob i couldn't agree with you more, kayaking is great and everyone can join in on the fun too. I am sure with all the colors right now every river will be a beautiful float.

How much do Kayak's cost?
By Julia (Julia) on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 - 11:48 am:
Allen, A small 1 man kayak ranges from about $300-$500. A 2 man is about $800-$1000 from what I have seen in stores. They don't come cheap unless of course you find a used one.

Also, there's foldables (tm?), like Klepper (german make that I think is available in the US). We have one in the family that admittedly needs a new skin these days. After thirty years of use and bad storage, that's fair. Made some wonderful trips in that boat.

Coming to the Keweenaw the week of Oct. 8. Where can we rent kayaks?
By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 - 01:43 pm:
Steve, You might need snowmobiles on Oct.8, you know how it is in the CC, hope you can find a boat to use.

Thanks for the kayak rental locations!
Yes, I know all about snow in October. Came up one year on Oct. 1, was 82 degrees in Calumet (1989, I think). Colors were great and I went on an awesome bike ride. They forecasted snow for that night and I refused to believe it. The next morning there was about an inch of slush on the ground on the sidewalks in Houghton. Went hiking around Central & Mandan with large fluffy flakes falling around me...
Cancelled another trip about 5 years ago due to a snowstorm 1st week in October.

Steve, I remember that snowstorm. My daughter and son-in-law were here from WA. The Sat. they arrived, it was actually hot. A week later, they left in two feet of heavy, wet snow. Don't need that again.

Two years ago CMX was closed just after Columbus day. Had to take a bus to Marquette and wound up in San Francisco instead of San Jose. We were on the plane when they shut down the airport! Oh well, welcome to the CC.
