This is the time of year when the pop-ups, travel trailers and fifth wheels make their last hurrah before the Labor Day lull. Eight years ago, Pasty Cam photographer Jonathan Hopper said he believes these road warriors almost outnumber the birch trees and cedars in the Copper Country.

Alright, I got my post up there right after the birds came up and it's not there. Yesterday somebody had a post up there before the pictures and they got the early bird. I'm so frustrated! Oh well, morning all.

Just watched a boat pass thru the bridge on MT Motion Cam. That was fun. Would that have been the boat to Isle Royale?

Eugenia, I didn't see or hear the boat. But knowing the schedule of the Ranger, I am sure it was headed out to Isle Royale today. Might be little rough out on lady Superior today, it has been quite windy. The Ranger usually comes back through on Wednesday between 3-3:30, depending on the weather. Watch tomorrow and maybe you will see it return.

Guess you will need that t-shirt.

I know how Deb feels. There is something about starting the morning with the early bird designation. And sometimes the cyber world is just a mystery unto itself. So keep trying, Deb!
On another note, does anyone have any good suggestions for books either set in the UP or about the UP? history, fiction, whatever

Kathy, I believe there's a website about books (or is it movies?) set in MI. I'll see if I can find it.

Kathy.."Anatomy of a Murder" by Robt Traver (pen Name) (sp)...fiction based on a true story written by Judge John Voelker. The murder took place in Big Bay outside of Marquette. A movie was made in Marquette in 1957-58 starring Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick...there is lots of information at the Thunderbay Bar in Big Bay. I had the pleasure of meeting Judge Voelker when he came to Escanaba. He came to eat dinner at the House of Ludington one day each week. He played two tunes on the hotel piano.."Stardust" and "Deep Purple" ..we sang along.....very fine gentleman..

The "Sweater Letter" by Dave Distel is a book you won't want to put down. I read it in a day. It's a true story about a husband who in 1992 killed his wife & tried to make it look like a deer hunting accident. It happened in Ontonagon County but they lived in Marquette County in Harvey just outside of Marquette. Pinnacle True Crime published the book in paper back & named it "Hunt to Kill". It is availbale in book stores for $6.95. You can still purchase "the Sweater Letter" in hard cover but you'll pay over $2O.

Mary Lou, I've met Gordon Lightfoot in person several times & he is also a very nice yet humble man, just like Judge Voekler I'm sure.

Quick question: I'm working on this court case, and I just wondered...since you got the legislation through to protect the Edmund Fitzgerald site from divers, how many state legislators did you end up having contact with? Which were your favorites? Just need some inspiration here with this case. Thanks :)

Well the only brush with someone famous that I have had was that I met Clay Aiken last summer at his show at meadowbrook. Oh, and I also have met Steve Yzerman. Although I think that Gordon lighfoot would be neat to meet.

THERE IS MORE TO LIFE than getting the early bird. But it's fun to be first. The world doesn't come to an end if we're not though. I think a lot of us wait for the picture to come up so we can post. It's half the fun.

Pennie, My hubby sent a Steve Yzerman hockey card to him one year and for my birthday he autographed it and sent it back. I think that was something big, because he's not big on autographs. So I have my autographed Yzerman hockey card. I think hubby met Gordie Howe. We have pictures of him up close and personal. And that adorable Clay Aiken, you lucky gal.

Sur5er-- I met Walter North when he was a senator from Michigan, Bart Stupak, Mike Prusi, several key senators & representatives from Michigan while I was working on the legislation to forbid photographs of bodies being taken from shipwrecks in Michigan waters. I appeared before a senate committee & a representative committee to get the legislation through. I also heard from the Governor Engler & got a letter from our president at the time, Bill Clinton. I met with several Canadian & American governmeent officials while working on Fitzgerald protection. Gordon Lightfoot also helped me. And he loved the pasties I brought to him & his band a couple of times. He's coming to Escanaba next month & again I will go back stage to visit with him. So try to have as much contact as you can with government officials as you can. If I can be of help, let me know.

Wow, how impressive...and a letter from the President to boot. You go girlfriend :) Your work is amazing...and an inspiration to me. It's incredible how your voice made such a drastic change in the laws for shipwrecks.

On this end, Senator Lugar...can definately understand why he made the top ten list of US senators...he is outstanding. Received an 'atta girl' letter from him, which I have framed in my office. Congressman Visclosky...a compassionate go getter. Governor Daniels; officals from the US DOT; officials from the DOJ (received an 'atta girl' letter from one of the officials); and an official from the federal goverment in Alaska, who had to call me to see what all the hoopla was about with Indiana courts court ordering truck drivers to violate Federal DOT laws.

Geez you gals, I thought I was a big wig for meeting Jesse Ventura. He was our governor and had a cottage around our area. Came to our town every 4th of July. He's really a very nice guy and was a pretty good governor.

Hubby has met Ted Lindsay, former Red Wings captain. Great hockey player. (As you can tell, he's more into meeting hockey players.)

I have shaken hands with Keith Urban, great country music performer. Was 1 of about 100 people who got to hear a private concert and do the meet and greet thing. It was great. Oh what fun.

Sur5er- Thank you for the compliment you gave me. You didn't have to do that but I appreciate the fact that you did. It's nice to receive them.

I'm so impressed with you guys' activities and the famous people!All I can say is Gordon Lightfoot is up there with Neil Diamond. A few years ago I worried G.L. wasn't long for this world. He looked awful and figured his lifestyle was taking him down. Enjoy the concert, wish I were going with you!

You're more than welcome...and I believe that you deserve recognition for everything you have done for others. I have always been touched by the Edmond Fitzgerald tragedy...your work in getting the bell from the wreck raised and placed in the Whitefish Point Museum...and your tireless effort in obtaining legislation to protect the site of the Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck and other shipwreck sites.

I always admired you...always wondered what had happened to the surviving family members of the crew that was lost on the Edmond Fitzgerald. And then, when I am in the midst of fighting a cause in Indiana, I not only meet you...but am proud that you consider me to be one of your friends ;) Thank you :)

Hey guys, hubby and I met Hugh Bishop. For those of you who don't know who that is, he wrote "The Night the Fitz went down". Got to talk to him for quite a while at a Lake Superior magazine anniversary in Duluth. It was so great! Anyway, he died now so I'm really glad he autographed his book personally to us. It was great to meet him.

Kathy P. Look into mysteries by Steve Hamilton. He sets the stories in the Paradise area. I have most of them in paperback. They are good.

Cheryl, I ditto that. I have met you personally and I guess I would have to say that I have met another personality in Cheryl. Way to go girl! You're an inspiration to all of us.

Sur5er, I have the privilage of both knowing Cotton and my brother John Du Long who has written many different articles and books about the CC Cotton your godfather and Burl Ives were buddies and lived by each other in Florida during the sixties.

I babysat for Gordie Howe's kids, and Al Kaline's grandkids went to the school where I was a counselor. They were just as wonderful people as he is.

Kathy P., One of my favorite mystery writers is Nevada Barr. All her books take place at National Parks. The first book of hers I ready took place on Isle Royale. I've since read her entire collection. If you have visited a lot of National Parks she makes for a very good read.

Cotton, I have a Edmund Fitzgerald documentary with an interview of your mother expressing her emotions of the news shortly after of the ship's sinking. I could feel her pain in my heart.

Janie T, My Mom & Dad were divorced. That had to be my step mother who was interviewed right after it happened. She was blonde. Otherwise it must have been me in one of the interviews I did. She & Dad were in the midst of a divorce but she did play the grieving widow! Havn't seen or heard from her since 1976.

Cotton, I'm sorry, it was your step mother then, she had blonde hair. I do have another documentary with you in a couple scenes as well as an interview with Mrs Michael Armagost(sp?) and Bruce Hudson's mother. That tragic incident even made the news clear down here in Eastern Iowa since that same storm system socked us with a lot of snow.
