Eight years ago, the traveling Pasty Cam stopped at the welcome center/rest area just southeast of Marquette on US-41.

The silent auction to benefit Still Waters continues through Saturday online (and Sunday in-person).

Good Morning from North Carolina !

By Carole (Carole) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 07:29 am:

The above rest area/welcome center is a must to stop at when going to or thru Marquette. This past May there was an eagle up in the tree, on the bluff, across the highway from the rest area. Really was awesome to see.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 07:41 am:

Morning! I've never been to that particular rest stop...always stop in Ironwood....

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 07:59 am:

Morning All!

My two Yopper uncles had a running joke whenever they headed below the bridge. They would always complain about their tax dollars being used to fund the "expensive" rest stops in the Lower. They especially took offense to the swimming pools many of the rest stops were, according to them, being equipped with!!!

Always nice to see the great rest stops north of the bridge!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 08:06 am:

That rest stop is not only great to relax along the Lake, but across the road is some neat geologic formations. Harvey Quarry has a huge fault cutting the bluff face, and just north of the bluff are some stromatolites that are much older than the ones on Dan's Point. There are some other features there as well if one is interested, but those are the two that geologists look at...

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 08:27 am:

Wow, a rest stop that I have missed in my UP travels...being a girl and all, that is hard to believe, eh ;)

Llamamama, Jim had eaten all those blueberries by the time he got home. Then he had the nerve to expect me to make him some of my pasties that I had gotten from the UP last month. Yeah right...eating all those blueberries on me and then expecting a nice warm pastie in exchange. That's okay though...I hid the Toivo and Eino's pasty sauce from him and told him I had used the last of it on my pasty...so he had a pasty without ;)

By Carole (Carole) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 09:06 am:

Capt Paul: On top of those geologic formations, on a tree top is where the eagle was. What a sight!!!

harborage: refuge

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 09:45 am:

It's nice to have the modern rest stops across the UP now and also the numerous passing lanes. There are also good rest stops at Naubinway and Seney. But better still is to just go to the Seney visitor center when I can talk my husband into it, instead of the rest area around the corner. When you're in a hurry, but need to stretch your legs, the visitor center has bathrooms and you can take a quick walk around the outside of the building to view the ponds and wildlife, which may be just a chipmunk sometimes, but still fun.

Sad news, but I read in the obituary's in The Daily Mining Gazette of the passing of Shirley Kauppi, is this Shirley of the King Copper Motel in Copper Harbor? Our only choice of place to stay when hubby and I come up.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 10:22 am:

Capt Paul...is the fault directly across the road from this rest stop/information center?..I am often there and would enjoy knowing more about the geology of the area since you pointed out how unique it is.....(I know nothing about the subject.)...I love the Marquette area....just went to two concerts over the weekend presented by the Superior Festival Orchestra of Marquette. They were great!!!...they did "Mozart's Requiem Mass with Chorus" ....Chorus made up of Upper Penninsula singers.....Beautifull!!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 10:22 am:

Janie,
Check Sharon's website: www.aviewfromthefield.com
and click on 'journal'. That was Sharon Smith's friend and the owner of the King Copper Motel, Shirley Kauppi who passed away :(

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 10:30 am:

Thankyou Sur5er! I was wondering if it was Shirley, such a saddness! Shirley always made sure your stay was a wonderful time, she was a jewel of a lady! The King Copper won't be the same!

Pasty Cam folks: I know that Mary Lou and I have had our differences. But Mary Lou needs some recognition here for a wonderful patriotic editorial she wrote for The Daily Mining Gazette, in response to another editoral slamming not only our men and women who are fighting for our freedoms...but also the American flag.

Mary Lou, as the mother of a step son who just recently entered the Marines, my heartfelt thank you for speaking out on behalf of our military personnel. I know that your article will deeply touch those who have served in the military, and Pasty Cammers who currently have, or have had family members in the military...and those who unfortunately lost members of their families while serving to protect the American way.

The website for Mary Lou's article is:

If you go to Sharon's homepage and click on gallery, you'll see a picture entitled "View from the loft" (of her house). Shirley is in that picture.

I'll be UP tomorrow!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 10:56 am:

Mary Lou, Way to go, we need more people thinking the way you do and having the courage to respond to the negative people who wont support our troops or our nation.

Afternoon All.
(Marylou) For my Dads Merrills Marauders WWII (todays Army Rangers) and myself, Vietnam era a heart felt, 'HooooRah'.
Enjoy the day everyone!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 12:40 pm:

MaryLou:
If you are parked at the rest stop at the south end, look across the road and a little south and you should see a large hill or rockface. The face is greenish in colour with a white stripe down the side. On the left side of the stripe is that fault. In my UP Geology gallery, I have a fantastic shot of that face. It is pic #35 described as "Fault in Harvey Quarry". There are some MTU students in front of it for scale....

There are so many interesting geologic features in and around Marquette I would need an entire day just to list them ;-)

Mary Lou,

I enjoyed your letter to the editor immensely. Very nicely done.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 09:35 pm:

Mary Lou received an email from a Marine Capt. that read her letter to the editor, so she's sharing it with us all. Since I don't have his permission, I'm not including his name, but am including the picture he sent her...read on:

Dear Mrs Curtin,
I hope this is the right Email address, I looked up the name and town in Google. If it is not, please disregard this email,..

I am a deployed Marine on board the USS Peleliu, and a Yooper as well. I have been following the banter back and forth in letters to the editor in The Daily Mining Gazette, specifically the letter you have published in the August 9th. I would like to say "thank you". Along with myself, there are 2 other 'known Yoopers' in this squadron alone (I am from Hancock, and the other 2 are from Menominee and Iron Mountain), and most likely many more on board this ship. With the modern internet world, we do follow the postings by warm individuals who can understand the importance of what we do. We all appreciate the community support that we have gotten from small town America. It helps make our time away from our families and loved ones more bearable. And don't worry, we tend to laugh at the ignorance of those on the other side of the argument. I have enclosed a picture of my aircraft over my home (for the past 5 1/2 months). The picture was taken over the Persian Gulf while we were offloading supplies to a Camp in Kuwait.

Thank you for your support.

Yooper Capt. Aircraft
Thank you Yooper Marine Capt. and Mary Lou!

Dear Marine Capt. THANKS FOR DOING WHAT YOU DO!

By Cotton (Cotton) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 10:24 pm:

It takes all kinds to make the world go round. Everyone is entitled to their opinion in this country. Right?!!! But I think we all agree "God Bless America"

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 10:32 pm:

Captain Yooper,Thanks from an old veteran

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 11:18 pm:

AMEN and Thank You! to all the men and women out there in harm's way. You are in our prayers all the time.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 07:35 am:

Capt Yooper.....It saddens me to know that you and our other Yooper sons and daughters are aware that one of your neighbors had such a negative opinion regarding our "Flag of the United States of America". I know our Freedom of Speech is an important right, however, so is our reverence for our beloved flag, which has been a symbol of our love of our country and it's values. It symbolizes everything we hold dear, including our right to free speech. Generations of fallen Yoopers and other heros have died defending home and country and came home wrapped in our beloved flag. Some never made it back home and are at sea and left in foreign lands with only the flag to connect them to their homeland..... with Love, Gratitude and Pride know almost all of your neighbors feel the same, especially those with loved-ones who serve or have served. Keep safe. Thank you for your kind response. Please tell your Yooper mates we said "God Speed"
