Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 06:56 am:

Regular Pasty Cam visitors will recognize this as another outstanding capture by Z-Man. Of course I'm referring to the picture and not the actual bird, since this one was photographed while Z-Man was laying on the highway. Once he had his shots, he then gently prodded the bird off the road, so that it would have a better chance of survival. Z-Man figures this is a young bird, perhaps even fresh out of the nest, but he isn't giving us any hints as to an ID on this one. Let's see how many amateur birders are out there to take a stab at identifying it. Notice I said AMATEUR, so that excludes all you Northern Michigan Birding folks! :-> So who can name that bird?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 06:59 am:

What happened to my post? It's gone!!!!!!!!! The birds were there and I commented on them and now they're gone. Weird!

Deb--I didn't see a post when I uploaded Mary's comment this morning. Not sure what happened. -- Dean Woodbeck

lovely feathers

he's a predator (she?)

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 07:00 am:

Looks like he's barely got enough feathers to crash land from a high nest. Are those white feathers on his head from fright?

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 07:10 am:

pulchritudinous:stunning

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 07:17 am:

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 07:48 am:

Looks like a little red-tailed to me......

By Joe (Jhurl) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 08:22 am:

This bird looks like a baby Rough Legged Hawk

By Hilarie Alwine (Halwine) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 08:29 am:

I think it's a baby bald eagle! Bald eagles don't get their white head until later. And those bright yellow legs make me think eagle aswell.

By anita king (Anita5) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 08:54 am:

I agreeing that it is a bald eagle.

By anita king (Anita5) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 08:56 am:

excuse my structuring of the above sentence. I was thinking faster than I was typing.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 09:10 am:

I have to go with the hawk family.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 09:48 am:

It's definitely NOT an eagle.

By Nate (Nalwine) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 09:51 am:

Definately a red tailed hawk. The young are born completely white. And then over the next month turn darker. It looks like its still sheding some of its white feathers and is probably about 2 months old. (just a guess based off of what I learned last year when working with the scouts on their bird merit badges :) )

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 11:30 am:

Don't we just love those two little tufts of white on top, like horns:>

By Clara Huhak (Mugga) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:07 pm:

My husband thinks he looks like a chicken hawk.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:07 pm:

Hi
It would be helpful if there was a clear shot of the tail; but, based on the markings that I see, I would say it was an immature Cooper's Hawk. The picture of the immature Redtailed Hawk in my Peterson's shows a white patch of breast feathers, whereas this hawk is streaked.

By Renee O (Rozanich) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:27 pm:

Whatever he is, he's adorable!

By The (Zman) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:36 pm:

Not an eagle or a hawk, try again!

By Monica Lee (Islandantique) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:43 pm:

Looks like a Peregrine Falcon.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:43 pm:

Is it a horned owl?

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 12:55 pm:

Young Merlin? A Falcon

Z-Man did it again! What amazing photos he comes up with. I think it's some type of hawk.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 01:47 pm:

Beautiful bird. I certainly hope it made it to safety.

By Joe (Jhurl) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 02:03 pm:

It is also Know as a Pidgeon Hawk.

By john mich (Johnofmi) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 02:22 pm:

It's a chickadee getting ready for Halloween

By Pam Gill (Plynng) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 02:41 pm:

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 03:04 pm:

Its a wet sparrow hawk aka American kestrel

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 03:05 pm:

molting or mange?

By Clara Huhak (Mugga) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 03:11 pm:

I looked it up and it looks exactly like a Merlin Falcon.

Editor's note: Take note about 8 posts above this one ~ Z-Man awarded the Master Bird IDer award to Richard Barclay for correctly identifying this bird as a Merlin. Thanks for participating in the ID quiz and thanks Z-Man for providing us with the subject matter!

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 07:10 pm:

Z-man, please tell us that it managed to fly away......

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 09:07 pm:

Dean, I had just said that it was funny how they can manage to be so cute and so ugly at the same time. When they look wet they're not the most attractive things, are they?

By k j (Kathiscc) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 09:36 pm:

I don't think we have those in Illinois. I want to be in the U.P.

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 09:44 pm:

If it's a Merlin Falcon then what is a Maltese Falcon?...and what ever happened to Peter Lorre?

By k j (Kathiscc) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 09:59 pm:

Deb S.- This is the time of year when they molt. Birds can get lice and mites, but I think mammals get mange.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - 11:44 pm:

A maltese falcon is a statue, or a movie

By Danbury (Danbury) on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 - 02:38 am:

Or a ship, named after the aforementioned, built by Perini Navi, with a rather unique rigging.

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 - 09:30 am:

I think it's a young merlin, not yet fully fledged. You can see down and immature feathers on the legs and breast. One site said they nest on the ground so it may have gone walk-about on a dewy morning! On the other hand it may be an adult molting and we're getting a peek at its unders - the wing feathers don't look long enough, either.
