A rainbow is always something special to see, but spot one at dawn, seemingly exploding from the depths of Lake Superior, and it's really spectacular! David Woon was able to capture this shot of an early morning spectacle of colored brightness and thank goodness he did. For otherwise we may not have ever seen this exact rainbow, even if standing right beside David. Did you know that no two people view the same rainbow, even when standing side by side? That's right, even your own two peepers see different distributions of color when viewing these variegated bands in the sky. In that case, I guess you could say your eyes aren't seeing eye to eye!

The silent auction supporting Still Waters continues until Saturday (online) and Sunday (in person at the open house).

Looks like our lovely Upper Peninsula is the real "Pot of Gold"..at least it seems like that to me...It is beautiful down here in the deep south of the UP as well.......sun is big and bright over our lovely lake Michigan....reporting from Escanaba... should be another beautiful day.

Oh my, how beautiful! What kind of berries are those growing on the rocks? Don't look like thimbleberry leaves, that's for sure but do look like the berries.

I think they're rose hipps among other plants. I've got some out front right now and they're ripening to that color!

They can be dried and steeped for tea, are high in vitamin C, taste rather bland. I prefer the Labrador Tea leaves (dried) for a local tea, myself.

pennie....where do you stay??..in the Copper Country??...hope to meet you and Abby one year. I won't make it back to Lake Linden till Sept.....The last few days the weather has been absolutly perfect...and no bugs!!!

Mary Lou, thank you for the wonderful invite but we are staying in St.Ignace. We had planned of going a little higher up but because of the high gas prices we wont be able to go up much past Whitefish point. I am anxious to go to whitefish/paradise on Sunday the 20th because of the blueberry fest. I am hoping to get some and go back to the cottage and make a nice cobbler of pie. :)

Here's a site with info on rose habitat and recipe's for rose hipps. It could be they like places where there isn't a lot of competition for sunlight. Not many tall plants on rocks and their thorny stems probably help hold debris for nutrients that their shallow root system can use.
