Unless you make the drive along US 45 between Bruce Crossing and Paulding on a regular basis, you might be saying, "I've seen this building somewhere in my travels, but just can't place where it is." It's actually the Maple Grove Town Hall, est. in 1904. From the looks of this photo from Steve Haagen, it's been lovingly cared for, along with the surrounding grounds. I can't say whether they still are held there, but it's rumored there have been quite a number of wedding receptions and dances celebrated in this romantic setting. My question today is, where did the name Maple Grove come from?

Very nice!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 07:54 am:

I'm not sure where the name came from (perhaps from a grove of maples??? ;-), but I do know there is also a Maple Grove School and a Maple Grove Cemetary in the same general area.

Oh my goodness, I love that building!!! I would like to own a house like that some day! : )

Very pretty. Can you imagine all upkeep, all the windows & curtains to clean? Would buy mini blinds for those windows if I owned that place

By Stephanie (Stefani13) on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 11:36 am:

My husband and I drive by there every year on our way "home". A few years ago, there was a HUGE family reunion being held there, so the building is probably still in use.

My wife and I live in a house with thirtythree windows and I am still washing the curtens and the drapes that I started to wash in April. People don't know how much work there is in a large home.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 12:59 pm:

Michael, By the time you finish washing the windows, curtains, and drapes it will be time to start all over again ;)
I think I counted 21 windows in my big old house. Keeps us out of mischief!

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 01:12 pm:

When I was a visiting professor down in Wisconsin and Capt. Paul was finishing his degree at Michigan Tech, I would drive past there every weekend on my way home to the Keweenaw. It reminds me of a very happy time in my life.

Mikie- I used to live in a house built in 1860 that was something like five or six thousand square feet. I can't remember how many windows there were but they went all the way up the 14 foot ceilings. The curtains were so big we had to wash them by hand in the huge claw-foot bathtub instead of the washer. The house also had several large crystal chandeliers that were beautiful, but notorious dust magnets. Big houses are great, but you're right about the work involved!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 01:34 pm:

Paul, have you ever taken the crystals off and then spend hours cleaning each one, only to find you started putting them back in the wrong order? Makes for an interesting day, since then I only vacuum them from the floor.

I remember reading a poem once..something about finding true happiness in a "cosy home and in simple pleasures"...at this point in my life I think it is so true....who needs all those windows.....too complicated and too much precious time needeed to keep it up....

Mikie:
If you can find a big garbage bag that fits around your chandelier (and a helping pair of hands) you spray down those crystals and wipe, never having to take down the crystals!
Our house only has about 20 windows, but we are so far out in the woods we need no curtains!

This structure was featured previously on the Pasty Cam on April 22, 2003. Nice to revisit in the Summer.

Capt. Paul: I see the cemetary and school on my Ontonagon county map(s) but no sign of a "Maple Grove" Township which one would think it would be!

By Daniel Bierman (Daniel) on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 12:12 am:

I can remember being at my cousins wedding reception in this building way back in 1965. It was quite a party. I can still remember that the band played more than a few Beatles songs that night!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 06:49 am:

llamamama, You're lucky. NOBODY likes curtains.

Heading out for the UP. See ya all when we get back.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 03:23 pm:

It is Maple Grove Township.

Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo):
"It is Maple Grove Township."

'Fraid not — it's Haight Township.

There is a Maple Grove Township in Barry, Manistee and Saginaw counties, but not in Ontonagon County!

(How'd I miss this 'til now?)

Caution: Some folks claim that my knowledge is only "half vast". (At least that's what I thought I heard 'em say!)
