According to Jennifer Wilke, that bright red orb in today's top photo is the first of the thimbleberries here in the Keweenaw. She also confessed to having eaten that lone ripe berry, as soon as the shot was snapped! With the second photo from David Woon, we get a closer look at the hairy, scarlet drupelets that form the "thimblelike" delicacy.

By JohnS (Jksturos) on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 08:11 am:

They were plentiful on the trail to Mt. Baldy yesterday - we left with a bellyfull. It seemed the higher we climbed the more ripe the berries became.

Ah, my favorite berry! To me there is nothing better than a Chocolate Thimbleberry Torte at the Hut Inn for the perfect celebration of this noble berry. Next to that, comes Thimbleberry Jam from the Monks over on the west side of the Island. When I got married, my buddy Brad sent me Thimbleberry Jam and Trenary Toast. You can take the Yooper out of the U.P. . . .

Thanks for bringing back the memories with this picture.

Me too! I wish I was there to pick thimbleberries and make my own jam. Maybe next summer...

By Cotton (Cotton) on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 10:49 am:

Make some jam from these berries Ron. Yummy!!!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 11:05 am:

The reason berries ripen quicker the further up in elevation you go is because the weather is harsher, even in the Keweenaw. Think about how much snow the coast gets compared to Calumet or Painesdale. The same holds true for other berries as well as the fall colours; there is usually about a week or so difference between the 41 scenic drive and eagle harbour for the leaves......

By J.T. Toivola (Joyce) on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 01:40 pm:

'Tis the season! Last week there were a scant few ripe berries. Now they are everywhere. I wound up with 12 pints of jam from Saturday's haul. I may do an all-nighter taking care of today's berries, due to the fact that I haven't done any serious picking yet today. These pictures remind me of what is out there, beckoning. It's time to change my socks, grab my bucket, whistle for Paco, and hit the trail!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 02:35 pm:

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 09:53 pm:

ah, the cool lakeshore and cooling effect of superior allow you lucky full time yoopers the thimbleberry. I have seen it in a few select locations (Beaver Island !) in the lower peninsula, but not much. try it on your oatmeal in the "potato patch" campsite in pictured rocks lakeshore. yummy

By Bill Denning (Parpagayo) on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 10:55 pm:

Thimbleberries are very nice mixed with plain yogurt, with just a touch of honey thrown in.

By Ali Christopherson (Ali) on Monday, July 24, 2006 - 11:27 pm:

Wish I could be in the UP to pick berries. The picture makes my mouth water.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 - 01:32 am:

Some years ago when up there my Uncle gave us a few Thimbleberry bushes from his yard in Woodside. We brought them down here to troll-land (St. Clair county), planted them, they came back next spring, lived for 1 year and even though we happen to be on sandy soil much like the Copper Country, they perished! :( I hear that there are a few exceptions that Thimbleberrys will thrive in more southerly areas.

By Al Verlinde (Armadaal) on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 - 05:55 am:

We were recently in Oregon on vacation, and there are many berry plants growing along the roads and in the woods that they call "Salmon Berries". They look EXACTLY like thimbleberries. Could it be that there are the same berries in different places with different names picked up in only that region ?

By David E. Woon (Dewoon) on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 09:58 am:

Salmonberries are not thimbleberries, but they're in the same family (Rubus). There's a photo here. Thimbleberries do grow on the West Coast, however, at least as far south as the Bay Area. One of my pictures is here.

By Kimberly Kronschnabel (Kimberlykronsch) on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 10:00 pm:

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, April 6, 2009 - 09:06 pm:

I had some thimbleberry jam from Pa Pa's Family Kitchen in Hubbell a few years back, and it's delicious.
