White City, near Jacobsville, is a popular summer destination, with the sandy beach and clear waters of Lake Superior. It's the perfect place to relax and recharge after a long week at work. It's no wonder this scene (captured by Frank Anderson) caught my eye when I was touring the Guest Galleries. That classic bike reminds me of the set of wheels I had as a younger Toivo, minus the basket and adding the bar to turn it into a boy's bike.

My mother said her family waited all summer for their special days to picnic at White City. Tour boats would tie up in Lake Linden and pick up the families. My mother and her brothers......and her sisters (7 French girls would dress in their pretty white dresses and big bows) and go to White City to dance in the Pavillion and picnic. circa. early 1900s....St John the Baptist Day (June 24th) was a big day for the French families to go to White City....

What a great beach, wish I would have spent more time there.

Mary Lou, did your Mom ever explain to you where White City actually was located??

https://www.pasty.com/pcam/albup12 Barb Nelson has some great pictures of White City and the boats.

RCW...I am guessing that it was just as you go into the area by the lighthouse in Jacobsville. You know where you turn to the right at the Y and then there is a bay before the lighthouse. I vaguely remember ruins of the pavillion when I was a kid at Bootjack....(although it could have been the pavillion at Dreamland).....I have a plate with the White City logo......guess it was quite the place with live bands to dance to...I have a picture of the Josepg Bosch family on their yacht, the "Antonette" tied up at the White City dock...

Mary Lou. Yes you got it right. I think that there is still a stone building there that probably was a power house. Ive got a few photos too somewhere. Course my dad rode the boats there from Ripley to there and could relate lots of stories. There was a pavillion there to so maybe that's what you have. Too bad all those places are no longer, just like Electric park to mention another.

I'll be there in two weeks. Can't wait! So many fantastic memories of White City. In fact, White City is my "Happy Place".

By Suzy Lofquist (Suzymn41) on Saturday, July 22, 2006 - 06:19 pm:

That could be my bicycle! Except mine is red and it tools around Eagle Harbor and it will be there soon. I'd like more information about how to get to White City please.

By RCW (Rcw) on Saturday, July 22, 2006 - 08:17 pm:

Suzy do you know how to get to the Dreamland Hotel in Bootjack, from there is quite easy?
