What neat photos by Bryan Howard (Charlie and Edie Hopper's son-in-law!). That first one is something else, with the ruffled feathers around the head of the eagle. Even with the wind blowing and feathers billowing out around his white head, this eagle isn't in the least disturbed, perturbed or even concerned with the snapping of his picture. In the second shot though, you can see the determination and seriousness of the task at hand: flying off in search of dinner or maybe just moving to get a better look at the lay of the land below. Folks don't use the expression, "eagle eye" for nothing! :->

Never fear, when the Eagle's in the air!

Ah a regal eagle. Very nice shot. I do notice these birds are not near as wary of humans as they once were. I stood under one in a tree a few years ago and he was only about 20 feet above me eating something. He just gave me the once over and went back to lunch.

Such wonderful creatures, those eagles are! The way they seem
to be coming back kind of reminds me of deer a century ago.
Back in 1915 people here in Adrian were so excited about
someone maybe seeing a deer. The local paper sent out a
reporter to check the woodsy area where this deer had been
maybe seen. When he spotted it, it made for quite an article.
People speculated on when deer had been seen here last. The
feeling was that they had been hunted out around the time of
the Civil War. Now, of course, we have way more than the U.P.,
and they are bigger and tastier since they tend to eat plenty of
local corn and apples. Now even we are seeing eagles down
here. It's quite a success story -- thanks to Rachel Carson and
birders everywhere, I guess.

I was fortunate enough to get a quick look at one while on vacation last week up at Cheboygan. Mom & I were on a beach walk and saw one soar briefly out over the water then slip back inland over the pine woods. There used to be one nesting down at the Nature Conservancy land down at Grass Bay, which is near the Cheboygan State Park. However, somebody felt they needed a big house right at the edge of the preserve. The eagle was not tolerant of the human activity durng construction, so it's no longer there.

Speaking of Grass Bay & large birds, there is a small flock of swans there. They frequently fly past our beach house at wave-top level, getting what airplane pilots call "ground effect", i.e. increased lift.

We have a resident Eagle here in Bootjack. He usuallyl does a "fly by" in the morning and again in the evening. We were sitting on the deck and he was only a few yards away from us----so awesome!!!!!

We used to have a pair of eagles that had a nest on a small lake we lived on when I was little. They came back year after year until I think the lake got too populated around the edges and they needed more solitude. We also lost our bitterns too; silly birds those were........

The eagles are making a comeback because DDT is removed from the envionment. Renowned eagle researcher,and good friend, Sergej Postupalsky,told me that the eagles egg shells were about 40% thinner in the early sixties as a result of DDT and other pesticides in the eco system. They would break before hatching.The current eagle study in the state is being done as an early enviornmental indicater of eco sytem health. i.e. If eagle nests fail to reproduce in an area, there must be a reason and they can then foucus in on cause.
