Cathy Westcott and family recently spent some time enjoying this park located on M-26, between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. She was even able to get her three youngsters to sit still long enough for a shot of them and Lake Superior from one of the covered viewing benches located there. The middle shot gives you a good look at the steps, made out of large rocks, that keep the kids busy traveling up and down them to get a better view.

So if you haven't figured out which roadside park this is from the first two shots, the third one gives it away. It's the plaque embedded into the rock wall, telling you that Esrey Park was given to the Public in honor of Anna Scott Block, by Etta M. Esrey, in 1933.

My favorite place to eat a pasty by far!

By Cathy Kitchen Dittrich (Utahyooper) on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 09:14 am:

This was one of mom's favorite parks and we hope to celebrate her life on the 4th right there. I can hardly wait to get up and over there. We leave today and should be there for Pasty Fest. UMMMMMM, a good pasty.

I love this place, too. When I took this picture (link below to guest gallery) I thought how great a view it would be to experience the changing seasons in the Keweenaw.

I wonder if anyone knows the history between Anna Scott and Etta Esrey. What a wonderful memorial.

By Bill Denning (Parpagayo) on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 10:51 am:

One of my earliest childhood memories of the Keweenaw is of family picnics at Esrey Park, even in cold weather in the fall.

It's a lovely place, and I concur with the poster who said every visitor should stop there.

And here's an old view: https://pasty.com/pcam/album/albuu76/Esrey_Park_old.sized.jpg

Now let's see if I did that right.

Eräs tölkki lähes kuulla kesä kuonapöly... sekä kärytä suurenmoinen hajuste lta Iso Järvi, keskellä höyry :)

...A really special place full of wonderful memories of special people...love it and hope to see it again next week......for a pasty break.

By Cindy, St. Clair Shores, MI (Cindy) on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 05:29 pm:

Marsha, I really liked the old picture of Esrey Park. That old wooden bench looks like a great place to rest.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 06:06 pm:

OK, sur5er, translate!

By Ryan James Byykkonen (Rbyykkonen) on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 06:53 pm:

Seen many a sunrise and many sunset from this spot!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 08:47 pm:

Yes, sur5er, translate, please - you're VERY out of my league with that one!

'Tis kinda funny, though, how machine translation fares. This is the best I get (with alternative translations shown for various words). Nearly hopeless!:

"Eräs tölkki lähes kuulla kesä kuonapöly..."
[ An | Certain | One | Some | Somebody ]
[ jar | tin | can | pot ]
[ well-nigh | almost | near ]
[ learn | hear ]
summer
kuonapöly
(kuona = slag, dross, dregs, scum; pöly = dust) (?)...

and (too many words for one pass)

"Sekä kärytä suurenmoinen hajuste lta Iso Järvi, keskellä höyry."

[ And | Some ]
smell
[ grandiose | superb | magnificent | great | splendid | imposing | grand ]
[ perfume | scent ]
from
[Tall | voluminous | gross | large | big | strapping | great ]
Lake,
[ amid | in ]
[ stream | steam | air ]
.

After that, I need a pasty! ... and for lack of any other means of near-instant gratification, I'm off to Cornish Pasty Co., Tempe, AZ, where I can at least get an authentic Cornish Oggie.

This translation was emailed to me:
"you can almost feel the breeze and smell the big lake from the picture
This is paraphrased since my Finn is not that good."

This is where I proposed to my wife, down from the park a little, on the beach, towards Eagle Harbor....

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, June 29, 2006 - 11:01 pm:

Many memories at Esrey Park. Way back in '58 I was up on top, looking out over the Lake. As I was coming down, an elderly couple had stopped and had the fixin's for a picnic. They invited me to join them for a meal. That was SO nice! Total strangers even. That is the place where my cousin Shirley taught me how to skip rocks on the water, many years before. Mimi and I have some pix from a coupla years ago, with the geese on the east end of the park.

Aren't those some CUTE kids?! Kiitos, Cathy.
