One of the treasures in the Archives here at Pasty Central is a feature known as "Copper Country Reflections". Chuck Voelker has assembled a visual history of the boom years in the copper mining era, with hundreds of photos which transport us to those glory days of the Keweenaw Peninsula. (Actually, we've been told, the real glory days are still in the future.)

Lake Linden was home to the largest stamp mill in Calumet & Hecla's operation, of which you can see a good overview dating back to 1881. The tour in today's picture was probably closer to 1910, as the attraction was to see the wooden structures which had been updated to steel. There are only ruins left standing today, a reminder of the former time when business was at its peak.

Hope to see you at Pasty Fest this Saturday in Calumet (July 1). Just look for the long line at the Pasty Central booth, as we'll be giving away free pasties to the first 500 attendees. Stick around for the results of the pasty poetry contest, and to hear about this year's winners in the baking competition. Come early for the parade, and join us later in the afternoon for an open-house tour of Pasty Central Express, our new drive-thru pasty kitchen in Kearsarge next to the Hut. We hope to have both operations in service sometime next month.

Hats!?!

The Hut sounds like it is going retro. I was there for curb service in 1955. And now a drive thru. What next? Nice addition to US-41.

My Grandfather, Anselm Studer, was in charge of security for the Lake Linden complex. He came to Copper Harbor about 1882-3.worked at Copper Falls building foundations, went to Quincy in about 1884, (during the big building program there) as a stomemason and ended up in Lake Linden at C & H....retired after 50 yrs..died in 1937...a very good man.

Grandpa Slattery, "Red", retired after 50 years at C & H smelter in Hubbell. Every grandchild commented in our family history, how grandma was typical French Canadian, harsh displinarian. But grandpa was so calm and loving. Loved by the folks in town too.

My grandpa Normand worked here until he retired but I don't know what year that was. He got a nice watch, I remember that. My mom used to take him his lunch and he always saved something out of it for her. Probably our grandpas knew each other Ms. Katie!
