At this moment I am looking out our dining room window at the same scene which appeared 8 years ago on these pages. It may even be the same ship passing by. The trees are a little taller, but the Lake is absolutely identical, relatively calm beneath bright blue skies. Looks like the leaves may have been a little farther along back in May of 1998.

I notice on the "Countdown to PastyFest" it is exactly 40 days until July 1 when Main Street Calumet will come alive with the parade, competition and free pasties to the first 500 attendees. If you have a tradition of visiting the Keweenaw for the 4th of July, be sure to came a few days early and join in the fun.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 06:55 am:

Mornin', I will make the assumption that the lake boats are out every day now.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 07:04 am:

Good morning everyone :) Clear blue skies this morning..with temps heading up to the 70's today. I have my first load of bed linens on the line already, this morning :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 07:16 am:

Morning everybody. It's going to be nice here today. The sun is shining on our way to 70. We planted flowers yesterday (still not done and hope we can get done before our trip to the UP on Friday), and we have no frost. But our neighbor down the street has frost this morning. Sure glad I live UP the hill rather than down. You guys have a good day now.

Hey Sur5er, Everytime I watch "Close to Home" I think of you. Do you watch that show? The star of the show is a woman prosecutor in Indiana. Don't ask me why, but I think of you. The finale was so sad. I TiVo'd it and watched last night. It was good. Have a good day (or is it night?).

By lz (Llamamama) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 07:24 am:

Great start to the week following a beautiful weekend here in SW Michigan. A little chilly yesterday and chance of frost last night. Husband will be checking the berry blossoms for damage!
Great pics as always! Good day all!

By Ozzie W. (10330) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 07:26 am:

24 and frost in Copper City this morning.Blue skies and sunny and a nice day coming up today.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 08:02 am:

Usedtobeayooper, I haven't watched the show, 'Close To Home'...what channel is it on? Funny that the female prosecutor reminds you of me...because I was told by a prosecutor and Michigan State Trooper that I would make a great prosecuting attorney...and I have always loved criminal law :)
Yaaaaaaaaawn, I should be headed to bed right now...but I am expecting a call from the senator's office today, and I have to reply to an email from the Indiana State Police. Yaaaaaaaaawn!

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 08:03 am:

Yes! Lakers and Lake Superior! Life is good!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 08:16 am:

Sur5er, Close to Home comes on on CBS at 9:00 my time (probably 10:00 your time) on Fridays. It is a great show. I like shows about tough broads and she is one. The finale was Friday night and it was a shocker. Anyway, just by listening to you I think you'd probably make a good prosecutor. That's why I think of you when watching that show (that and it takes place in Indiana).

Happy Day! I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 08:17 am:

Ozzie, Are you by any chance the Ozzie that hung around with my dad, Ben, from Lake Linden? I think it was baseball games but I could be wrong.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 08:43 am:

Usedtobeayooper, In all honesty, if they were to base a show on the prosecutor's office in these parts of Indiana, it would be a comedy. That's how much of a grasp they don't have on the laws...sigh.
Have a great day at work.

Llamamama, So what's the news on the cherry blossoms? Keeping my fingers crossed that Jack Frost didn't do a number on them.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 09:23 am:

Good morning. Hard to believe we are well into May and June is just around the corner. Have the pesky
black flies arrived yet? Hope they have come and gone by the time we get back UP

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 09:29 am:

Good morning, It looks sunny and cold here in Berkley from my office window. Jimmie the overweight cat, not allowed to call him fat anymore, directive from my grandson Tim Ozanich, he is afraid I might hurt Jimmies feelings. Anyway he is waiting impationatly [sp] for me to open the window where I have made his seat.Twenty two pounds roaming around my feet and meowing loudly. Can't even change his mind by putting food in his bowl. Emptied the freezer out last night cooked hamburgers [4] hot dogs [5] two pieces of white fish, and two steaks all from Omaha Steaks but the fish from UP. Kids and family were here. Made macaroni and cheese using blue cheese and it is excellent.

By Peg Hardt (Almostup) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 09:40 am:

Charlie, What a great view from your dining room window. Ever thought about a special album in the guest photo gallery called "A View From My Window"? :o)

By lz (Llamamama) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 10:15 am:

Mikie; I like the blue cheese idea, will have to try that!

Sur5er; hard to keep up with us fruit farmers here. Ours is blueberries. Damage is limited not as bad as the cherry and grape farmers got hit a couple of weeks ago.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 10:25 am:

lz, My grandson Tim Ozanich was visiting one day and spotted blueberries in the ice box he asked for some and even used the magic word, so I gave him some and then gave him some more and then some more, my daughter Dani the school teacher, called me and scolded me because of his diaper being rather ripe. Little did I know there would be a problem, but now when there are blueberries Tim says only a little because I get a stomach ache from them. Got to love grandkids.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 10:55 am:

Nice sunny morning today . Looks like a it's going to be a nice day.
Like the picture of the day. Wish I had that view from my front window. Our son Darren lives on the shore of Lake Superior outside of Marquette & just loves it. He gets to see those beautiful boats, hear the waves & smell the fresh air.
Kathy helped two people already. One received her liver & the other received her kidneys. Isn't that great?!!!!!!!! She will live on, not only in my memory. She'd be happy by that.
Everyone have a great day!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 12:22 pm:

Cotton, I'm glad that it is a comfort to you... and Kathy's family and friends, that in even death, Kathy has given the gift of life to others. I remember years ago, on our police department one officer received a heart transplant...and another officer received a kidney transplant.

Michigan residents, wishing to be added to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry can do so online at:
http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-34786---,00.html

I signed up today...and it took only a few seconds. Wonder how many Michiganders from Pasty Cam we can get signed up today at the Michigan Organ Donor Registry in honor of Kathy, today.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 12:55 pm:

Was just watching channel seven in Detroit and they had a story on about how seniors are being cheated, it will be on again later, well worth watching if you can recieve it.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 05:42 pm:

Wow Mikie, that Mac & Cheese sure sounds good. I am in Ferndale, not to far from ya. I think that I might have to drop in for dinner. Make sure that you drop it on the floor first for all the extra flavor. ROFL :)

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 06:58 pm:

just warming up a pasty-like casserole leftover for dinner. Don't want to rile any pasty purest by calling it a true pasty. But it works when I don't have time or inclination to make individual pastys.Hard to believe it's only 40 days til I get to eat an authentic local pasty in the Copper Country!Yaaaaaaaa!

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 10:20 pm:

Cotton,I am sorry to learn of the death of your friend.I am sure it is comforting to you to know that a part of her is living on in others.

Mikie, I would love to see a picture of your cat!! Our girl Sami, is 12lbs and the Vet says to try and cut back on her food. I get some pitiful looks:(

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 10:33 pm:

Fran, I will try to get my son to take a picture of Jimmie,I don't know how to use the new cameras so I don't have one. My camera is a twin reflex that I bought in 1968,Yahshika.
Pennie, There isn't any left over but I got the idea from O'mara's restaurant in Berkley on the corner of Coolidge and Twelve mile road. It really was rich, and Kelly my daughter in law loved it so much she took the leftovers home, I thought that is what I was going to have for lunch today, big disapointment. Had fried bologna and cheese instead.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Monday, May 22, 2006 - 11:43 pm:

Mikie, I really don't know what day is considered the day she passed away. Her brain lost all function. She had only the ability to breathe with the help of the respirator (her brain could only help her breathe, nothing else). Friday the respirator was her only means of breathing. She went totally brain dead (hate that word!). Saturday afternoon they took her to the OR & removed her organs then turned off the respirator. Her heart stopped after that. So Idon't know if it would be Friday or Saturday. Her daughter didn't know what day would be official on her death certificate. Her ashes are being sent to me to sprinkle on Lake Superior. I feel it's an honor to do that for my friend. Though it will be hard to do I will do it.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 - 12:13 am:

Cotton, You are a good friend.

By Ozzie W. (10330) on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 - 06:57 am:

Hi Deb,Haven't seen you in quite a while.Your dad and I were invovled in CLK- Tl youth baseball for many years and played softball together.Your Grandma D. and my Grandpa P.were sister and brother.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 - 07:04 am:

Ozzie, Why is it I never even knew we were related? I always just thought you were a friend of my dad's. What a small world and what a wonderful website this is. I had no idea you were related to my grandma. So if you're related to my grandma then you're related to Davesou just like I am too. What a great site! Nice to hear from you. I will have to tell my dad. I asked him if it could be you but he didn't know. He's totally computer illiterate and hasn't a clue how this stuff works. Anyway, he'll think it's cool. Have a great day!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 - 07:10 am:

Cotton, That's so wonderful of you to do that for your friend. It will probably be the hardest thing you've ever had to do but to respect her wishes is a great thing. My friend's ashes were spread in Eagle River. It's hard. I don't envy you. But your friend is living on and that's terrific. I, too, am an organ donor. Giving the gift of life is the best thing anybody can do. It's hard on the family at first, but then I think it's a relief knowing they're living on and helping somebody even in death. My heart goes out to you.
