Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 08:12 am:

John Smallwood graced the pages of the Pasty Cam on this day in 1998. In December of 2002 we honored John among those remembered at the end of the month memorial. Where did the years go?

Appropriate to revisit this scene inside the lobby at Still Waters, as we are preparing for the Benefit Concert for Still Waters tomorrow night at the Calumet Theatre. This Home for the Aged - where John and so many others have received extra care in their later years - has been in need of support and assistance from the community throughout its 24 year history. The Copper Country United Way and this web project have provided some of that support, but it's friends like you who have really made the difference, and allowed Still Waters to keep on keeping on.

Jeff Valley is keeping on course as he circles the Keweenaw this week on his bike, spreading the word and hoping to arrive at the Calumet Theatre in time for the concert Saturday at 7pm. I ran into Jeff yesterday afternoon up in the woods, on his way to High Rock Bay beyond Copper Harbor. I understand he took a wrong turn at Breakfast Lake, and almost peddled all the way back to Bete Gris. Fortunately he turned around and made it to Mariner North, where he spent the night. Looks like a great day again for a long ride :o)

Morning everybody! Hooray! It's Friday and I get off early to go to see the Tim McGraw/Faith Hill concert. Ought to be good. Only trouble is I won't have time to be on here talking to you guys. You have a wonderful weekend and we'll see you tomorrow. (Who knows, Mr. Deb just may get on at some point if you're lucky.)

Good Morning Everybody. Hope you all have a great day today. After all, it's Friday :)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 08:46 am:

Liz, Sorry to hear about the rain. The sun has finally broken through here. I was telling hubby today, as I drove him to his semi, "Isn't it nice to be greeted by the sunshine in the morning, instead of those dark gloomy clouds and rain..."

Usedtobeayooper, You enjoy that concert now, you hear :)

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 09:17 am:

Morning All.
--Pinckneyliz-- Looks like a glorious day in the CC. Did you also notice that the bridge is in the lowered position?
Enjoy the day everyone!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 09:35 am:

Oh to be young and foolish again. Me on a bicycle. Like a tomato on a razor.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 10:20 am:

Oh to be young and foolish is right Margaret. I finally got to see Nate's adventure slide show. And wondered how some of us pasty cammer gals would like to do a trek like those young puppies did. Actually I have 6 grandsons their age who would love to do the same. I can image us "mature" trekers in that cabin, drinking cocoa (or those other spirits) and all having a royal gab-fest. Not sure about the bare feet in the icy waters! Let see...Beverly, sur5er, Kosk, Lorelei, Deb, Mary, stix,Margaret,Sunrise, me, Indiana gals, Fran. oh I can't think this early of all the names. But wouldn't it be a hoot! Of course we'd all have 20 year's old staminas. Hey girls? We can dream.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 12:03 pm:

Ms Katie, wouldn't that be fun for all of us "gals" to gather in that cabin. The bonfire would be fun too. Boy, don't I wish I had the stamina I had at 20!!!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 12:48 pm:

Hi, Rowdy, see you and Ann the week of July 4.

going to the UP today for a long weekend--yoohoo!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 12:56 pm:

If you invited me to the cabin I would do the cooking and maybe some of the dishwashing. At the bonfire I make great smores. I am taking therapy to be able to walk again, can walk around the block now, but am looking forward to walking miles again. Last year I had a hard time walking from the road into the bluff and couldn't go down to the water, hope to be able to this July. I would love to be able to take a trek like these young men did, makes me envy them.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 01:05 pm:

Are you recovering from knee surgery?

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 01:21 pm:

Can the hola. It's huuvasti(sp someone should help out here) in the UP!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 01:22 pm:

Maija.... Yup see you then.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 01:23 pm:

I have artheritis and during the winter I quit walking gained a lot of weight and just left myself go.Normally in the winter I work at my lathe, but this year I didn't, my meds were all messed up I am diabetec [sp] also and with the kids here all I would do was go to the Legion for lunch. I was off my schedule, my own fault, kept blaming everyone else for the way I felt. The doc has me feeling better and in water therapy, but my mussles have shrunk and so I have to stretch them. Joints are all perfect, when my dad was my age he was so crippled up he would sit on the porch and watch the traffic go by, or work in his garden. I don't want to be like that.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 03:50 pm:

Ms Katie, Count me in...what I would give for a girlie girl gab fest, in da UP. Pass the s'mores and strawberry daiquris, please :)

Maija, Have a wonderful time in the UP...take some pictures for us...and don't forget to give us a full report, when you get back home ;) Drive carefully, in your trucklet :)

Mikie, Time to break out the bicycle, eh. Until the weather warms up a bit, I have been using leg weights, to build up my muscles. I've had arthritis for years, and have found that if I am sorta kinda faithful with my exercises, that something with the muscle tone helps the arthritis.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 03:53 pm:

Hey gals, invite me. Sitting around gabbin would be great. Eatin too!!

Deb. my daughter just went to see them in Detroit, said they were great. So know you'll enjoy them. Does Mr.Deb have the sense of humor as the Mrs? Would be interesting to see his posts!
Sun's out, nice to se it.
Kathy is still with us tho she's weaker. It won't be long & she'll be forever at peace.
Thanks for all the thoughts & prayers.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 04:15 pm:

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 04:52 pm:

Ms. Katie,
Hey thanks for the invite! Boy, we should someday think about meeting and doing just that. A little walk and a lot of talk. Sounds like a lot of fun. I will bring the chips and homemade salsa. That should go good with the daiquris:) Yum, Yum, Yum.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 06:00 pm:

We are a dreaming bunch!!and I guy waiting on us. whoo hooo

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 07:29 pm:

Lorelei, You make salsa too :) That is how I spend a good majority of my Friday afternoons, in the summer...chopping up garden fresh tomatoes and ingredients for salsa :)
Hubby treated me to dinner at a local Mexican resturant this evening...and we were commenting on how they have some of the best salsa. Although the resturant doesn't sell the salsa, they were kind enough to give me a large container of salsa...at no charge, to bring home.
Which reminds me, I have to order a Ulu for salsa making this summer...I have been after hubby to get me one.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 08:31 pm:

Mikie, I work for a hospital and the area I am centered in is near the Physical Therapy and Dialysis. If you could some how get into physical therapy I think it would be of help for you. I see a lot of wonderful things come out of that dept. not to mention it worked wonders for me when I had my double discectomy!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 10:24 pm:

Hei Rowdy, "hyvästi" means goodbye. What you'd say to a person in a casket. The last goodbye. "Hyvää päivää" is Good day. "Hyvää huomenta" means Good morning. The ä has the sound of the 'a' in cat, hat. "Hyvää ilta" is good evening. "Hei hei" is sorta, See you later.
A "Hei" is the same as Hi. Well, anyway that's some of them. "Hyvää yöta" is Good night. Hei hei.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 10:38 pm:

Sounds like a someday happening ahead. Needs some planning but would be fun! I'm actually getting things lined up go to the UP. My sister agreed to come to the Pasty Fest with me so I'm on my way. Does anyone know if lodging would be a problem if we don't make reservations ahead, not sure when we'll get there. I'm all excited about this trip.... I'm hoping Sharon has/had a safe trip home today. The weather should have been good from the sounds of it. Welcome home Sharon :)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 11:35 pm:

Tomorrow she has a recital so we will go to see her at the first show and then her brothers, Tim and Joe will be coming over for lunch,Tim wants hotdogs and grilled cheese, also an apple. I really love having grandkids.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 11:36 pm:

Sharon is home. I've been enjoying those 10:00 sunsets on her webcam.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, May 20, 2006 - 10:53 am:

Ms Katie, That would be wonderful. Somebody should plan something (but maybe we should invite Mikie to make us the daiguiris). What do ya think Mikie? Could you stand to be around all of us females? We'd have a blast, I know we would. And wouldn't it be wonderful to finally get to meet and enjoy each other's company other than on the site? OOOOHHHH, the thought makes me all goosebumply! (And don't forget the pink flamingos and Mikie can bring his pelican is it?) I think it was Mikie anyway.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, May 20, 2006 - 11:05 am:

Deb, I haven't got the pelican yet, but do have the one legged flamigo. My daquire shaker is ready to go. When I worked, I worked with a lot of women and never had as much fun since I was the only guy there. They taught me a lot about cooking, a lot of ethnic dishes. My salsa is to die for.
