Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 08:39 am:

It's not as clear and sunny today in the Copper Country as it was 8 years ago. In fact, it's cloudy and raining. But give it a few hours, and we may have blue skies again.

Jonathan was still experimenting with the Sony Mavica back in 1998. In those days he was working part time while he went to Tech, doing the overnight shift in the kitchen at Still Waters. On his way home that morning he spotted the lone yellow flower along Cliff Drive, glowing in the sunrise.

I certainly hope the weather clears a little for Jeff Valley's bike ride around the Keweenaw Peninsula that starts this morning. He's carrying posters and invitations for the Benefit Concert this Saturday. Leaving from Still Waters this morning, he is headed for the Calumet Theatre - the LONG way around, going east instead of west. No, not around the world, but around the whole Keweenaw Peninsula. We'll have more reports later, so stay tuned.

Good morning everybody! I hope everybody has a happy "hump" day. The weeks do go by faster the older we get, don't they?

Morning Deb!

Happy Wednesday to Everyone!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 07:54 am:

To all of the French Canadians with Mohawk
connections--

Last weekend at the conference I attended
about the Ojibway, Cree and Iroquois. I spoke
with the few Mohawks who were there and
found out that none of the them had heard of
the Crabtree Reservation near Montreal. I
also asked my pastor's mom who is of
Mohawk origin. No luck.

I will continue to hunt. In July I am going to
another conference up in Thunder Bay.

By the way, while at the conference with my
Pasty Cam questions in hand, a man looked
at me and asked--"Are you a Yooper?" My
heart did a little pitty pat of pride as I
responded a resounding " yes!" Turns out he
corresponds with a Yooper who now lives in
Chicago. From Ironwood. Naturally he asked
me if I knew the person. A fair question in the
UP. I didn't, but maybe my dad does...

Morning!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 08:19 am:

Morning Tim, Kosk, and Smfwixom. Hope you all have a great day! Doesn't anybody else get up early around here? And it's an hour earlier here than where you guys are.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 09:00 am:

Good morning all, This is early for me to rise. I have to have my chimmney redone and the contractor who wants to do it called at eight thrirty an ungodly time to wake anyone up. I get up every morning at 6:30 am to wake Precious up, so she can go to work. Then I return to bed until at least ten. Sky is beautiful with white fluffy clouds and lots of blue. Maybe I should get up earlier and enjoy the daylight more. Naw, I will just shut off the phones. I made meat loaf last night and you know did not like it complained about everything. Guess what she gets for dinner tonight, and don't think steak. She will either have meatloaf, or fried bologna and cheese.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 09:36 am:

Hey, it's raining on Sharon's porch.

KOSK, I am interested in the Ogibway as my daddy was one. Will go to the reservation this summer in Wisconsin. My uncle is from the reservation in Baraga.

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 09:39 am:

Deb S. - I'm at work at 5:30, but wasn't near my computer this morning. You have a great day, too!

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 09:52 am:

Looks as though it may be clearing up some here in the Copper Country. Sure hope everyone has a great day today.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 10:25 am:

Yaaaa the sun is shining here in the hills of NW Il. Hope it stays rainless long enough to dry the sheets I'm washing. Happy Wednesday everyone.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 10:42 am:

ooh ooh, I forgot that Precious told me to wash the sheets, thanks for the reminder Ms Katie

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 10:54 am:

Marsha, So sorry to hear that you dad has cancer :( Hang in there...and don't forget to savor every moment you still have with your dad.
(((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))))))

Ms. Katie, hope the sun stays out long enough to dry those sheets. Here in Indiana, the sun is also shining...but after more than a week of constant cloud cover and rain, I'm not too trusting of the rain. Maybe tomorrow I'll do the linen on the line, if the sun is out ;)

Mikie, You made meatloaf...and didn't invite me?

Usedtobeayooper, Why happy hump day to you too :) New song: Wednesday's hump day, middle of the week day...Usedtobeayooper's favorite middle of the week day...Wednesday's hump day!

Kosk, WOW! See how small the world really is ;)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 11:05 am:

sur5er, Just fried some of it in bar b que and made a sandwich, still some left if you can make it before dinner. I think that Precious is going to have a salad and a fried bologna sandwich.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 03:53 pm:

Mikie, so sad. onbody appreciates your meatloaf? I'd come over but I'm making stuffed green peppers. People just don't appreciate how hard we homemakers do work, huh? I just took down all the wonderful smelling sheets outside. There's static on the radio so it's comin' Have had some rain every day since LAST Wed. Better get off the line with a storm comin'. Back before bedtime. Later...

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 04:07 pm:

Mikie , you and Precious sound like my ol' man and I ! I leave
for work at 5 A.M. , give him a kiss goodbye and recieve
grumbles only ! He rolls over and goes back to sleep until 10
A.M. ! He believes that the chickens are not even awake at that
hour ! And he won't even touch meatloaf !!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 04:21 pm:

Lou lou, I started cooking after I retired, and Precious stopped. I had just spent $60,000 on the kitchen and someone was going to use it. Maybe you should try doing the same.

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 05:11 pm:

Mikie , now I know you sound just like him ! Do you mean
trying the same as in $60,000 for a new kitchen or using it ?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 05:18 pm:

$60,000 If he is like me he wont let it go to waste.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 05:54 pm:

Don't mean to be picky, but I believe it's Ojibwa; not Ojibway.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 06:31 pm:

Well people, the bearer of sad news is here AGAIN!! Another one of my friends ( the best), Kathy Slayman (Ferkovich from Copper City) suffered a brain aneurysm yesterday while she was at work. She is now on life support. Her brain is not functioning & she's gone into cardiac arrest 3 times. They are trying to keep her alive until her brothers & sister can get to Georgia on Friday. Then they will do as she had wished. She wanted to be an organ donor. She was in good health, I just spoke to her a couple of weeks ago. She was her "happy go lucky" self. She'd be 60 in July. Some of you may have known her. She was a really good hearted happy gal.
So my mood is as gloomy as this weather. Sorry I can't post anything humorous lately. It's almos tlike "don't get close to me" or . Guess I'm just starting to feel sorry for myself hey?! I will try to keep my chin up.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 08:19 pm:

Cotton, Sorry to hear about your friend. Will keep both of you in my prayers. If you can't tell friends your troubles who can you? And we are your friends.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 08:48 pm:

We will pray for you and your friend.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 09:38 pm:

So sorry, cotton, about losing your dear friend. But how wonderful that she had the joy of giving of herself to who knows how many desperate patients she is helping! She's living on in others. I look forward to the day I may help someone who needs me. The Lord be with you all!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 09:56 pm:

Cotton--So sorry to hear about your friend.

Margaret--Maybe our fathers knew each other
way back when. Where are you planning to go
in Wisconsin?

Daveofmohawk--Terminology sure is
confusing. You find, in very reputable sources,
Ojibway, Ojibwa, Ojibwe, Chippewa,
Anishinabeg. And that's just one group. The
Iroquois or Haudeneshone also have a raft of
terms.

Marsha--So sorry to hear about your dad.
I'll say a prayer for him. Where does he live?

By Cotton (Cotton) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 10:44 pm:

My husband just told me that our niece in Green Bay had a healthy 7 lb baby girl this afternoon. I had such a feeling since hearing about Kathy that Kim would have a girl. I was right.I told him "God giveth & God taketh away". We are blessed with a little grand-niece. For that I am happy.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 10:53 pm:

kosk: Thank you for your prayers. My mom and dad live 5 minutes away from me, in Flint. My mom is 90 and scurries around all day (and in the night, too) helping to take care of him: bringing him beverages, tucking the blankets up around him, etc. My brother and his wife are staying in their pickup camper in the backyard, and my sister is also nearby.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 11:06 pm:

Marsha, My wife and I will pray for you and your family. Cotton Congrats on the new grand niece. I have one in Bootjack who thinks that I am the greatest grand uncle. Her name is Kyra. After I saw her in Feb. then left she looked for me afterwards, asking where I was. Kids can make you feel good. How much longer till you are a grandmother again? My granddaughter Andrea wants to return bottles tommorrow so she has money for Berkley days, the carnival is in town as of tonight.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - 11:51 pm:

Hei Kosk, Kilpela and Friends will be playing at a Finnfest in Thunder Bay the 3rd week of July.
(That's the same week-end as the Aura Jamboree.)
Are you still up there then?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 07:12 am:

Cotton, I am so sorry about your friend. You can add my prayers to the list of people who will be praying for her. She must have been a wonderful person. Most nurses are. They give so much of themselves, much like teachers do. But congrats on your niece. What wonderful news. Babies are such blessings and they make you feel so good when you think that nothing can.

Marsha, Sorry about your dad. It's so hard hearing bad news about parents. But you know it's inevitable. Will pray for him as well. I'm glad you're so close to them. When my parents are ill it's so hard cuz I'm in MN and they're in the UP. It's very hard.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 08:03 am:

Marsha-- I am so glad that your family has
been able to be there for your folks. Deb--I
hear you. As two only children, my husband
and I do a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between
Toronto and the LP. Our parents, the ones not
incapacitated by Alzheimer's or strokes, are so
valiant in their trials. My dad did such a good
job of looking after my mom to the end. Now
my father-in-law is trying to do the same with
my mother-in-law.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 08:05 am:

Kenjamimi-- The conference takes place from
July 24-27. Is that when you are playing?

By Mary Lou Curtin (Marylou) on Friday, May 19, 2006 - 09:23 am:

Kosk..Thank you for inquiring about "Crabtree"...I wonder if it is now called Crabtree and that it preveously was a Mohawk Reservation by another name??.....do you know of a Mohawk Reservation near Montreal during the later part of the 1800s????..appreciate your efforts.
